Most of you are in your teens, which means your parents are likely very involved in your life. You've got tests and they want you to go to college and become a doctor or proctologist or hamster wrangler...
But do they support your writing? Do they take it seriously or treat it like a phase or habit? Give us the details!

Haha... There must be an average option which says that they have neutral feelings about it. In a sense that they do not really care nor oppose against it.
As for me I will vote for "sort of" because my mom does not really care if I take writing (or whatever you call it) in college. Assuming that I have great grades everywhere. At the end of the day, even though she does not participate in my everyday life. She persuades me to contine on studying. That is obviously a good thing. |

I'm going to college next year and getting a creative writing minor, so I'd say yes, my parents support my writing and take it seriously. Even before now, my parents have always supported my writing. Being that I'm going to college for dance (my major) and writing, I think my parents would support me with pretty much anything I wanted to study.

My mum does in the sense she doesn't care overly much what I do with my life so long as I'm happy, so if I chose writing (which technically I have for uni) then she's cool with it. However, I used to give her everything I wrote to read, but nowadays she won't read anything I give her unless I bug her a lot (which I don't do often because I don't like to be annoying) so I get the drift she's not overly interested, though she's supportive. Confused, but eh.
![]() My dad told me I should be a doctor/lawyer/theusualhighpaidoccupationpeoples when I was like . . . four. And firmly stuck to his guns about 'good jobs'. I've always been of the mind that I don't really care what I do so long as I enjoy it and am happy. Money isn't overly important to me so long as I can live. Last time (and the only time) I gave him something of mine to read, he made a face and said very little about it (I was twelve) and then started talking about other 'good' (high paid) careers I could consider. I told him I was applying for Classics at uni. :3 |

My parent has this lovely habit of showing me my test scores and telling me that based on these I should go to college for math or science. She also thinks I should be a writer, just on the side while I pursue a more academic career. I'm quite fond of laughing at her in response.
On the whole she just stays out of my way and lets me manage my life.

My dad supports it wholeheartedly, which is why I've got a laptop in my room. He wants me to keep writing. He says that he would like to write for a living, so he understands. We're actually a lot alike.
My mom supports it, I suppose. She wrote a bit in college, too, not as seriously as I do. She gives advice when I ask (almost never). She was more involved when I was younger and willing to show it to her. But she still thinks of most things, like cleaning, as more important. I realize she does leave a lot of time for me to write... but. She does think of other things as more important, and for me, nothing's more important. They expect me to get good grades. They don't care too much what I major in in college; I think Mom considered an English major, so. They do support it the fact that I write. It might not be the same if they read everything I wrote....

I never really let my parents read my stuff, so it's not something we've ever spoken seriously about. My dad goes on about how they'll be able to live off me when they're old and I'm a successful author, but obviously he's taking the piss. They know I'm serious about writing in some respect though, because I've told they straight up I want to do English at a uni that also offers a sidelong course or module in creative writing or journalism. But as far as how supportive they are.... My mum is constantly pointing to my good exam grades and telling me I should aim for a "proper" career and do a degree in law, and my dad keeps talking about how there's never been a lawyer in the family. And of course they never fail to mention that a lawyer's income is considerably more than a journalist, but I'm told them time and time again I'd rather be making less and enjoying myself that hate my job and only be in it for the money. I think they realise that now, but.... Parents are parents, they won't really accept it until it happens.

My parents are my biggest advocates. Even at twelve and thirteen years old when I was just starting to write my novel they had no doubts that they'd help me get published. My mom has read my book and some of my other writings and loves to tell anyone that we meet "Oh, my daughter just finished writing a book. She's going to be a published author one day." My dad has only read one of my stories (he's not a big reader) but he has full faith and me. He's already started allocating my nonexistent book sale money. (He's just kidding, though. He's not one of those maniacal "I raised you so I get all the profits" dads.) They listen patiently to all of my nonsensical ramblings about plot and characterization and how hard it is to write without inspiration. They got me a laptop a few years ago so that I'd stop hogging the family computer for hours while writing. They're pretty awesome.

Both of my parents support and praise my writing, though writing is just a hobby for me, not something serious (I know, I know, I don't belong here!), so they don't really have opportunity to support me. When I do bring home pieces of writing from school, they ooh and aah over it!
