I've never had this problem (because I don't show my writing to my friends), but this might be helpful for those of you who do. Or the questions might work for critiques on this site.

Yeah, those are good questions to ask and you could probably easily adapt them for a short story or something as well.

I had the pleasure of attending a lecture with my friend (he's going on sixty) by a simply amazing art critic, who said if you want a compliment, show your work to your mother. If you want to get better, let the critics shred it.
