Yes, I love the title too.
Technically, this is our second collab thread. I found the first!

Ready?
_______________

-- years. And we are broken.

We've stitched ourselves back together several times, finding pieces we've strewn around the room. You push your shoulders back into their sockets, and pop back in the hip that he displaced.

Ripped hips are like prom-night thighs.

Pick me up, and let me bounce behind you.
You don't realize the number of double-takes you receive.
Oh, but I do.

But I just want to be your ragdoll.

the first creative thing I've written in a year, so. huzzah!

because I've been your rag doll--
dress me undress me,
rip my clothes and tell me this has to be

because it's just so easy to ensnare another,
blond blue eyes breasts bigger than her mind--
beauty queens are easy to find--

but we've spent too long already
playing at house and playing at love,
telling ourselves this would always be enough.

Ugh. That was nice. Something twinged inside. Either I have a worm burrowed in my chest or you just have the talent to make your readers feel.

This will always be enough

so we lingered.
Stuck to our roots and stayed
while midnight monsoons
drowned and took the others away.
To escape the chill, we tangled
tendrils of whatever plant
had decided to grow on our skins.

We stuck fast, we stuck hard-
cell walls can't keep us apart

but I love that they keep you in.

I've tucked you in your cell, bound,
pressed between the soft covers--
the pages of a book--
and hidden the key somewhere,
in another old volume of leather and straps.

The towers teeter towards you
toppling Tolkien and Twilight and the Crystal Cave--

There is a release here, of sorts,
for those who care to look.

For whoever takes the time to read this note:
take my wife. Take her out tonight.

Dance with her under the stars and wonder
how starlight got trapped in her hair.

Listen to her book-club stories
(because I never had the time)
and laugh when she tells you
about the time I sold her childhood
books to the children next door.

Hold her hand when it gets dark
(if she laughs softly, she's afraid)
and tell she's beautiful
because I never told her enough.

You have my permission to kiss her
as long as you do it with respect:
(that's my wife, asshole)

Gently, slowly
as though gravity demands her lips on yours.
Keep it natural.

Kiss her until she forgets
to remember me.
_______________
aaaand to end the year, I pop out cheesy narrative poetry.

To counter.

---
book club met at starbucks,
man watched me from the corner all night,
think he was listening in...

another book club meeting,
after, strange man asked me about books
I had lost as a child, said
he wanted a laugh.

next week,
suggest the club meet at starbucks across town

I read her skin like my favorite novel

memorizing the lines and passages of time
and tracing her character outlines

until we hit the climax

-- they call it the apex of emotion
I call it the pinnacle of her arch

because her back becomes broken dialogue
monologues reduced to gasps

while the innermost character struggles are flung
wide open, until a million errors spill out
punctuation out the window
grammar out through the door

-- I can't wait to correct her.

I read her skin like my favorite novel
there's something different every time.

You could be my favourite piece of fiction;
there are webs of ink beneath your skin
and I have traced them and drawn from them
and memorized their lines. Even pictures speak volumes but

I would say you were the forest
King Haggart saw in my eyes—
if I thought you would understand—
the light in the book of Kells, and
dawn in Helen's arms—

te adivino detrás de todas las paginas
but we don’t speak the same language
and picture books just aren’t the same.

i once told her that she was a forest

her canopy was rife with creativity
and imagination, wonder
maybe even magic

but inside
she had pitfalls
and i glimpsed her inside once
reading her favorite, Hobbes

man is wolf to man she quoted
but i told her she was wrong
your mind is wolf to me

she was the last girl i ever followed
into the woods.

I would follow you into the forest
but I'm scared you'll forget
you once spoke in awe of what it means
for a deer to pass in the woods.

I have learned to fear hunters,
the deep roots of trees,
and these lessons are not taught gently.

Sot sit by me and speak softly
and I'll try to forget
just how sharp your teeth really are.
