Okay, it seems that the current way the Point System determines your points is its main criticism.

This is my two cents on the solution. Feedback appreciated.

Short Stories, Novels, Reports, Essays, Scripts:
  • 6 to submit
  • 1 for a critique 100-300 words
  • 3 for a critique 300 words or more
Poetry, Lyrics, Other/Experimental, Art/Photography
  • 4 to submit
  • 1 for a critique 100-200 words
  • 2 for a critique greater than 200 words
No points for any critiques less than 100 words.

If a person is only doing critiques less than 300 words (or 200 for poetry/other/art), they will have to do six (or four) before they can submit their own thing.

But if they're constantly doing critiques > 300 words (or 200), then they only have to critique two things before they can submit their own.

Hmm, that might work. We could do it and play it by ear to see how that works out. It would completely stop anyone from abusing the system by posting short, useless crits, and the mods would no longer have to sit around worrying about that.

That actually sounds perfect. That way good critiquers don't have to worry about length at all, and I can't see how anyone would be able to abuse the system. (I'm sure there is a way--there always is--but it's not readily evident, so that's good enough for me.)

Is there still going to be the maximum points limit? I was never sure exactly what the point of that was, if there are rules about posting too much at one time anyway.

It wouldn't be that difficult to abuse it, it would just require people to do a little work...since 300 words is rather lengthy.

People earn points rather easily right now.

The maximum is there so that a person has to actively critique and also post. We didn't want people racking up a hundred points and then not having to crit anything for weeks as their stuff gets critiqued.

Will it stay? Maybe. Maybe not. And maybe we'll figure out some other way to monitor it.

Another problem that arises is giving points to people who just start. I personally think newbies should start at 0, because we have had in the past (although less recently) people coming onto the forum, posting their work, and leaving, never to be heard from again.

At the moment, new members start with about half as many points needed to post. They still need to do some critiquing, but at the moment it might be too easy.

If we went by the first post, we could give them 2 or 3 points, which will take them halfway.
