Why are we all hating on Shawn Mendes

Ok, so here's the deal. Shawn is becoming famous and everyone around me is hating on him. Should we be hating on someone following their dream when we actually need people to encourage us to follow our dream?

Because of that goddamn song Treat You Better. It's so toxic. He's telling a girl that he has decided her boyfriend is awful and she should date him instead because he's a ~gentleman~. What he's not doing is respecting her wishes and allowing her to have a relationship with someone other than him. He's decided that he knows what's best for her, i.e. dating him, and that he knows what's best for her better than she does. He's lurking around and won't give up until she gives him what he wants. It's the Mr Nice Guy stereotype, who calls himself a nice guy and blames women for not falling in love with him.

"He's just not right for you"-- seriously? That's for HER TO DECIDE. STOP STALKING HER.

I have thoughts about this song, yes I do.

Treat You Better is the only Shawn Mendes song I've ever heard, because it's the only one that gets airplay. And I hate it, so I'm not about to look further into the artist. Same deal with Robin Thicke and Blurred Lines. Blurred Lines is the only Robin Thicke song I've ever heard, and it was super rapey; I'm not interested in listening to anything else by an artist whose biggest hit is so toxic.

But Treat You Better is not toxic. believe me, i know from experience that guys generally know when a girls boyfriend is dangerous. Plus, the song wasn't about real life. I have always been taught not to take lyrics literally because to do so would mean to form a false view of the singer and why they are singing what they are singing. Why do you have so much hate for him?

Okay so I log on to this website after about 3 years, jut wanting to think about how my writer days started out and I see this thread??? Umm please shawn is amazing. I didn't even think he had any haters and if y'all saying his song "Treat You Better" is toxic, then I guess you've never watched the video. The girl he was singing to was being physically abused by her lover. So is it wrong for him to say he can treat her better? or advice her to leave? just go ahead and watch the video so you can place the song in the right context.
