This isn't going to be a vote thing primarily because we don't really have the time to do a vote for the amount of prompt suggestions we'll likely get. People need time to write stuff for this.
The prompts are for the two contests we're going to have for the YWO magazine for fiction and the one contest for poetry. Here is how it needs to break down:
--Contest One (Fiction): Something basic, such as a word, an idea, or a thing.
--Contest Two (Fiction): Something theme-based and written in such a way that it seems like it could be genre, but doesn't have to be.
--Contest Three (Poetry): Something basic, just like the first fiction contest.
Make as many suggestions as you like for each category (please put them in categories so I know what you're suggesting them for). I'll pick the ones I like most, or ones that seem to have a lot of support in this thread. We may save the other ideas for future contests.
Have at it!

I like the theme of a post apocalyptic world. I think a lot of interesting ideas could be presented with this theme.
Maybe a story that deals with at least ONE creature from Greek mythology, somewhere in the story. I bet we could get hundreds of different stories out of that theme.
Perhaps a story about the future in which a famous person who died, never actually died, but faked their death. And now they are back.

John Lennon.
JFK
MLK.
You name it...

I'm not sure which category this would fit in, but you can use the prompt that started my story if you want:
"Do you want to find out what 'Or else' means?" "Dear God, yes!"

"You wake up and it's the middle of the night, you realize you're in the Louvre (if you don't know what that is... please don't ask me... I might kill myself...) and you can't get out, you have to spend an entire week there, there is no one else. What happens during that week? (You have food, and all essentials to live)"
"You are told you have 48 hours to live, complete your life"
"You discover a giant Winged Marshmellow, you fly it to a city in the clouds where you find ... continue this."
"A group of ants have gathered at your doorstep, they bring before you a dead cockroach and carry megaphones into which they say, your sacrifice my liege, what shall you have us do next. Continue..."
You're an Alien traveling in space when you crash into a UFO... inside there are these weird creatures with appendages and oddly shaped heads, they have to leg type things and two arms, upon seeing you they attack, continue."
I don't know, that's all I got...

Well, for prompt one I was thinking maybe something along the lines of the good old fashioned English tests for elementary students; write a story based on a picture.
Prompt two could be what the world would be like now if the colonizing countries had never decided to spread out and colonize
As for three, I dunno. I don't do poetry.

I'm not very original...so I'm sorry I really can't think of anything.
Okay I have SOMETHING...
But it wouldn't really work unless we had color print if we ever get to that stage.
I did a "Write about a Picture" contest on TW a while back. I've actually been thinking of starting it up here........................
.................
..
So umm...totally useless.

Hmm, I was thinking, but someone already thought of the picture idea, so...
Have a fantasy thing happen (I can't think of anything at the moment), and at the end it turns out to be a dream or a story or something else.
Eh, best I can do, sorry :P. I might be back with more...

You guys don't have to be original. You can suggest prompt ideas based on a word. Such as saying "snow". People can just write a story with that in it, whether literally or metaphorically.

Um...perhaps using a famous quote by EAP and asking them to write a story or..response to that...
That's what we did for UIL, using a quote and responding.
Er.... giving the person one word or object, but they have to describe it in the story without saying what it is...
That's all I got.

What would happen if scientists made a drug that allowed you to live forever and it was made legal to have?
That could be interesting?

Another prompt I used in the early chapters of my story, but I could never really do it justice because of where I was in the plot:
Write a story centered around a duckpond. Bonus points for each character who gets thrown in. :]

OK this may not be a completely amazing idea but someone picks three letters then have to put them in any order. So for example, ABC. Then everyone needs to write a short story whose title has three words and the start A-B-C.
I don't know how good it is but it is the only thing I can come up with.

All suggestions are good ones. Even ones that you don't have to think about. More suggestions everyone! I want to start the contests pretty quick here!
