Mmm~~ *Begins story* ..

My mom found him in the backyard last night and while I'm not cat expert, I'd guess he couldn't be older than a month. We called the local no-kill shelter and the woman was so unemotional and uncaring I wanted to just drive over and bash her head in, seriously >( She was all like "O. We can't take him in he's too young. Just leave him outside and the mom'll come back for him." Meanwhile it's FREEZING and raining, what the fuck ? The other animal shelter was closed, the petshop wouldn't take him, and no one that we knew could/would take him either. So, even though my mom absolutely skeeves animals (except for our dog: she's in denial but she definately loves him), we took him in and put him in a nice cozy box with a bunch of sweaters n__n annnnnd *points to the top* those were some pictures I took of the little dude. They would have come out 10 x better if only my parents would buy me my baby (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7026069&st=canon+rebel&lp=5&type=product&cp=1&id=1099394810083)now TT0TT .. or a Nikon. That wouldn't be so bad either hehe.

But anyway! We found a lady who took him in for the night and today we're going for an hour drive to drop him off to another person who'll take care of him. Shows you that I don't mind using my Saturday to help a kitty but would DESPISE wasting it on another person (:

Lesson : PLEASE! Spay/neuter your pets so they don't add to the homeless animal population!

Lol, wish I could!
But we gave him to the shelter this morning but we saw my lacrosse coach there and she said when the kitten's all weaned and ready for adoption she'll take him in :D

I don't believe in neutering pets. Yeah, you'll say that it stops them from doing this, that and whatever but it can also drive them to depression. True, we humans and dolphins are the only animals that have sex for pleasure, but that doesn't mean other animals can't feel loneliness.

They look so yummy! :D

*I mean that in a non-predator way*

But it's a shame I'm in Canada. I'd buy one off you.

I wish I had a cat. They're cool. But I prefer dogs, much more fun. ^^

**refrains from bashing Shadow over the head with a binder**

Shad, spaying and neutering is REALLY important! Not only does it help control populations, but altered animals are tend to be happier, calmer, and more trainable.

And, just for the record, spayed/neutered animals can still mate. They just don't have babies later. :)

Wow Julia! He looks really little!!! Have you done some research as to how to take care of him? If he's as young as he looks, he still needs to be drinking milk, not eating solid foods. Want me to PM ya with more info?

Good luck with the little cutie!

Well, China is extremely overpopulated. Are you suggesting that, because of that, we should give males versectomies (probably spelt that wrong)? And I wasn't referring to the sex part, as I said, they don't do it for pleasure, they feel loneliness from not having children. I realise I should have made that clear earlier.

Well, in my opinion, humans, for the most part, can and should realize and understand the problems they could potentially create by overpopulating.
Animals, on the other hand, don't think "Gee, if I have kids, they might end up in an animal control facility because my owner won't be able to care for them all." As you yourself stated, they do it because it's instinct. They're attempting to pass on their genes to the next generation. However, in today's human-made society, it's usually not acceptable to have packs of feral dogs running around, and no one wants to euthanize "extra" animals. The solution? Spay and neuter.

I'd like to see a link or some evidence on the depression/loneliness of altered animals thing you keep mentioning. Statistics show that altering can help control aggression and make an animal more comfortable in a domestic environment, that it has health benfits, and that (obviously) it stops reproduction. This is significant evidence for me to support the practice.

A sure-fire way to change your mind about spaying/neutering animals: visit a humane society, one with a high-euthanization rate if possible. Wander around, interact with some dogs... realize that they are on death row, being penalized for a crime they didn't commit. Then tell me how you feel.

PS: Sorry Julia! I do believe we've hijacked your thread! :)

Obviously, I can't come up with any evidence to show you over the net (if I use Wikipedia, that would be wrong) but I can assure you of that. Also, neutering makes animals weaker (mostly males, but females get it too). I realise that, in this society, no, we don't need feral dogs running around. Best solution? Put them in the countryside. That way, they won't get in the way or harm anybody (unless someone goes up to them and deliberately torments them, in which case they deserve it). This can also solve overpopulating in rabbits and solve the problem of fox hunting.

Okay... how can you assure me? Have you had personal experience with a dog that was strong and happy with his life when he was intact and then weak and depressed after he was neutered? What exactly do you mean by weak? Physically, emotionally, mentally?

Well, at first that sounds great, but the more you think about it, the more flaws you can see. First, if feral dogs were released into relatively undisturbed environmental communities, they would certainly cause a disruption. They would push out native predators (just like humans have pushed wolves and coyotes off their land) and diminish prey populations. What happens when this "countryside" is filled up? Because those dogs that you released would obviously reproduce, plus you're adding more dogs so... I can see this countryside overflowing very fast. And where would the feral dogs go next? Cities. Why not? There's plenty of food... Anyway, another flaw in that is the sad fact that the people dealing with these dogs have to scrape up money for euthanasia - no way would most of them be able to pay to ship homeless dogs off to some remote area.

This dog overpopulation issue is a tough one... there's no happy answer, at least that I've found. We either have to euthanize, or let huge numbers of them suffer in squalor of run-down shelters. But really, the solution needs to be directed at the source of the problem - spaying and neutering animals!
