View Full Version : number of points members get upon joining.
Just joined members who have done no crits have 5 points. This is often enough to post some work, or to post something after the barest hint of a critique. Why not reduce it to 2 or 3 points - or no points - that way we'll get slightly fewer post-and-runs.
Right. They have 5 points, and submitting in the Other Work section requires only 4 points (like art work and/or Photography, etc).
But, Global Mods and Sheriffs are mainly responsible for moderating posts, so, if a member posts in that section without critiquing, we'll know for sure. Hence, we'd either delete, or close his thread (most probably close it) until he submits a decent critique.
And, also, if he does post a poor critique then submit in the poetry/lyrics/novels/short stories sections, then we'll do the same thing. Delete his critique. Close his submission/thread. Notify him about it. Explain the deal. Wait for him to do what's required from him. Reopen his thread.
So, I don't think we really need to change the number of points . . .
. . . do we?

I've suggested this multiple times a while ago, but now am waiting for the big ol' update that's gonna happen soon™

I think 5 points is an appropriate amount of points especially because upon entering the site many new members are anxious to post their work which often prose. Prose takes 10 points to post so one pretty good critique by a new member would allow them to post their work. Allowing newbies post their work sooner can and probably will encourage them because for the most part they come to this site to share their work and letting them post their work soon makes it less stressful to them.
Does that make sense?
(ignore the ranting-ness of of it please. Also I think there were a few run on sentences.)

They're supposed to do at least two critiques before posting - I believe that is going to be mandatory when the update comes along, although I could be remembering it wrong.
I think reducing the number of points is a good idea - a member should do more critiques than posting their own work, and becoming a good critic makes them much more valuable to the site. I mean, sure we want to encourage them to stay, but we don't want a bunch of newbs running around who can't critique to save their life but are still posting loads of work.

If a few more people throw up support for dropping the points, I'll put them at zero.

It's a good idea. Let's make it so.

I support, too.
If you get newbies into the habit of critiquing, they're more likely to come back rather than just posting their work and never returning.
I don't think most newbies actively think 'ooh, I'll post my work, get advice, then run away' -- I think they just forget, or can't be bothered to check back.
So if you force them to get involved in the site before they dump their work on us, the ones who stick at it long enough to post work are likely to be the more dedicated newbies.
In conclusion, I vote for zero points for newbies (:

Yeah, start 'em off with no points. If they can figure out how to do decent critiques, they'll get enough points easily enough. And anyway, having your first literature thread closed has to be somewhat embarrassing for newbies (not to mention a disappointment; you finally post only to find out you won't be getting any feedback?), and this will hopefully stop us from having to do that as often.

It would be nice. We have an awful lot of closed threads.
Although, it does keep our mods hopping. :sarcasm:

I support it. 'Cause I go with the floooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow...
And I want to make it harder for newbs to post rubbish critiques.
Kay kay. Obviously, I wasn't sure about the whole droppin' points to zero thing, but since you guys make it sound like a good idea that'd get newbies to crit well and be dedicated to the site, then, yeah, I agree.
Off with the 5pointssystem'shead.

I think I missed most of this, but yeah, I'll just say that I agree with dropping all five points. Do it. DO IT!
