Book Covers

So, in our wonderfully productive chat room, we had this idea to make a thread where everyone could post pictures of book covers they'd made.

It could be for your own work, or something you made for someone else, as long as you created it. Maybe you drew it by hand or used Photoshop, GIMP, or some other sort of thingy (I'm so literate when it comes to computer stuff, yah noe), or painted it, whatever it is.

I totally forgot about this thread, even though I've spent most of this week making covers. xD

This is one that was originally a DVD cover which I made for my Media Studies coursework last year, using my novel, Hamartia, as a premise, but I modified it for a book cover. The background is a picture I took from a moving bus going through London, using a very bad camera without a flash. The boy is my brother. PS, Lykaios Maddigan is my internetty/penname because my name's too small and boring for a book, I feel.

This one is a cover I made during Nano for the novel she was writing then. The pictures are just stock photos I've recoloured/artied on.

And this is a cover for my novella, which I call The Other Boy, because the real title's annoyingly long. Made using pan watercolours, Gouache and acrylics. Oh, and seriously heavy paper, because I'm too lazy to stretch normal paper. :3

Honestly, the cover made me think of books by Enid Blyton, you know, with the tree and the toadstools and all that ;)You should think of illustrating some covers for the Blyton books, really. Have you read them? And if so, which ones?
I really would love to see some good covers for the Blyton fairy tales :D

Pretty cool work, guys. How are you making them? Where do you get the images from? Very curious because some of these covers are better than what publishers are putting out there. I might have to hire one of you to make the cover for a future issue of SBS! :P

I use GIMP and stock from like... deviantart and random other places that have free stock.

Shaun - I took my own photos for the Hamartia one as it was for coursework (DVD cover version, though) and everything had to be our own work. Alice's cover was made from google images (she gave me some images and key ideas from her novel and used Google to look for stuff that would fit together, then I added extra reflections with paintbrush in Gimp, for the buildings because it looked odd with miss-matched reflections) and the last one I painted and then just added the text in Gimp.

I had GIMP on my parents' desktop, but I never really figured out how to use it, so I didn't bother putting it on my laptop. I got Photoshop, though. Then again, I don't really know how to use Photoshop either. I really should just take a minute to read about how to use either one... xD

If you want to for fun and it wouldn't be a hassle... that'd be awesome. Should I PM you like, a summary of the story or what, so you have an idea what the novel is about? (I already have one written up.)

I cannot post links until I reach ten posts, so I plan on spamming here until I reach ten! Which is ironic given the reason I cannot post links.

So here was my first ever foray into writing (a Nanowrimo novel years ago). Suffice to say the actual writing didn't turn out well; I turned to poetry instead and never looked back. But I've still kept everything on my laptop, and look back, sometimes, for nostalgia purposes.
