View Full Version : The Site Look and Feel

Does anyone feel the site looks too plain/boring with all the gray? Does anyone think we should try to add more color into it?

Imelda

It's soothing on the eyes, I like it.

Andy
02-01-2008, 08:26 PM
I like it too, but I think having a few more colors in small doses might be nice.

For example, these. It's really plain: http://www.youngwritersonline.net/images/icons/icon1.gif

I like it, but there's no harm in playing around is there?

Alex
02-01-2008, 09:19 PM
I don't mind it, but toying with some colors wouldn't be a horrible thing?

Andy
02-01-2008, 09:23 PM
Maybe we could turn this into a contest: find some cool icons to use when making a post?

Jessica
02-01-2008, 09:39 PM
I think I'm going insane. Sometimes it looks pinkish to me on some parts O.O

Carraka

It's soothing, and I like it as it is, but a little color wouldn't hurt. I don't think. It depends. You guys do know about colors, right?

Andy
02-01-2008, 10:28 PM
You guys do know about colors, right?
Yeah, I remember some of the things I learned in preschool. Even though it's been awhile.

Ichigo
02-01-2008, 10:33 PM
But there is also color in people's posts ie. avatars, and signatures and whatnot.
So no going really overboard on it. I like it soothing to the eyes.

Carraka
02-01-2008, 11:36 PM
I mean -- you guys won't stubbornly stick to an orangle-blue-pink-gray theme, will you?

Nyx
02-02-2008, 03:37 AM
It's nice and easy on the eyes, but maybe some colours could lighten it up a bit.

Andy
02-02-2008, 07:03 AM
Okay, cool. For starters I made the blue book icons brighter. Anyone have any ideas?

Shaun
02-02-2008, 07:11 AM
I'm sort of incapable of making an objective assessment on the colors as I'm sort of blinded by 'love' for the site...
But I guess darkening things a little might not hurt. Just don't make it look retarded or fluffy...

Nyx
02-02-2008, 07:13 AM
It doesn't look fluffy:P But I agree...darkening it a bit would help...to start with:D

Zombified

I always liked TW's set up on the colors.

Maybe make everything a bit darker as mentioned and throw in a bit more blue?

Alex
02-03-2008, 05:24 AM
I wouldn't mind a darker site >.<

GeorgeMichael
02-03-2008, 05:52 AM
I don't know, darker is a little... depressing and moody...

Andy
02-03-2008, 05:53 AM
Perhaps not make the entire site darker, just the borders and/or headers.

Alex
02-03-2008, 06:06 AM
well not the entire site

like any said

some of the headers and stuff

and not like dark as night, unless you're cool with that, then I wouldn't be opposed >.<

Shaun
02-03-2008, 06:58 AM
I like the idea of using blues...I think blue is generally less depressing in its darker states, so if we used some blues and maybe some silver blues, and sort add some more color and emotion to the feel of the site...

Where the heck are all our artists to chime in here?

Nyx
02-03-2008, 08:01 AM
Yea why don't we make the headers a nice shade of navy?

Beautiful
02-03-2008, 09:04 AM
I'm not sure on the whole forum in one colour. I'd change it if possible.
More interesting.
:)
I like interesting, it's fun. :D

I think the Blues colours could work loads. (:

Imelda
02-03-2008, 02:55 PM
I like silver. :( So many other sites are blue ...

Beautiful
02-03-2008, 03:15 PM
That's true....
Mabe an original unique colour?
Pink? Purple? Green?

Carraka
02-03-2008, 03:16 PM
NOT PINK.

I think you should keep silver as a base and just look for ways to add color.

Alex
02-03-2008, 03:33 PM
a light shade of orange?

I'm very artistic you know, I was the only kid in a 125 person grade to get a B in 6th grade art =]]]

Andy
02-03-2008, 04:44 PM
Blue's been proven to be the most pleasing color to most people. I think it wouldn't hurt if we made the headings blue. That would mean almost everything on this page except for the gray background of your posts, and everything that looks like the same color.

Perhaps is the gradients were changed to a blue <-> light gray one?

Beautiful
02-03-2008, 05:09 PM
I think Orange.

Imelda
02-03-2008, 05:27 PM
PURPLE.

Or silver. Which would require less work.

jordanisonfire
02-03-2008, 05:28 PM
I think black and white would look good, but, obviously, some people aren't going to like that. :)

Alex
02-03-2008, 05:34 PM
make a tye-dye background =]]]

jordanisonfire
02-03-2008, 05:39 PM
Haha, that would be awesome. :D

Alex
02-03-2008, 05:46 PM
YWO 1960's edition we could call it =]]]

Lykaios
02-03-2008, 05:54 PM
I don't think we should change the colour to blue. There are other writing sites that use blue, TW included. Blue is cold and a very common colour. Maybe we could use some warm colours? A nice orange or red, sun-setty colours but light so they aren't hard on the eyes. Also if we had a darker blue background and someone has a blue sig then you can't read it very well.

Alex
02-03-2008, 05:59 PM
I like the idea of a sunset theme

maybe with a brigther shade of purple, orange, yellow, and red

Andy
02-03-2008, 06:04 PM
What about red (not pink). A lot of things on this site are already rad (look around the main page). Perhaps we could go for a gray theme with red headings?

Alex
02-03-2008, 06:05 PM
I think that might be a little jarring, but it couldn't hurt to try

Beautiful
02-04-2008, 06:32 PM
I'm quite liking the Sunset theme. :D Sounds quite interesting. But i agree, not pink, that would possibly make it a little ... OTT..?

Shaun
02-04-2008, 06:47 PM
Hrmm, I have problems with diverging too much with the way the site looks now...if we change the colors too much we have to do a new logo and everything...I like blues, darker blues, silver-blues, etc., because it doesn't diverge too far, but brightens things. I think purple and pink and red would really hurt the feel of the site. We don't want it feeling hippy-ish...

Alex
02-04-2008, 06:52 PM
I just think blue is much too cliché. I would rather see a dark shade of reds and purples but again, its up to the higher ups.

Shaun
02-04-2008, 07:06 PM
It's up to you guys as much as it is up to us (the Admins). If people don't like something we'll change it. We're not a complete dictatorship here :P. You guys do have a say, I just might not personally agree with it :P.

Alex
02-04-2008, 07:25 PM
well its more of a parliament than a dictatorship, but thats debateable

I don't like making decisions, so you guys do what you think is best =]]]

Lykaios
02-04-2008, 09:28 PM
Sunset is good, but subtle. Not bright, (unless wanted) and pink is definatly out, out, OUT.
Purple and red sounds nice, you could add some blue in as well, sea maybe?
No pink though.
Blue is too cliched like Alex said, anything else is great though.
Just not pink.

Alex
02-04-2008, 09:45 PM
no pink

Shaun
02-04-2008, 09:51 PM
Blue is cliche because it is easy on the eyes in most forms. A lot of other colors don't work well on webpages...

Nyx
02-05-2008, 12:00 AM
I think black and white would look good, but, obviously, some people aren't going to like that. :)

That sounds good. Why don't we try that? Dark blues and black and white...that would looks sweet.

Alex
02-05-2008, 01:16 AM
dark blue/black/white boooo

red/purple/black((gray or something darker)) yay!

Nyx
02-05-2008, 01:32 AM
purple and black works too...

But if you guys add ornage to YWO..I'm gone.

Alex
02-05-2008, 01:47 AM
no you aren't

right?

Nyx
02-05-2008, 01:49 AM
no you aren't

right?

If you add orange I am.

Alex
02-05-2008, 01:50 AM
no you're not

don't kid =]]]

Shaun
02-05-2008, 05:28 AM
Well, maybe Andy and I could spend a week at the end of the month trying different color styles and then we can have a vote to see what everyone liked the most? We'd take a day for each scheme in the week and the following week host the vote for a week and have a new scheme for March...

Alex
02-05-2008, 05:32 AM
I like that idea

Shaun
02-05-2008, 05:38 AM
Alright, so we have a few ideas in here to try out, maybe suggest so more you all would like to try so we have seven concrete color schemes to go with. I'll talk to Andy tomorrow about implementing it.

Nyx
02-05-2008, 05:40 AM
Ok cool. Good idea.

Alex
02-05-2008, 05:42 AM
Maybe start a poll of like 20 color schemes and narrow it down to 7? or you guys may want to pick it out yourselves, I'm cool with that to.

Shaun
02-05-2008, 05:44 AM
Alright, I'll bring it up with Andy and see what he thinks. Maybe he already has a bunch in his head...

Alex
02-05-2008, 05:45 AM
Thats why you shoulda voted for him in the Best Contributer poll =]]] hehehe jk

Andy

Nope. Not really, other than mixing some non-gray (blue) colors into it. Something like this:

Shaun

I do agree we should make some changes, but I also don't like the blue one. I think it just pulls me away from what I like about the current template...

naw i like the site the way it is, each one is unique right? it should define the purpose of the beginnings of the site.... black and white is too contrasting for the eye ;D I like gray and white~ almost like black ink on paper... haha... ah I'm not comical at all.

I'm going to be straightforward about this.

The setup and colors are the most mundane tones that I have ever seen on any website. Cheaply-made websites from high school students have more pizazz than this. Wait a minute, I just realized that we are all more or less high school students.

Okay then.

IT'S JUST BORING! Let's put it that way.

My main concern is that we're not getting many new members before the site looks bland, and I'm looking for a style that will look more inviting.

LET'S HAVE PORN!

Uh, I mean, I dunno.

Spice it up a bit for the eyes. ;)
