View Full Version : Poll #16: When Did You Start Writing for Pleasure?
At what age did you start writing for pleasure?
I've been rping since I was 10, writing prose for about 6 months, and poetry for about a year >.<
I started at 15, in high school. I really didn't like reading or writing until then. School was presenting it all wrong... :devious:

Erm...I started one or two years ago. As you guys can see...I'm not that much of an expert. But, I'm getting there. I, mean, I've got art to practice on as well, so it's a challenge splitting my time between both ^^

This should be divided or there should be another poll that says "When did you start taking it seriously?"
I've been writing my whole life, but I didn't start taking it with any seriousness until Senior year of high school and not until I was 19 did I actually sit down and say "I want to write for a living or be published some day". But I've written stories my whole life just for kicks...

I detested writing at school. :D It made me cry.

In terms of not being serious about writing...I probably started around 14, one year before I got serious :P

Especially when all they make you write are essays

For as long as I can remember. I've never had a bigger hobby. :)

I wouldn't think my writing would be cute. I'd be ashamed. :D

When I was in Sixth Grade I wrote a 200 page story... of course it was horrible and I never used quotation marks (It was a novel with "script" mode for when people talked.)
My story was like
blah blah blah detail setting plot blah
Tifa: hello
Zack: Hi.
... so yeah, I knew I liked writing from there... but I was awful... :P

I was fifteen when I started my first novel.
Seventeen when I finished it.
Sixteen when I started short stories.
Seventeen when I decided I want to pursue it as a career.
Seventeen when I started writing lyrics and music.
Current age: Seventeen.
I've been busy.
:D

I started writing short stories when I was in third grade, and I've progressed ever since.
This should be divided or there should be another poll that says "When did you start taking it seriously?"
We could do another poll for that. But this one's about starting to write for pleasure. Both questions vary for everyone.
I started when I was in 3rd grade but that was in farsi, I started writing in english when I was ten I guess...

Pleasure -- first grade, or before then.
Seriously -- sixth grade.
But none of that means anything until I actually finish a novel.
Well I still don't write seriously, if thats what you mean.
I would like to get something published, but I'm not pursuing it as a career so I dunno. Very vague poll Andy, ><

Well now I feel weird ...
You people are all freaks. :p Six years old? You barely know what the alphabet is!

... You insulting me? I'm pretty sure I knew what the alphabet was in 1st grade because I was co-writing and co-illustrating dinosaur adventure chapter books. For pleasure.

Well, of course we don't, but that didn't stop me writing. :D I'd write say 300 words of garbage, stuff with no plot, spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes aplenty. :P

Ooh same here:D
But I guess I'm still not taking it seriously, I got a short story published in StoneSoup when I was 10 but now that I read I'm like how the hell did that get published?!
I don't write alot lately so I guess I've yet to reach the time where I take writing serious.:D

Well, we all think our work is rubbish when we read it, especially if it's work from a while ago. But, if people like it, then it's good stuff. People who know what's good and bad in writing, that is.
there aren't enough people like that though

I wrote my first story when I was 8. I had written some gibberish poems beforehand, but my first story (Outside of writing for school) was when I was 8.

My first story (for fun) was when I was about seven, and I've been writing ever since. =)

I've been writing for my whole life. I used to write strange little fairytales & little kid's things...
I wrote my first "novel" when i was about 8 or 9, but I'd been planning it for almost a year before I actually sat down to write it.
I've never looked back (:

I started writing for pleasure when I was 6 or 7, most likely 7. I started out writing Harry Potter fanfiction and went on from there.

I started writing when I was about seven. My first tale was about a traveling badger... not good.
I just recently started prose and poetry and when I ran into my current group of brilliant friends (whom I loves <3).

I was about 7 when I wrote my first story, mostly due to the fact that my 1st grade teacher was a published author and did a writing workshop for first through third graders in my town. After the workshop I was hooked on writing.

I started actually writing when I was 3 and 3/4 I loved writing random words and would write my mums shopping lists for her but I think I wrote my first few sentences, much as they may not make sense, in reception, when I was 5.

I started writing for pleasure when I started writing, but I'm writing for the pleasure having a book published so I'm not sure that counts.

Yeah it doesn't.
I started writing for pleasure as soon as I knew how to, which was maybe 4 or 5.
Ok, I've come back to edit this. If what Clawfire says counts, I started writing at 3 or 4. I started actually writing when I was 3 and 3/4 I loved writing random words and would write my mums shopping lists for her but I think I wrote my first few sentences, much as they may not make sense, in reception, when I was 5.

I was 6/7/8 or some such age... they all blur together, which is somewhat funny since I'm only 14.

Since I can remember. Before I could write quick enough, my parents had to write down my poems. I remember one of my first longer stories quite well. I was probably four when I wrote it.
Around eight-nine was my best moment, though, and around that time I wrote quite a few "novels", some longer and more inmpressive than anything I write now. Oh well.

I started writing for pleasure at about 10, and when I look back at my old writing, I always wonder what I was thinking. My writing has really developed since then.
