4) Have you eaten any pets lately? I'm not that Asian.
5) Do or do you not like Sci-fi? I like it, but fantasy is better.

To newbie:

Hello.

I am.

Carraka
01-24-2008, 11:21 PM

Are you a poet?

pinkydoll
01-24-2008, 11:25 PM
Are you?

Carraka
01-24-2008, 11:27 PM
Are we playing the question game?

pinkydoll
01-24-2008, 11:28 PM
Perhaps.

Carraka
01-24-2008, 11:42 PM
Aha! No, we aren't, because in the question game, you are only allowed to ask questions. That is good, because I am bad at the question game.

... Wanna play the question game? It seems like it would fit you perfectly.

pinkydoll
01-24-2008, 11:48 PM
Thank you, but no, thank you.

Carraka
01-24-2008, 11:50 PM
I think I've exhausted my Welcome Tank. I'll leave you to your devices, as sinister as they may seem.

Edit: I retract my previous comment, seeing as I lied twice. You are quite laconic.

Rafael Domination
01-24-2008, 11:59 PM
That would have been question 15. How many mistakes did you find? ;P

Carraka
01-25-2008, 12:02 AM
I don't see much point in a find-the-mistakes questionnaire, unless we wish to test the writing abilities of incoming newbies. Isn't that ... too much PRESSURE?!?!

Rafael Domination
01-25-2008, 12:04 AM
Aw...okay. I'll stick with the nice questions. We could add more if you want...more...erm...relevant questions...but it might be too much pressure

:P :D  ^^

Carraka
01-25-2008, 12:11 AM
What about the :pirate: v :llama: v :ninja: debate? That's pretty relevant.

Rafael Domination
01-25-2008, 12:12 AM
I know...in YWO it's over, but for the world, who knows...they might not side with llamas :D

Hey! Welcome!

Raffy covered the questions () so not much else to say...

pinkydoll
01-25-2008, 02:05 PM
Llamas.

I don't see to see any exceptional writers here. Besides Isis.

Imelda
01-25-2008, 02:45 PM
Then you haven't read enough of Car.

Or me. XD

Hi, I'm Imelda. You remind me of someone, but I'm not sure who.

pinkydoll
01-25-2008, 02:51 PM
Take your guesses.

Jessica
01-25-2008, 07:19 PM
Hm, I'm trying to figure out who you are, but I know it's probably someone I hate, or I find annoying.

Rafael Domination
01-25-2008, 08:02 PM
Llamas.

I don't see to see any exceptional writers here. Besides Isis.

hmm...almost sounds like J :D

Still, that's what we're all here for - to improve. Any constructive cotribution is fine by me ^^

Shaun

I think there's some sort of misconception that people who want to improve their writing have to start out being great writers...writing is part work, part learning, and part talent. Often times talent doesn't show for a while...that's the whole point of sites like YWO...to help people improve their writing...

pinkydoll
01-26-2008, 12:12 AM
However, most don't improve at all.

Nyx
01-26-2008, 12:16 AM

Thanks for the cynicalism....:glare:

pinkydoll

You're very much welcome.

Rafael Domination
01-26-2008, 01:30 AM
ahahahahah! ^^

the newb's got spunk. I wouldn't be surprised if it's you-know-who again :P

Nyx
01-26-2008, 01:44 AM
Ahaha you know who, are we talking about Voldemort here?:P

Shaun
01-26-2008, 02:29 AM
It doesn't matter if they don't improve. That's not the point. The people who don't try to improve or can't improve will eventually fall off and find something else to do. They aren't going to listen to mean spirited criticism or name calling, because such people are usually too stubborn to pay it any head, or they just have a fit over it.
You just give the advice, if they don't listen to it, then don't give them the advice again. I've done that before with people. I've simply told them "I can't help you" because they repeatedly made the same mistake over and over and over and every time I pointed it out they wouldn't fix it. But many will improve. We're talking about people from 12 years old to 25. How many 12 year olds do you know who write to publishing standard? (I've known a few who write really well, but not quite there yet, including some people here who are actually decent writers).
The only way people learn is to be given constructive advice and criticism and those that don't want to learn will just fall off the map eventually.

Rafael Domination
01-26-2008, 03:14 AM
Actually...Pinky...you seem like a bright individual who can put up a few good constructive critiques that could help 'improve' the writers here. That would be most appreciated and would be much more effective than complaining about how sucky some writers are...^^

pinkydoll
01-26-2008, 02:02 PM
Trust me, I'm not who you think I am.

Constructive criticisms? Referring to those ornamented with little flowers?

I don't like beating around the bush.

Me_Lia
01-26-2008, 03:03 PM
We're all not what others think we are.

And I like criticisms ornamented with little hearts better. *smirks*

Oh, yeah, by the way, welcome to YWO.

And because I have neither time not energy to read every post in your welcome-thread, I shall just assume that you are hoping to enjoy YWO.

So, enjoy YWO. :)

Imelda

I know who you are. I know why you're here.

I can't think of any other sinister stuff to say ...

I don't like beating around the bush.

Constructive doesn't need to be ornamented, it needs to be helpful.

Alex
01-26-2008, 07:51 PM
agreed, but unless we are going to be welcoming pinkydoll this is probably not the place for this stuf

FEAR ME!! I am enforcer Alex! *grunts uncontrollably*

Apparently you don't like civility either

(And I do know who you are. You're annoying ^^)

Constructive doesn't need to be ornamented, it needs to be helpful.
Nyx has it dead-on.

con·struc·tive –adjective
1. constructing or tending to construct; helping to improve; promoting further development or advancement (opposed to destructive (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=destructive)): constructive criticism.

I like the sound of advancement. :)

pinkydoll
01-27-2008, 01:36 AM
Mine's helpful enough.

I mentioned what they lacked, yet it got deleted.

Double standards, huh?

Yes yes, I'm annoying. Who am I then?

Mentioning what they lack isn't helpful, it's destructive. Mentioning what they lack and telling them how to improve it is constructive.

You-know-who

pinkydoll
01-27-2008, 01:50 AM
Yes, it is. Contrary to what you think, mentioning what they lack would nudge that little nerve strand in their mind to make the absences present the next time.

Simple concept.

You-know-who? So now I'm Voldemort?

Rafael Domination
01-27-2008, 01:52 AM
Maybe :D

Whatever. You'e doing your part. You can me the lysosome of YWO - the person who eliminates the errors of a piece. You point out the absence, others can contribute to HELP the writer fill that absence up.

^^

pinkydoll
01-27-2008, 01:54 AM
Whatever?

That's the worst way to give up an argument.

You can me? I believe that is not grammatically sound.

Rafael Domination
01-27-2008, 01:55 AM
Whoops, thanks for pointing that out. :D

I meant to say, 'you can be'.

Besides, arguing will get us nowhere.

Andy
01-27-2008, 01:57 AM
If anyone's unclear on what kind of critiques are acceptable for this site, you can find our guide here (http://www.youngwritersonline.net/showthread.php?t=213). It covers everything, including why not to over-praise a piece.

Since that seems to be all that needed clearing up, I'm closing this thread.

Shaun

Pointing out flaws and nothing else is not helpful because that person, clearly, doesn't understand why something is wrong. Pointing out flaws and giving them right and wrong and perhaps pointing them in the right direction does help them because they can take steps to avoid it.

It's not a double standard. Your posts were deleted because all they did was say "wrong wrong wrong" and absolutely nothing else, which doesn't help anyone at all other than they know something is wrong. But why is it wrong? What is the right way to do something? How can they fix it? That's what constructive crits do. They point out things that are wrong, say very clearly why, and offer advice on how to improve that. Saying "the rhyme scheme is weak" is not the same as saying "the rhyme scheme is weak because the meter for each line is too varied for a rhyme scheme to work here, making it feel forced".
