The book starts on an ordinary girl, named Isabella Swan. She moves to Forks with her dad; her mum lives in Pheonix.
When Bella goes to school, she sees the most beautiful people - which are vampires in disguise. these people are all brothers and sisters. One of them, Edward Cullen, is so drawn to the scent of Bella's blood. His brother - the newest member of the Cullen family - is also drawn to Bella, but only in the thirst way.
Edward is from then on, feels determined to protect the precious scent of Isabella Swan's blood scent; they soon fall in love, but danger surrounds every turn and step their relationship dares.

The twilight series is based on vampire struggles and the spark that ignites old legends, between werewolfs.
Bella - in Eclipse, has to choose between her "irrevocible" love for Edward, and her close, bonding, friendship with Jacob; in the end, she is pained with the loss of a good friend - which is a werewolf - but is comforted by Edward's assurances and guidance.

The critics say its a compelling, hynotic prose of the usual teenage, sexual tension.

I think its a really good read!

Those books are horrible. No me gustan :(.

The character Bella has absolutely no goals, ambitions, hopes, dreams, or interests in anything. She's colorless, the only thing that propels the story/franchise is adolecent teenage girls raking out cash because they think it's something new and fresh when it's not. The plot is mwah, so so...

Bella isn't flat, she's so in love that she's lost sight of her other ambitions, yes the book's aimed at teenage girls but no one claimed it was something new, the style of Meyer's writing is great, she is anything but a bad writer. :glare:

Huh? When I did I say someone was a bad writer? I just said I didn't care for it and stated the reasons why...no me gustan.

Most girls do think that it's new though, the ones that I see at work at least... and when did Ms. Meyers ever state this dreams that she lost sight of...?

I can't remember much in the way of ambitions either, but I only read the one book about a year ago, so you can't really go by me. I did find Bella pretty bland and I think that was what lost me (I can put up with most anything from characters except blandness!)

I never said you said she was a bad writer, I'm just stating that she's not.
There's no specific dream stated, but it mentioned a lot how she loses sight of dreams and such because all she can focus on is Edward. And she does spend all her college fund (which means she was planning on college), on a plan to bring excitement back to her life when Edward's gone.

I agree the book isn't interesting to most boys.

I have met guys who admitted to liking it, which makes it all the worse...

It wasn't really well written, but the first one was at least entertaining. The second one was still... alright. Unfortunately, the third one was absolute shit. Meyer's characters had never been extremely well-defined, but they all started acting unlike themselves. It was painful to read. I cringed because some parts read like fucking fanfics. Bella needs to restrain herself.

hm..
i quite like Meyer's writing
i think that the way she writes and expresses things, give the audience a small detailed but still intricate view of her life and events that happen...
i guess it is reasonable though that Bella acts the way she does in the third book; she was 'irrevocably' in love with Edward, and then he just leaves.. it may be hard to understand but i think everything Stephenie does is inspiring; mostly including to the people who really like the Twilight series.

First and second weren't bad; I kind of got over the whole obsession after New Moon, and I hated Eclipse. She dragged it on for ages. >.> Overall, Stephenie Meyer isn't a bad writer, but the plot was only so-so and Bella annoyed me. The series did inspire some hilarious fanfiction, and Twilight'd be one of those teen-lit novels I read when I'm not in the mood for anything else.

I bought twilight for my trip, but my mom took it away cause she obviously thought I'd read it in 2 days.
But reading these I can't wait to read it. I'm not sure if vampires are really my thing though. Oh well.

I ahve never even seen thew book let alone read it. Vampires isn't my thing and this is the first place I have actually heard something of what it's about.

TW has a twilight bashing club, I had a look once to see what it was about . . . Not pretty for Twilight lovers.

I might read it one day but I'm in no hurry and the bookshops near me, don't stock it, so meh, someday. ^^

Okay so...

I REALLY liked the first one. Arh, it was amazin.
The second one was silly, because I realized I only like the first one because Edward, and he was in like what...30 40 pages? Jacob can go and kiss my ass he's a freak.

And I just got the third one so I'ma go and read it now.

Majyk

I'm reading it right now. It's not the type of book I usually read, but it is entertaining. I only started reading it so I could understand what everyone was talking about, actually, but it's better then I expected. I'm not sure what could possibly happen in the second one, though. I guess I'll probably read it anyway, but from what I've heard, I don't think I'll like it much.

Ichigo

But see I think Edward is written to sound amazing, you have to see him from other angles. For one thing he's overprotective. Have you read the 3rd book? If you haven't then DO NOT READ THE SPOILER.

And I think he's really selfish for leaving.

Ichigo
04-08-2008, 02:34 AM

I'm really impartial to Bella and Edward (sorry Edward fans). They annoy me fairly easily. I'm not really into the whole romance thing. Even Bella by herself annoyed me. She's very oblivious.

Stephanie Meyer writes well, though her plotline is structured... not well. With New Moon, it annoyed me how what seemed to be the problem is still an issue in Eclipse and how randomly a new conflict comes up. Most of the time, I have no idea where anything is going because none of the problems seem linked to each other at all. It frustrates me that everything is so random.

I think what keeps me reading them is my how much I adore the supporting characters. They're so much more animated than Bella and Edward, have much more engaging histories. All of the werewolves are my savior. I got really annoyed with the teeange boys in Bella's school. I do not know teenage boys that act like that and they just all seem so unrealistic. The werewolves seem more human than any of the other characters, ironically enough. And Alice is absolutely amazing and engaging. And the rest of the Cullen's are pretty awesome, especially Emmett and Jasper.

My main problem with the series was her amateuristic writing skills. It really distracted me when she used the same comparisons over and over and over. I thought they were good, but I'm flexable to make fun of it too. It's lots of fun. :)
I bought The Host, but haven't started it yet. I hope she's improved.

i actually enjoyed the series quite a bit, although i went into it rather dubiously. i admit that bella is not the most exciting character in the world, but i think her redeemable quality is her love (quoting from her observation on wuthering heights xP). the appeal of the books, imo, comes not from the plots or her writing skills but from the relationships in the book. a lot of people probably relate to (or wish they could) bella -- not that we all have experience dealing with vampires, but more in the area of finding that unconditional love.

i had to admit though, i was pretty peeved with bella in eclipse. what is that girl doing when she already has an edward? =P

I've just read the first one, so...

The book was okay. I was often REALLY annoyed with Bella and how she failed to think things through. Edward got annoying sometimes because he was just so perfect and handsome and controlled and valiant... Renee and Charlie were amuzing. Alice was fantastic, Jasper is AMAZING!!! (he's MINE!) Emmet was enjoyable, Carlisle and Esme were good, Jacob was okay...

Yeah. Basically, the main characters got boring and annoying, the supporting characters were good.

The plot felt kind of empty, with not a lot of action, except at the end, where it was predictable. The writing was so-so. And yet I read it all, and enjoyed it. I think it was prolly all those female teenage hormones that got me through. And the hope of learning more about Jasper. He's amazing. He Emmet, and Alice are my fave characters.

There, my pointless rant is complete. I can go to bed now.

I think you get to learn more about Jasper in the third book. He may appear for a few pages in the second one.

I found out that Meyer is actually writing a parallel book to Twilight, from Edward's point of view. It won't be done for a while yet (her website said that she was only halfway through at this point), but she did post up a very rough first chapter online. I thought it was interesting. I'm not sure how well I'll like the book, considering that plot-wise there won't be anything new...But I'm sure the hormones that got everyone through the other books will be working in Edward's favor. :P

It bothered me how flighty Bella was in the third book.

Before I start, you should know that I am a guy, and I'm not affraid to buy the books or read them.

My bestest friend at school fell in love with the books. She went on how great they were so naturally I had to buy it. I'm glad that i did. I love Meyer's writing style. However, I find the conflicts her characters are thrown into are a bit redundant. But all in all, I really think she's become one of my favorite authors.

(Weird though huh, because I'm a guy?)

I'm currently reading the host. And I have to say she's done a great job on that one too.

I actually like how the characters are so cliche?...In Edwards case anyways. I like how the books don't have much plot, and aren't so...descriptive. It's nice to read something that's nice, and slow pace. It's different, and a sort of risk.
As for Bella's character, I can so relate to that. The clumsiness I mean.

It's sort of creepy how this series sucks you in. It's addictive. I don't even like romance and when I read Twilight I was hooked!

I just checked out New Moon and plan on reading Eclipse and Breaking Dawn when it comes out.

Do you have any idea what makes Twilight so popular and so addictive? I mean, the characters are practically Mary Sue and Gary Stu with vampires thrown in, and it's been done before. This is one of the world's great mysteries...

I went over and looked at the website, and then I had to read the page about how she got Twilight published, and now I'm feeling all this empathy for her, and also this outright rage that I AM NOT PUBLISHED YET ... which is bad, because that means I might read this book one day after all. But I wouldn't be caught dead with it. So, I'm going to have to secretly sneak into my neighbor's house (we have their key) and steal upstairs in the dead of night to find ...

Naw. Maybe I'll just borrow it.

What I find so amazing is that she never wrote a book before...this was her first ever. And that she had that dream that was so clear for her, and which she developed into a full story. Also, she said that she kept hearing her characters speak, so it was like she couldn't write it all down fast enough.

I think she is an amazing storyteller, but she's not an amazing writer--not sure if that makes sense. She's good developing her plots, the twists and turns, and making them all fit so well and all. However, when she starts getting into all the mushy romance stuff, she sounds so over the top romantic like those cheap romance books (that I never read ;)). I skipped through a lot of pages in the Twilight series because of that--like in New Moon when Edward starts telling Bella about his love for her..."Before you my life was like a moonless night..." Argh! Makes me want Jacob to just throw Bella over his shoulder and take her home with him. Enough w/all this dopey romantic stuff.

I got through a quarter of The Host but got busy w/other stuff. I plan to get to it next week when I finish my 2 other books on my nightstand.

Rouge
07-09-2008, 03:25 AM
She just can't write real well. It's not just the romance scenes, it's the descriptions that killed it for me.

Cold, marble-like, freezing, cold, marble-like, god-like, cold.
That's all Edward was.
Never anything more for THREE books.

This is why I like The Host better. She got better at writing. Amen.

Twilight makes me cringe with all the adolescent girls in my school swooning over a fictional guy.

Bella's a rather boring protagonist too. Her only goal in the whole series it seems is to be eaten out through her neck. Alice would be much more interesting.

I plan to be first in line, even if it means camping outside the theatre. Even though it premieres on a school night...

My sister thinks it is strange that I get all huffy when I watch the trailer. I keep screaming 'the scene in the meadow isn't supposed to go like that!' .. and when Bella says she's not afraid of Edward he throws her on his back instead of growling and pouncing on her. How lame. They totally messed it up, and Robert Pattinson is NOT Edward-y enough.

Forks would be an interesting place to live, especially considering every myth comes true. Maybe you'll find some faeries dancing in the rain..

Ichigo

Sofiel

Haha, sure he's gorgeous and he'd 'dazzle' me if I met him...
But he's too serious all the time (at least in the trailer). I'll admit that Edward is supposed to be serious.. but the scene in the meadow... GRRR!

I always figured he'd be more amused. Bella asked the right question after all, 'how long have you been seventeen'.

The only problem with Forks (other than it being 3 hours north of me, not including the ferry crossing time, so I couldn't go to the event they held there a year or so ago) is that it's such a depressing little town. Also, SM got it wrong when she said it was the rainiest town in the U.S., but it's probably close to it.

The guy playing Jacob is growing on me. I look forward to the later movies (if they are made), though, when his hair will be short instead of long and in a ponytail.

Robert P. is fine with me all except his over-fluffy hair. I kind of have a hair fetish, I know. ;)

There's a "truck scene" where RP is crouched down with Bella (don't want to say more in case anyone hasn't read it). The look he gives her is very Edward-like...very predatory. Hopefully he can pull off Edward in most of the other scenes too.

I work at our library, right? I walk in there to tell them that I'm not going to be working there anymore past Thursday because band is starting up and lo and behold a whole box filled with Breaking Dawn. I said "IS THAT WHAT I THINK IT IS?!" and they said, "oh. Yeah. Breaking Dawn. You can't open it, because it hasn't hit the stores yet." I said, "my friend and I are going to a midnight release party for it on Friday, but OMG I can't believe you have it." (Picture me very excited llike because i was.) And the head librarian said, "Well, Shelley, if the box goes missing we'll know who took it." Then I said, "if I slit the tape, take a book, and re-seal it, you'll never know." all sly-like, you know?

I was sad that they wouldn't let me take a book. They were RIGHT THERE. Right beside my feet and I had not the power to read them.

^Whoohoo! Now I don't feel like a flamer being the only guy here who bought it and is reading it.

Oh, don't worry. All cool guys have their adorkable little guilty pleasures. Since I'm on the internet and no one can tease me in real life, I'll admit that even I sneak a peek at a few romance novels my sister reads. I dunno, the girls on the front cover just seem so hot, and maybe if I read about them, I'll get a better picture as to whether they're my type or not! :D

Rouge

I bet you do read a little more.

Thanks for the review. I've pondered wheather or not to pick up one of the books from the series and now i may. What 's kept from doing so is wondering if they're vampire mytholody background is original and not just the whole bad in sunlight and garlic repelent stuff. It's gets boring after awhile.

Nyx
07-31-2008, 04:44 AM
If that's what worries you then you should definately go read the books. The books have a twist to the old mythology.

I LOVE THE JACOB ACTOR!
I only wish they wouldn't have his hair long...but that would defeat the purpose of him playing Jacob I guess...

Majyk
