Vote for what you thought was the best movie made in 2007 :) We'll see what the everyone thinks the top ten movies of the year.
aw, this should've been a multiple choice. :P

I thought about it, but this makes it harder :)
So Superbad huh? :)
Ichigo
01-07-2008, 02:20 AM
Superbad was an awesome movie...
McLuvin. *snickers*
I haven't seen most of those though...
So Superbad it is for me.
300 was a good movie to quote, and I really liked it but I don't think it's the best... and wow I should watch more movies.
I really really really want to see Juno though.
Yea, I voted for Superbad too, that movie is just unbeatable.
But I really want to see Juno too.:)

I'm for Sweeney Todd - can't beat Tim Burton and Johnny Depp!
I haven't seen sweeny Todd yet...

I can't really pick. Stardust is the only one on that list I would vote for, but it's not my favorite for the year. My favorite isn't up there...
What is your fav., Shaun?
Shaun
01-07-2008, 04:30 AM
Honestly, I Am Legend. I think that was truly an amazing film and probably the best Will Smith film I've ever seen. It was the one film where all of his talents could be shown effectively. Stardust takes a close second for me. Despite what the critics say of that film, it was such a cute and lovable film and I thoroughly enjoyed it almost as much as I Am Legend.
I see, I didn't see Stardust because it didn't look particulary interesting, so it's worth watching?

I haven't seen I Am Legend yet, but it looks awesome.
I just now noticed that Gridnhouse was on that poll...as a Burton/Depp fan I'll keep my vote on principle, but I LOVED Grindhouse.
I Am Legend and Sicko deserved consideration to be on that list in my opinion
but my favorite of the year was Juno =]]

Before Imelda gets to it, I shall say:
You did not include POC: At World's End! :matey:
(But we don't care, because we're Ninjas :lookout:)
But, if it's for best movie: Hot Fuzz! That is an awesomely funny movie, and it was in England. :) Makes a nice change from all the comedies being in America, I can so relate. :P

My vote goes to Sweeney Todd, because we did that play and I'm biased. How many of these have I seen? Let's see...
...Nothing. Ah well.
You're missing the Simpsons/Futurama movies. But that's just my inner animation geek speaking.

I'm surprised Transformers didn't wind up on the list...
I'd hardly consider Transformers as a top movie...:P

01-15-2008, 03:02 AM
You have got to be kidding me!
Well..not many Sci-fi-ers here, so I guess it makes sense...
Here's why I can't stand Transformers:
My friend dragged me along to watch it just because he wanted to watch it for the "hot" girl who was in it...

I never saw Transformers. I like to read sci-fi but I'm not much for the movies.

It's a CRAZEEEE movie. I think it was meant more for guys (y'know, big robots, sweet cars, cute chick) but the graphics were to die for! :D
Shaun
01-15-2008, 03:14 AM
I liked Transformers but it wasn't a tremendously fabulous film. It was just entertaining and it had its moments. I enjoyed it a lot, but I found movies like I Am Legend to be if higher caliber as far as films go. That's not to say that Transformers sucked, it's just saying that the kind of film I think deserves recognition via an award should be something more deep and human. Transformers was very external in its character development. But it didn't need internal characterization to be a fantastically fun film. It just needed that to be brilliant :P. Transformers was fun fun fun, but not brilliant. Alternately I loved Children of Men, which is also SF, for the same reasons I loved I Am Legend and would give that movie an award of Transformers...
It's a CRAZEEEE movie. I think it was meant more for guys (y'know, big robots, sweet cars, cute chick) but the graphics were to die for! :D
The robots and cars were awesome no denying that...the girl: ok so not so attractive for a girl:P,

@ Shaun: I see what you mean.
But then again, I am the final-fantasy-pure-action-type, so I guess I AM LEGEND might not appeal to me as much, but then again, I haven't watched it yet...
My vote went to 300! :P
I had to skip the nudity, though...
@ Nyx: I know. Angelina's still cuter...:D
@ Shaun: I see what you mean.
@ Nyx: I know. Angelina's still cuter...:D

Just want to throw out my top five flicks of the year.
In order.
1. Mr Brooks: Great movie. If you haven't seen it, then rent it. It's a mystery, a thriller, and action movie, and a drama. The acting is phenomenal, and that is why I have decided it is the best of film of 07. At least in my opinion.
2. The Mist: Very well done. They stuck to the Stephen King novella and added in a few twists for those of us who actually read the book. And the ending, oh God, what an ending...
3. No Country For Old Men: Holy S&17!! This movie never stopped rolling! It grabs you from the first scene all the way to the end! You'll find yourself tallying the body count of this movie(since there are so many kills), as it just keeps going. I counted 34 kills, but I could be wrong...
4. I Am Legend: It wasn't the novel, but it was brilliant. Will Smith delivered a hell of a performance, and he definitely deserves an award for his efforts. Nearly made me cry with his emotion.
5. We Own The Night: It was great. It started off a little slow, but it got a lot better less than halfway through. I highly recommend it!
Those are my top five.
Honorable mentions (in no order).
300
Planet Terror
Live Free Or Die Hard

I'm with Raf right now too, 300 was one of the greatest, my favorite action film of the year :)
THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! :P (A line to be remembered always)
and for I am Legend fans, it also had it's unforgettable scene... "Fred!!!! Who said you could move!!! If you're real you better say something right now!!!"
EDIT:
Nyx How did Sweeney Todd make the list? :O Have you seen Sweeney Todd? It was an excellent movie, very well made and Johnny Depp, along with Helena Bohnam Carter and Alan Rickman, gave excellent performances. It won the Golden Globe for best Movie (Comedy or Musical... can't believe it beat Juno though :() It was an incredible film, if you haven't seen it, then you should...

Ratatouille was a great film, it was a love letter to critics as well :)
and Gone Baby Gone is one of the best of the year, it's a shame that it came out at a bad time without any marketing at all and no one went to watch it, that movie literally had me thinking for hours after it was over, it was truly powerful...

02-12-2008, 10:06 PM
First off, Johnny Depp is good, but not great. He can't sing, he can't carry a tune, and Sweeney Todd is one of the worst musicals ever made. It's stupid and completely devoid of musical talent.
Second, Stardust is awesome.
Third, I've not seen Juno, but I want to because it looks good and has received rave reviews. The difference here is that I'd be willing to see Juno, but I'd never waste my time seeing Sweeney. I'm not blind to think Sweeney is great just because Depp is in it. Depp isn't the greatest actor ever...in fact he only became popular because of his roll in Pirates...that's it. Before he was a nobody and he has been acting the same since he began doing it. He's not that great, he just happened to do one hell of a memorable roll. A single actor should never be a reason for thinking something is the greatest thing since apple pie.

Michael Clayton was the shit.
And wow.
I feel weird choosing something so different from everybody else. Did anyone even HEAR of that movie? Who else saw Michael Clayton?
jordanisonfire
02-12-2008, 10:11 PM
Shaun, I never said I liked Sweeney 'cos Depp was in it. I'll admit, no, he's not a good singer, his voice was modified, and even then, it didn't sound particularly good, but I liked the film 'cos I thought it was a good musical and it had a good plot, with a dash of good violence. That's my idea of a perfect film, except maybe not the musical part all the time.
GeorgeMichael
02-12-2008, 10:17 PM
Sweeney Todd was awesome, Juno was excellent, Stardust was... ok... at least in my opinion, it was better than nearly all fantasy films recently but nothing too special, and Michael Clayton is a movie that I wanted to see but it got rushed out of my theater :(
same here Oscar, never got to see Michael Clayton. I agree with Shaun entirely on Sweeney, didn't think it was that great at all. Juno was very good, I think Charlie Wilson's War was underrated, No Country for Old Men was great, and Superbad was just hilarious. Those are the 4 I considered, but I ended up going Juno

You know what was my all time favorite movie of the year?
The Mist.
It was fucking brilliant, it stayed true to the book and added in a few twists for those of us who read the story.
I got next years top movie already though.
Here it comes....
RAMBO!!
Jesus H Christ that's a fucking movie folks!

Rambo and Ironman are a big go-see for my friends.
And they're strangely attracted the the Dragonball movie rumored to be in the works! :D
GeorgeMichael
02-13-2008, 01:47 AM
Iron Man... perhaps... that trailer made me laugh at the beginning with the whole photo "please no gangs sign" thing... but I'm still not sure. Rambo... *sigh* I'm sorry but no. It's just that it was too much splat and shooting and guts and blood and 62 year old action stars that it didn't work. It worked with Balboa where they not only recognized Rocky's age and used it as a plot line, but they embraced it as the main story and theme. It worked for that making it one of my favorite of the Rocky movies (not better than the original of course :P) But Rambo just didn't do it for me.
Shaun
02-13-2008, 02:04 AM
Well I liked Transformers, but again, the movie I would have picked isn't up there, and since 300 was good, but lacked a plot, Sweeney Todd was garbage the second I hear Depp sing, and I didn't see Juno, I've chosen Stardust because that is the only film that really made me feel good after seeing it.
Rafael Domination
02-13-2008, 02:07 AM

In response to George's comments on Rambo, let me go over a few things.
If you have seen the first three movies, you'd understand that he went through a lot of pain and sadness.
He was tortured in Nam
He was treated like shit when he came home.
He was in prison for a while.
The woman he loved was killed right before his eyes.
He was left for dead by the government, even after they sent a chopper to go get him (yes they left him in Nam while the chopper was ten feet above his head).
And...he lost all of his friends.
You can see why he was so dark and violent in the last movie now can you?
Stallone wrote the new Rambo with the pain and suffering that he went through in the past movies, it showed a dark, morbid side of one of the most bad ass movie characters ever made.
The blood was great, but maybe its just me and the other twenty two people who have said it was a great flick.
You liked Juno, that says a lot about the movies you like, so I will respect your opinion, but just because Stallone is old, doesn't mean the movie sucked.
He still kicked more ass than any other hero in an action movie.
And you know it!
GeorgeMichael
02-13-2008, 02:35 AM
oh that's true, and I agree with Stallone's quote "Would you rather see Stallone out there once again kicking ass as Rambo, or some new twenty year old filling in his shoes?" Well it was something to that effect and it's true, if someone had to do it then it had to be Stallone and he did a formidable job of it, it's just... people were expecting another Rocky Balboa type movie that would be almost as good as the original Rambo, First Blood, I think the standards were just too high.
Shaun
02-13-2008, 04:17 AM
Okay, well I don't know if he's better than Schwarzenegger, but he is pretty good, and I do want to see the new Rambo. I actually think Stallone is a good actor, even though he gets made fun of. Movies like Rambo and Rocky are examples of his excellent talent. Both are gruesome stories of the human condition. I haven't seen all of the Rambo's, but I did see the one where he was treated like crap when he returned from Nam...I don't blame him for going apeshit...I would too. His movies took on an issue that very few people were willing to take on. Very few directors/actors have set out to tell the story of the poor soldiers who returned home from Nam only to be spit on by the country they thought they were defending. We have to face that fact that the country treated them like shit and it's unacceptable. Doesn't matter if the conflict/battle/war/whatever is right or not, you never treat your soldiers like crap, because they didn't ask to be shipped out to get shot at or die...they volunteered their lives for it...
Yeah, sorry...I just am really defensive of our soldiers...I love them all very much...
Zombified
02-13-2008, 05:08 AM
Well I don't think anyone expected "Rambo" to be better than "First Blood". I don't think he was even trying to do that.
I think he just wanted to show how Rambo changed from all the bad shit that happened to him. I mean, Jesus, he ripped a guys throat out...
In the other movies, he wouldn't do that.
Like I said, I feel it was made to show how he had changed over time and how brutal he became.

02-13-2008, 08:11 AM
Is the Dragonball movie going to be animated, or real life? If it's the former, I'm not seeing it, if it's the latter, I think they'll have a hard time doing the CGI.

In my ultimate wisdom (and cos I saw Sweeney Todd yesterday) I can say that it wasn't that bad, but no way better than Stardust. For a start it did nothing new with the old story which is a shame. I thought the acting was good--Bonham Carter and that young boy totally stole the show. Depp was alright, but the fact that he sounded like Jack Sparrow was totally distracting--he should have picked a different accent for the part.
Depp was famous before Pirates, Shauny. Long before. Edward Scissorhands? That dead puppet thing ... I dunno what it's called. He's been around forever doing oddball parts, it's just that Sparrow is the one that appeals to the largest audience.
The difference here is that I'd be willing to see Juno, but I'd never waste my time seeing Sweeney.
I gather that means you haven't actually seen it? If so: shut up.
Shaun
02-15-2008, 03:23 PM
He didn't become famous from Edward Scissorshands. That film was actually a bomb. He became famous because of Pirates. Before he was just an OK actor. He didn't get much attention at all. He had some good roles, but nothing amazing. Before Pirates people weren't running around screaming his name. Now they are. And because of that popularity people are blind to the fact that he really isn't that great.
Imelda
02-15-2008, 03:28 PM
Well my sister (and you know how stupid she is) had been running around screaming his name for a long time before Pirates. Even *I* knew who he was, because I thought he'd be cool playing a pirate. What about Sleepy Hollow? That didn't bomb, and he was playing a very different character in that.
jordanisonfire
02-15-2008, 05:38 PM
I knew Depp acted in a film before Pirates, but not Edward Scissorhands. It was where he was some eccentric guy (well, he's pretty much an eccentric guy in all his films) and he was trying to woo a girl who was mentally challenged. Can't remember it's name... anyway, I don't Depp is a brilliant actor, he's not my favourite, but it's funny how he portrays eccentricities.

Excuse me Shaun, I was totally running around screaming his name before Pirates. Normally I'd launch into a tirade about how great he is and how wrong you are, but I just remembered you have the power to ban me so I'll just be quiet now.
GeorgeMichael
02-15-2008, 08:26 PM
Johnny Depp has been one of my favorite actors since... around Edward Scissorhands which I loved and which was one of his first big movies next to cry baby... ... I also like Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, I loved Chocolat... I wonder if Imelda has seen that, just judging by the title :P and alot of his titles since then. He is a great actor and has tried many different roles, sometimes he fails (The Astronaunts wife... which was just a bad movie altogether) but mostly he is great, he is one of the actors of this century that can actually rely on his talents and not looks. (Apparently he has that too so I guess he's got both things going for him)
Shaun
02-15-2008, 08:32 PM
I don't deny that Depp is a good actor, BUT he is, by and large, remembered and made famous by Pirates. There weren't any magazines before Pirates running around screaming his name. Teenie boppers latched on to him because he created possibly one of the most memorable characters EVER. Darth Vader is one of the few characters to out do Jack Sparrow...I'm sorry, CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow. I knew of Depp before too. Most don't know this, but he had a cameo in the movie Platoon (he was on screen for about 6 seconds).
Depp is good, sometimes, but he's not the greatest actor EVER. That is reserved to people with significantly more talent. What makes Depp get so much credit is that he tends to work with Burton on a lot of things and he happens to fit into Burton's dark vision very easily. Again, though, his prior career has only gained momentum thanks to Pirates. Few people were giving him the critical attention he has now.
Imelda
02-15-2008, 09:18 PM
Only because he was doing odd films. Chocolat did pretty well didn't it? I haven't seen it yet, my sister has it on video and I don't have a video machine. :glare:
Urm, off the subject of chocolate ... Depp. He's not the greatest actor ever, but he's pretty versatile (Jack Sparrow vs Edward Scissorhands vs ... the dude off Sleepy Hollow? Pretty varied) and brings an edge to most parts he plays. People didn't give him the critical attention because he'd never been in some huge blockbuster with a part that was just plain weird. Sparrow has to be one of the most memorable characters ever, and not just because Depp played him.
AWritersFantasy

You forgot The Golden Compass and Beowulf! Not that I enjoyed Beowulf at all. >.> 'Cause I didn't. I thought it was boring and confusing.
You also forgot Harry Potter and Spider-Man (...I think a Spider-Man movie came out? I don't even remember). Oh, and Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
Out of those choices, though, I would have to choose Stardust...because that's the only one I've seen of that list, and I absolutely loved it.
Of course, I'm listing those movies without having read the previous pages of the thread, so...

It's called "Benny and Joon" (I've never seen it but I'm sure I will eventually)
I don't care how much you love Johnny Depp, Sweeney was not the best movie of the year, it just wasn't
Shaun
02-16-2008, 01:20 AM
It's Depp fanaticism, Alex. That's why it has 4 votes. If they wanted to vote for good movies, Sweeney wouldn't have any votes :P. I voted for Stardust because of the films I have seen up there it was my favorite. There are bound to be a lot of films up there more worth winning.
But since Stardust is the best choice, VOTE FOR STARDUST!
ALOT of movies on that list were better than sweeney
Juno
Michael Clayton
American Gangster
No Country For Old Men
Charlie Wilson's War
Superbad
Knocked Up
Grindhouse
were all better than Sweeney from the movies I did see
Shaun
02-16-2008, 02:36 AM
Superbad and Knocked Up were both really good, though not award worthy I don't think, but funny as hell. I generally have a problem giving awards to comedies unless they really tackle issues of great importance...

I don't care how much you love Johnny Depp, Sweeney was not the best movie of the year, it just wasn't
It's De pp fanaticism, Alex.
When will you two get it into your skulls that I DID NOT VOTE FOR SWEENEY BECAUSE IT HAD DEPP IN IT?! Christ sakes, I don't give a damn he was in it, I loved the plot. I didn't even know he was in it before I watcheded it, and I suddenly reaslised when I recognised his accent from Pirates.

Still true, though. Welcome to your death, Shadow!
