View Full Version : Bookstore Care Policies?

I wrote a blog post about this but I'm going to forward this discussion to you.
Has anyone else experienced a problem with bookstores that carry new books not taking care of their items? I was at a Borders not long ago and there were a few books that I really wanted that were in crappy condition and they were the only copies. It was somewhat upsetting because I don't like paying full price for books that are in used condition...
Anyone else?
No I can't say I have because I get most of my books through my English teachers who are all collectors ((yes I know I'm wierd but theres something about reading a first edition hemingway that makes you feel special))
and when I do go its usually for manga or films, but when I do look around the book sections for something that would interest me, spur of the moment. I don't seem to notice, maybe I'm not looking hard enough?
I haven't actually seen that Shaun. I only shop for books in Chapters/Indigo and they always lower the price when books are in bad condition.

You sort of have to pull the books out, Alex. A lot of the books I saw at Borders looked great from the spine, but when you pulled them out the covers or pages were all mangled. It's depressing :(.
That's weird. I've never seen anything like that. Maybe a book which looks like it was shoved into the shelf, but nothing that would make me not want to buy one.

I've never seen that either and I typically go to either Borders or Barnes & Noble. Have you seen this often? Maybe one of the employees or a customer at that one store mishandled those particular books when he or she tried to cram it onto the shelf.

Well, it's not a super common thing. Most of the books are fine, it's just seems to happen when they have only one copy of a book I want and that copy is beat up :(. The store is loaded with books and I haven't looked at them all. Usually I find stuff I want and it's in okay condition, but this last journey sucked. There were at least three books with only one copy left and all the copies were just beat up. I just can't bring myself to pay full price for a copy that is in very used condition :(.

I've never seen anything in bad condition at the bookstore, and I mostly frequent Barnes & Noble and Borders. It would be upsetting to pay for a book in less than prime condition at full price, but I would probably buy it anyway if it were a book I really wanted to read.
Now the books on my bookshelf -- that's a whole 'nother story.
