Some of you might have noticed that Spacepirate and Tsuki have special user titles. Both of them are our official Crit Sheriffs. What is a Crit Sheriff?
A Crit Sheriff is a special position here on YWO. They are essentially people whose job it is to monitor the lit forums. While they do not have the power to delete your posts (yet), they do have the full authority of the Mods and Admins of YWO to point out to people what they are doing wrong and how they can improve (emphasis on "improve"). They're duties include:
--Send visitor messages, PMs, and the like to members who need help with their critiquing. This might include letting them know about the rules, point them to our various guides, and even point them to good examples, and so on.
--Report posts which violate the rules so that they can be deleted by any mod who is online or gets online next
--Perform other duties related to critiquing. This includes running workshops, among other things.
Basically, Crit Sheriff's are like section-specific mods. If a Crit Sheriff says something to you, don't take it with a grain of salt. They're there to help you get better so you can be a productive member of this site. The better you are at critiquing, the better you'll be as a writer and the more critiques you'll get in return.
Any questions?

I'd just like to add a tiny little thing.
If we send you a *friendly* VM/PM, we would like to hear back from you, sometime, in the future to know that you're interested in improving so we can help/send more stuff. So don't ignore us and keep posting the same crits. Even a simple "I understand" would be fine. We don't bite.
Or you'll make us sad... :(

How is it decided when a user is worthy of this title? Are there elections?

Right now they are picked by Admins. Future decisions will ask for mod input. No elections right now.
