Hi everyone.:) I was thinking about something one day in my Web Page Design Class. We were designing a web page about our favorite music. Now, people ask others what their favorite songs are, or who's your favorite song artist, but sometimes the people who have to answer the question don't know why they like the song. Some people just use music for the rthym, but others actually listen to the words and are able to tell what the song means to them or why they like it.
Also, I'd like to discuss how music effects our ethnicity or race, but first, name some of your favorite songs and tell us what that song means to you and why you like it. It would also help to include a few lines of lyrics and the artist.

Door of Destiny, (Transformers Score...)
I love it for it's complex melody, high-action feel and powerful emotion...
Yes...I'm weird. You guys already know that! :D
Well this is going to be long but here goes
my favorite song of all time has to be
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
This song I just always thought was so beautiful. Robert Plant's voice fits perfectly with the lyrics, and Jimmy's composition is just outstanding. This song, at least in me, instills a feeling of serenity that I just can't find anywhere else. The two main criticisms of this song, despite its popularity, is that when played backwards it can be assumed that there are "satanic" messages, but I believe its a mere coincidence and people hear what they want to hear. The other criticism is that its over-played. While I sound ((and probably am)) very hypocritical for saying this ((becauseI beleive in what I'm defending)) a song shouldn't be punished for being popular, at least not one of this caliber. The song, to me, seems to be about a woman who has inexplicably accumulated in some way a large sum of money, and her attempts to use her worldly goods as ways to enter heaven. Thats just me of course, but I just love the way this song defines the role of itself as "ballad" while garnering attention from people ((like me)) who mock harder rock band's ballads. All I can say is bravo to Led Zeppelin for writing, in my eyes, the greatest song of all-time. The first stanza is below.
Theres a lady whos sure
All that glitters is gold
And shes buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and shes buying a stairway to heaven.
After I come up with a few more idea for which songs are really my favorite I'll have to look around a bit more, but for now this is all. Thanks for making this thread by the way, I love my music <3 lol. So you get a green checkmark zaph, yay!!

My choice of favorite song always seems to be changing, but one of my perennial favorites is "Escape" by Alice Cooper. A lot of the stuff I listen to tends to be a little more downbeat and moody, and this song helps to work against that and bring me back up. I can never feel bad when I listen to it, I guess it's kind of inspirational. A lot of so-called inspirational songs I find to be hopelessly overwrought and cheesy but this one has this raw, spunky sound that I absolutely love.
Some lyrics:
"Don't get me wrong, don't get me right
I'm not like you are
When I get home from work at night
I'm blacker and bluer
So I escape
I get out when I can
Escape
Anytime I can
Let's all escape
I'm crying in my beer
Escape
Just get me out of here"

It's My Life by Bon Jovi (acoustic or regular version). Listen to the lyrics, listen to the melody. It's gorgeous and the lyrics really have meaning despite them being a 'hair band'.
"It's my life, it's now or never,
I don't want to live forever.
I just wanna live while I'm alive.
It's my life."
Brilliant and simple at the same time. The interesting thing about the song is that the two versions that are out there that Bon Jovi sang offer entirely different feelings for the song. The acoustic version is slower and almost feels melancholy, as if Bon Jovi is dying and he's singing about how he just wants to live each day to the fullest. The rock version, the original version actually, is more upbeat and gives the feeling of someone who is just living life and perhaps is being ridiculed for it. After all, if you live life on the fast lane, people are going to eventually tell you 'one day you're going to get killed' and if your response is 'well I don't want to live forever, but I do want to live while I'm here, and this is living', well there's no much someone can say to that :P.
I just love the song. There are a lot of other songs I love too, but I think some of my musical tastes might not be what others are interested in :P

I've recently discovered a new band to me. Well, not new, I knew about them for a while, but I've just started listening properly now. Basically, Tool is my favourite band at the moment. The music is really inspiring, seeing as the band is art rock, and the singer isn't included all that much, the songs are mostly devoted to the music, but when he is included, he uses the correct kind of voice for the songs. Their music makes me feel like I'm filling a sort of void.
But, if I'm not feeling up to something soft and slow, I'll go for Slipknot. Their music is basically the most adrenaline-pumping thing I've heard, and thus they fuel my mind with wanting to just get up and smash the place apart. And then, there's all the other bands like Bullet For My Valentine, Paramore etc. that are also pretty good.
For Slipknot, I think its lost in the "fakeness" the fact that Corey Taylor has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard in any genre of music. That being said, he knows he could make money in a different genre, yet he stays with what he loves and its honorable to me. There are also certain songs I like for the band ((Liberate, My Plague, Duality)), but more than anything I respect them for what they do

Yeesh, does anyone else like orchestras besides me?
*nope sorry Raffy:P*
Anyways...I don't really have favorite, or maybe I have too many. Everyonce in a while my favorites change. Jordan already mentioned paramore, whose songs are all very inspirational. So I'll say my favorite song at this very moment is Nothing Special by Illscarlet. They're not a band that I really love but this song is very "tapping into emotions"!Or maybe I like it because I can relate to it.
Here's the begining of the lyrics:
"I'm sick and tired of everybody
Thinkin they know what's best for me and
Maybe god wanted me to be
Nothing special.
I'm past the point of breakin and I'm
Not sure if I'm a gonna make it
I'll keep this gift from breakin
as long as you BELIEVE."

I like orchestrated music just fine Raff, but I can't think of any individual songs that would fit into this thread :S.

Actaully, my cousin and I always listen to orchastrae while we tell or stories. One of my favorite Orchastraes is the one from Kingdom Hearts. I also like Beethoven's Synphonies as well. That's why Classical is in my top five for favorite music.
Looks like we have something else in common,Raf. I think that's number 14.
I like orchestra music since I play piano...it's just not one of my favorites.

You play piano? I'm going to get piano lessons very soon, then I will play my heart away!
Yep, I've only been playing for 2-3 years though. It's actually really fun, more fun than I thought it'd be:rolleyes:
I burned out after 4 years of it, it just wasn't my instrument.
I was interested in learning how to play bass for the longest time but never got a hang of it so now I just sing =] ((not all that well, but... better than some))
I need to finish grade.5 piano before I can start playing electric guitar, so I am looking forward to it.
that should be fun
but bass is still better. Flea from RHCP all the way!!! W000T
ok now that I'm done with that, when you can start playing electric guitar tell me the first few songs you learn to play. I've had so many people tell me Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple and if thats it again... I will loose all hope in humanity. Not becuase its a bad song, but everyone learns it first. Its one of those things that is completley insignificant that just gets on my nerves. Yes I am wierd like that, I hope you can deal with it lol =]]]

I personally really love classical. Some of it is simply awesome work and it sometimes helps me get into the writing mood. My top two forms of music are orchestrated works (classical, soundtracks, etc.) and trance, with rock pulling in a close third. I listen to a wide range of music though.
Exact opposite of me
Rock all the way with some Jazz and Techno and thats it booya =]
