Are there any books that you used to like, but haven't liked since becoming a writer? I don't mean books you outgrew, but ones where you've found a lot of problems with since you've learned more about the craft.

For example, I've started to not like the Redwall series as much as I used to. The books used to be a lot of fun to read, but I don't like the fact that all hares talk and act the same, and for each character there seems to be a identical character in species and personality from another book. Also the fact that whenever someone from a "bad" species starts to turn good, that character is killed off (it's been done twice - every time). So, yeah, I just don't like that.

The only books I wouldn't enjoy reading now are the ones I have outgrown. So, I guess I like all books, as long as they are within my age group, Harry Potter being the biggest child book I will read (although Harry Potter isn't particularly childish).

Pendragon. I mean, the series were interesting at first, and then they wore on, and on, and on, and on...

I personally always hated the redwall series. Maybe its because I'm not much of a fantasy reader, but it always glared at me how shallow some of the characters were.

I think books that revolve around talking animals should be reserved for kids :D

Imelda and Andy will jump for joy, but I'm starting to get annoyed with Paolini and his Inheritance series. My reasons have little to do with the stories but more to do with Paolini who is starting to get on my nerves. How exactly do you spend over a year writing the last book in a trilogy and not realize that 'oh hey, yeah...umm my outline doesn't work and I need to write another book to finish the story'. Yeah, doesn't happen. The only way it happens is if you do that with the first book and realize halfway through that you've got too much story to tie up in one book...that's what happened to me.

Oh and I'm losing interest in Harry Potter. I think all my answers to this thread are going to be books that I loved that ended up losing their flare when the authors proved to be douchbags. Rowling has almost entirely killed the series for me. I was really looking forward to that companion dictionary/encyclopedia gizmo for the HP series, but now I won't buy it because her recent actions have just made me not want to pay for anything she writes again. Thankfully I only own one HP book and I might sell that...

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

He's so much more attractive now. :p

For me, it's HP and His Dark Materials. Both because the authors are arrogant sell-outs.

If I ever sell out, please send me hate mail and get me to change my mind. :D

I'll admit I'm going off the Inheritance Cycle. Not just because Paolini absolutely pisses me off, but because his books are becoming boring now and I'm starting to see the flaws clearer now. I will read his next two books, but only because I want to see if that long wait was worth it and if my theories on what's going to happen next are true.

I only dislike books that I've outgrown...like the warrior series...I don't know why I ever liked those books:O

But I can't think of any books that I started to dislike when I learned more about writing...

Best 3 posts in a row...ever! Minus that attractiveness bit. I've found some issues with the Harry Potter series since I got into writing, but not enough to stop liking it.

Yea, so have I. But it will always be one of those books that I can't stop liking.

Do non-novels count as well?
