So it seems... *Takes a deep breath*

NOW WILL SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT WE'RE DISCUSSING!!!!!!!!

Alex
01-03-2008, 03:22 AM
Well if no ones going to start a discussion how about I take action hooah!

Has anyone heard of the rap group Public Enemy. They were a group in the late 80's and early 90's ((the group Flava' Flav' was/is in)). They rapped almost entirely about protest and politics, and opposite of the crap on rap stations now I thought this was listenable to. Don't get me wrong, rap has never been, and never will be my style, but because this music came with a message I found myself being able to be attached to it. They always put on a great show, and the odd quirks they'd do will always have me at least semi-interested as a listener. I first learned about them from a compolation they did with Anthrax entitled Bring the Noise, I just love the way that song works and everything.

I guess we're I'm getting with all of this is, has anyone heard their music or at least heard of the group itself. If not, the broader question is, do you support what new rap music stands for. I've always been strongly, very very very strongly against the new stuff and everything it stands for, and I just wanted to see everyone elses opinions.

Zaphkiel
01-03-2008, 03:31 AM
Well, I use to be a big fan of rap when I was kid, but now rap doesn't have the message that it use to. Now, all rap talks about is getting some girl in the bed or how this guy shot that guy. Don't get me wrong, I support my African-American people in every way I can, but most music today doesn't have a message, and that goes for Rock as well. I like songs that actually tell me something, so if the Public Enemy gives me a good story or message, then I gladly support them.^_^

Nyx
01-03-2008, 03:35 AM
I haven't heard of them but they sound interesting.

As for rap well it doesn't really have a message and as zaphy said, it is basically about the "getting girl in bed" shit and well that's just not what I like to listen to.They are some rare songs that have interesting messages behind them, I for one love listening to When I'm Gone-Eminem and Lose Yourself. But rap is the same as any other kind of music, if it doesn't have an important message behind it then I'm not going to listen to it.

Zaphkiel
01-03-2008, 03:37 AM
Exactly, that's how I feel.^_^

Alex
01-03-2008, 03:50 AM
thats how I feel as well. I'll listen to some music I don't feel has a meaning because of the instrumentals ((take the band Rush for instance)) but if it doesn't have one or both of those aspects ((rap always lacks instrumentals of course)) then I won't listen to it.

There was a discussion I had with a few of the popular girls at my school who overheard one of my friends calling one of them "hot". While I do understand how this is derogatory and I don't personally do it anymore since I've matured a little more than I was a few years ago. They confronted me and told me "hey we heard Matt Smith ((yes that is his real name and I'm not making up a generic name for the purpose of this story)) calling us hot. Don't you think thats derogatory?"

I just kind of sat there and laughed to myself, "but isn't listening to soulja boy just as, if not more derogatory to women." Two of them started walking away but one of them responded

"No, because Soulja boy sounds good."

I just couldn't hold it in I started laughing my ass off. How can we as a nation be so hypocritical even when it comes to the vilest of things. Maybe its a testament to the music industry, or maybe its a wider testament on our entire culture, but either way isn't it just a little pathetic.

Because rap "sounds good" to the general public the not-so-underlying messages in the music become null? This just caught my attention in such a negative way, but it was eye-opening. I'd much rather listen to ANY style of rock than watch people dancing to the lyrics "superman that hoe". Come on now people are we really this disgusting?

I have nothing against your culture either Zaph and I hope its not coming off as that in my criticisms, as there are many different african-american artists I respect beyond beleif ((hell the first quote in my sig was said by quite possibly the most influential man in history)) ,but the modern renditions of this style of music are just a joke to me.

Nyx
01-03-2008, 03:53 AM
As I agree with all that, Alex. Except I have to point something out: I do listen to songs like Soulja Boy, etc when I'm hyper, and dancing, and etc.:D Because as much as it is awful and obscene, songs like that are the only ones that have a good dancing beat to my ear:P

Alex
01-03-2008, 03:56 AM
Like I said, its your opinion and I'm not here to change it and if I respect you as a person I have to respect your music, but whenever I'm really hyper and need to dance I have my techno and techno-mix songs. God I love the juniors and there "directory" of 30,000+ techno songs =]

Personally, as much as I love rock and the feeling I get listening to it. I would give up on music altogether for the rest of my life to know that rap is dead. Its 2008 and we're and I already can't imagine anything more vile being acceptable, but along with the times it shows that it will be and that, in my eyes will be a travesty. And it doesn't change the fact that Soulja Boy IS derogatory. I will die before I see an argument that is factual that states more than 95% of new rap is not derogatory.

Hell the only dancing you need IMO is headbaning and moshing jeez go with the times haha =]]]]]

Zaphkiel
01-03-2008, 04:00 AM
Don't worry Alex, I didn't get the impression that you were rying to insult my culture or anything. BTW, I can do that Soulja boy dance pretty well, too!^_^

Alex
01-03-2008, 04:01 AM
oh my god I don't even want to know ><

EDIT: Its not even much of a dance, its just hopscotch set to rap music in the background

now watch me yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!..... away to another thread for now!

Zaphkiel
01-03-2008, 04:02 AM
Hahaha!!!

Nyx
01-03-2008, 04:04 AM
I can do the dance good too Zaphy:P You think we could do it coordinated?

Alex, I see what you're saying. But where is music, with good catchy beats that has a good meaning to it? Find it please and I will throw soulja boy out the window.

Zaphkiel
01-03-2008, 04:07 AM
I'm sure we could pull off a coordinated version!^_^

Alex
01-03-2008, 04:15 AM
well it has good catchy beats with no lyrics to it

how about Pretty Rave Girl by I Am X-Ray

how about quite possibly the best rhythmic song of all time in my opinion in Artificial Intelligence by Autechre

there are songs out there if you look hard enough. How about ALMOST ANYTHING off the DDR games. Those songs are awesome for dancing even if your no good at DDR. Boom Boom Dollar, almost ALL Captain Jack Songs. Freckles ((the old theme song for Rurouni Kenshin btw))

so there are songs everywhere that are not derogatory, but I will admit its hard to find unless you have alternate means of finding them, but isn't that the problem?

And the dance, I'm telling you sexuality/hopscotch/rap = soulja boy!!! I did a math problem before school starts again yay! Not trying to change people just getting my opinions out you know?

Nyx
01-03-2008, 04:26 AM
DDR isn't really my idea of fun music. Yes there's no lyrics to soulja boy, it's sexist and wrong but the hard beat makes me want to move my feet.

Zaphkiel
01-03-2008, 04:27 AM
Yeah, SOulja boy is disrespectful

ANyway, I got to go, but maybe I'll see al of you tomorrow, bye!

Alex
01-03-2008, 04:30 AM
its upbeat isn't it? w/e though

if you want to listen to a GREAT version of Soulja Boy check this out. Even I recommend this, this is just amazing beyong belief hahahah!! Check it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNK2L8-V5dQ

God I love this guy =]]] not in that way but you get it.

Ok then Zaph I'll see you tommorow see ya =]

Nyx
01-03-2008, 04:36 AM
It's upbeat, it's not fun though. By the way, I detest the word whatever.

Ahaha, that vid. is so funny. I love how they say " I'm cockin on your big butt".And the guy who's supposed to be the "hater"

:P

Alex
01-03-2008, 04:48 AM
Now there is my type of music, god thats awesome. His version of Baby Got Back is pretty funny to

I love the high pitched yuuU!

Nyx
01-03-2008, 05:03 AM
Yep it's very funny. Now, what shall we discuss next?

Alex
01-03-2008, 05:05 AM
uhm.... well I started the last one so I don't feel heavily abliged to start another one right now lol

you come up with one jeez I feel so pressured ><

Nyx
01-03-2008, 05:11 AM
Like, O.M.G! Let's discuss Britney's new hairstyle!XD! I am just kidding, I don't know what came over me there:P

OK, so here's something we could discuss: how do you define a good band?

Alex
01-03-2008, 05:16 AM
A good band is made by a few things in no particular order

A) Depth - In terms of album. If each album they release only has 1 good song that carries the album it takes away form the band. Thats why I respect bands like System Of A Down, and Linkin Park who release tons of popular songs from each of their albums

B) Talent - The truth is that no matter how much heart you have if you aren't good at playing instrumentally you aren't getting through the rock underground of today.

C) Lyrics - Very few bands get by with completley illogical lyrics, depending on your genre the importance of this varies, will be able to succeed at the highest level

D) Live Performance - It doesn't matter much to me, but I know to alot of people what can make or break a band for them is how they perform live. If they perform better they're a better band, nough' said.

E) Off-Stage Performance - I think out of all of these this is the least important, but it does carry some weight, at least in my eyes, because if you know that one of the band members has problems with alcohol or drugs it makes it more depressing to listen to them. Thats why I drifted away from Pantera, a great thrash band, but with all the problems they'd gone through it just gets hard for me to listen to them and stay emotionally level.

Those are the biggest aspects to making a good band in my opinion

Nyx
01-03-2008, 05:24 AM
I basically agree but I'd like to add a few:

Creativity-If a band isn't unique and just sounds like every other band, it's not worth listening to.

Catchy/attarcting-if a band doesn't have one catchy song that makes you want to listen a million more times, they won't be popular, and catchy songs (although they usually aren't deep) are great for attracting new listeners, almost necessary.

Alex
01-03-2008, 05:30 AM
Catchy is more of a new wave thing but it is right and I agree on the creativity thing

I mean you can't expect every band to be different. Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Alice Cooper were all Seatle Grunge Bands yet they all were popular, and while they together invented a new sound, seperatley they never sounded that different from each other.

Same with bands like AFI and MCR now, they sound alike in some of the songs I've heard ((not a huge fan of either so I wouldn't know but I'm trying to use a more modern example)) yet they're both popular.

There are very few bands that I can think of on the spot that don't have a "catchy" song to make them uber-succesful and the first band I think of is System Of A Down. You can point to B.Y.O.B but that song wasn't very catchy as much as it was less like them then any of their other songs.

Linkin Park is the same way. Usually bands with deeper albums lack the one "catchy" song to bring people in ((although in Linkin Park's case In The End was that song, but that was for Hybrid Theory back in 2002))

Nyx
01-03-2008, 05:32 AM
AFI and MCR don't have any similar songs...:O

Alex
01-03-2008, 05:36 AM
thats what I've heard from people who listen to them ((that they have a similar sound))... well then lets throw out that example and throw in something else

maybe some of The Fray with some of Blue October or Three Days Grace with The All American Rejects

I haven't listened to full albums from any of these bands, but I know songs like Liar, Liar sounds like it could be an AAR song with a different singer

Hate Me sounds like something The Fray could write

just trying to think off the top of my head here, but that being said I would like to reflect on the original point that while innovation is good and it adds to a band's popularity in most cases I don't beleive its completley necessary

Nyx
01-03-2008, 05:44 AM
I think it'd completely necessary, because if two bands have the same sound, a listener will often choose the better one and throw the other aside.

Now as for your examples: Blue october and the fray...hm...I can't give an established opinion on that because I've barely heard anything from the fray.

However AAR and Three Days Grace are completely different. Three Days Grace has grunge/rock music while AAR's music is mostly pop and slow downed rock.

Alex
01-03-2008, 05:48 AM
compare Liar Liar, 3DaysGrace's arguably most popular song and compare it to Dirty Little Secret

its a bit more lyrical I'll give it that but its not much different in term of feel. Yes 3DG is a little faster and rock based while AAR sometimes regress to pop but I think AAR just sounds like ballad versions of songs 3DG could write

well then how about Pantera/Metallica/Anthrax/Slayer the 4 bands that started the thrash metal generation in the late 80's/early 90's

they all sound very similar ((with the exception of Slayer having some different stuff and Metallica during thier quote unquote sellout years at the end of their career))

Nyx
01-03-2008, 05:52 AM
What's liar.liar? It can't be a popular song because a) there's no youtube vid for it and b) no google-able lyrics c) I've never heard of and I own quite a few three days grace albums:P

Those bands were similar, but they were all unique for their time. My argument only applies to modern bands.

Alex
01-03-2008, 05:56 AM
Oh whoops I'm retarded Liar Liar is a Taking Back Sunday song

wow I'm stupid

Three Days Grace is COMPLETLEY different with Pain and Animal I Have Become

yep I'm stupid rub it in lol

Nyx
01-03-2008, 06:00 AM
Yay! -rubs it in-

Alex
01-03-2008, 06:07 AM
That didn't feel good. It felt like pouring tabasco sauce over an open wound

thank you for that though now I'm going to cry

--cries--

Nyx
01-03-2008, 06:15 AM
Hey, I never said I was nice:D

Anyways back to discussing music. It's your turn to start a discussion:)

Alex
01-03-2008, 06:20 AM
--wipes tears away from his eyes--

Lets do something simple because obviously my creative juices aren't flowing. What is your favorite band? and why?

jordanisonfire
01-03-2008, 09:30 AM
Tool, because they play art rock, which is a new inspiration for me and they sound cool, too. If you've never heard their music, search Tool on YouTube, it's worth a listen.

Alex
01-03-2008, 09:47 AM
Tool is pretty good, I like their style and they really remind me of The Doors of old. Of course they are a harder band, but that is understandable becuase that is just the new style. They are similar in the way both bands had a unique sound while clinging to a fairly common genre. The singers voices' also remind me of each other, but both bands were always willing to try new things within their own confines which I liked. Schism by Tool is alot like Whiskey Bar by The Doors to me. They sound, almost completley different, but to me they are both different from a similar genre in a similar way and it is just a testament to how wonderful parity in music is I guess.

Tool is pretty good though and its a good choice as a favorite band IMO ((you get my stamp of approval lol)) =]]]

My favorite has got to be System Of A Down. Don't know how people can criticize this band. They play from so many styles, they have a rap-rock side with Shame On A N!$&@ ((cover for the Wu-Tang Clan)) they show a softer side with a song like Aerials and Spiders ((both sucessful singles for them in their own right)). They show respect to the old greats with a song like ATWA which is a testament to Serj's idol growing up, but for some reason I can't remember the name right now. They have heavy songs like Attack ((opening track on Mezmerize, and I will always beleive it was the best decision they ever made to include this track on this album and not on a seperate EP)). Almost each and every one of their songs has a profound political and sociological meaning, and to me they are one of the most interesting bands to study out there.

No one has ever been able to classify their sound so they are thrown in the Nu Metal sound ((which I can't lie, seems to fit them)). Their albums are all just so deep with so many good songs, and I love how they don't rely on 1 song for all their fame. If you have time check out some of their songs and if you like how it sounds check out the lyrics because to me they are some of the most interesting pieces of art I've ever laid eyes on.

To me their bests songs are ((Boom, Attack, ATWA, Spiders, Deer Dance, Violent Pornography, Aerials, Radio/Video, Prison Song, Suite-Pee, Chic N' Stu-Ind, Kill Rock N' Roll, Chop Suey, Forest, Vicinity Of Obscenity, I-E-A-I-A-I-O, D Devil, Psycho, Old School Hollywood, Darts, Cubert, Sugar, and last but not least Needles)) You ower it to yourself to check out at least 1 or two of these songs.

Note how only Chop Suey and Aerials are on here from their popular songs. If you've heard System you've probably heard them with B.Y.O.B / Toxicity / Lonely Day / Hypnotize / Chopy Suey / and Aerials ((these being their most popular songs)) but it takes a truly talented band for its followers to beleive that the best songs are those sadly not getting the airtime they deserve

Wow well theres my system rant lol. Also if you like System check out Serj Tankian's ((the lead singer of System)) new album called Elect The Dead. ((Honking Antelope, Charades, Empty Walls, Unthinking Majority, and Saving Us shine out on that album if you're going to check it out)).

Wow ok thanks for listening to all that and help me with your wishes that System gets back together before I go off the college and play a show down here because that would be AWESOME!

jordanisonfire
01-03-2008, 09:53 AM
Are System of a Down Caucasian, because I've heard somewhere that they're foreign?

Alex
01-03-2008, 09:55 AM
they're all white ((I'm pretty sure everyone but Shavo was born in America but don't quote me on that)) but they are all of fairly close Armenian descent. They started getting into music to speak out and raise awareness of the Armenian genocide in the early 1900's, but its not a foreign band by any means.

speaking of foriegn bands lol I shouldn't lol

jordanisonfire
01-03-2008, 09:57 AM
Why shouldn't you talk about foreign bands? :D

Alex
01-03-2008, 09:59 AM
well I was going to get into a long rant about Ramnstein and they're on-stage antics but that would be obscene and I havent looked at it enough to make a solid rant about it quite yet.

Knowing how random we get this thread should get there soon enough though so no worries shadow =]]]

jordanisonfire
01-03-2008, 10:01 AM
Sure will. :D

Nyx
01-03-2008, 09:58 PM
I don't really have favorite bands...except if I did Paramore, Billy Talent and My chemical Romance would be in the battle for number one.

I like paramore simply because they're so unique! The lead singer has such a nice, strong voice, it's very inspriring. And their lyrics definately have alot of great messages behind them -points to siggy-

My Chemical Romance and Billy Talent are a bit similar. I used to enjoy MCR far more than I do now, and I think The Black Parade was rather disapointing.

jordanisonfire
01-03-2008, 10:00 PM
Hayley Williams was voted the 2nd sexiest voice on Kerrang!, you know? :D

Nyx
01-03-2008, 10:41 PM
Ehehe.

Her voice is so damn unique..I love Paramore. I wish they would have a concert in Bc..:D

jordanisonfire
01-03-2008, 10:50 PM
Is one of their guitarists gay?

Nyx
01-03-2008, 11:03 PM
I don't know...

Alex
01-04-2008, 04:53 AM
You have to love a band that has a lead singer that writes an entire poem about how flags are as useful as toilet paper ((serj tankian is f-ing awesome)) I <3 that poem lol. If it wasn't so long I would put it in my sig =]]]

Nyx
01-09-2008, 12:28 AM
Ok we need to start a new discussion here...hm...OK who do you think is a fairly new band, who in't well-known or that popular yet that shows good promise of becoming a great/good band?

Alex
01-09-2008, 01:51 AM
Metrostation

Trace Cyrus ((Hannah Montana's brother)) is in it. They are a really upbeat electronica band that has it right.

If you want to check em' out go to www.myspace.com/metrostation, my favorite songs are Oh Kelsey and California personally, but I think these guys could at least become good.

Nyx
01-09-2008, 02:38 AM
Hm..I listened to a couple of their songs right now, well first of all their image kinda turned me away:P

Their songs don't really interest me, they sort of sound like fall out boy.

Alex
01-09-2008, 03:06 AM
ahhhh their image is awesome. The only one that doesnt look good is Trace but theres an asian dude I mean come on.

AHhh well everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I'll personally be sitting back and listening to my Led Zeppelin and Beatles and having damn good fun with it lol =]]]

how about you, who you think could be awesomest band lyk tottally awesomest like totally ahh!!!1!!!

jk jk

Nyx
01-09-2008, 03:42 AM
I actually don't know of any good new bands, that's why I started this discussion:P

angela
01-09-2008, 04:07 AM
hrm.. i like jonas brothers.
i think their music is good!
:)

Nyx
01-09-2008, 04:22 AM
Bout the only thing I like about the Jonas brothers is that one of the members of the band is quite hot:P

angela
01-09-2008, 04:31 AM
YEAH! high five!!

Nyx
01-10-2008, 04:19 AM
So, we said what kind of music we liked, let's talk about music we hate or dislike and why.

Alex
01-10-2008, 05:23 AM
Well I'm not quite heated enough to discuss why I hate modern rap music, so I will save that for tommorow or later once I finish this thing for school =]. No love for jazz in this house. Miles Davis = beast lol

angela
01-30-2008, 03:27 AM
heavy, i mean deadly heavy rock, kind of scratches at my brain; makes me feel like i want to scream and almost, pull out my hair :) [i think its probably half of what the heavy-metalists do]
jazz, that isn't my best genre; most of the music ive heard are a little too quite and the chello? is it? just annoys me.
real classics, are alright, but i don't usually prefer them.

wow, im a little picky.. well.. no offence intended to anyone by the way.

Nyx
01-30-2008, 03:52 AM
So what kind of music do you like?

angela
01-30-2008, 03:59 AM
what would you call piano music? AKA, bella's lullaby-ideas..
also.. RnB - i like the beats and the lyrics.
soft-rock songs - lyrics again and just the sound, i guess.
and.. pop - korean and japanese mostly. =]

song atm: when you look me in the eyes - jonas brothers :Diloveit.

an Aly& AJ fan?

I have a couple of friend who listen to them, but they get mad when I ask them to tell me why they listen to them.

Ichigo
06-21-2008, 11:50 PM
I haven't heard that one...
Is it from their new cd? I thought I was buying that cd, but I have this DVD instead...it kind of sucks.

Hey, at least it's not the Jonas Brothers.
JONAS BROTHERS= FACIAL HAIR AND HUGE EYEBROWS= EW.

hehe ^^

Nyx
06-21-2008, 11:51 PM
Haha, I'm in the FB group called that :P

Midnight_Moon
06-21-2008, 11:53 PM
Why I like Aly & AJ? Well, I really like what they sing about. There problems and things that lots of teens can relate to. They also write all there own songs, I love singer/songwriters. They're music is more of a just, let's have some fun, not serious emotional songs (except "No One" that one is good).
So that's why I like Aly & AJ.

Ichigo
06-21-2008, 11:54 PM
Haha, I'm in the FB group called that :P

Yeah I joined the group. AMAZING.

I don't think I've ever heard Aly & Aj...
Although she has my name!
le gasp! :O

Ichigo
06-22-2008, 12:34 AM

It's pretty good.

Rouge
06-22-2008, 12:43 AM

Ichigo

Rouge
06-22-2008, 05:00 AM

Nyx
06-22-2008, 05:02 AM

Rouge

So many better ones. Up Against The Wall is good.

Ichigo
06-22-2008, 06:47 AM
Haha...I don't know any of those bands.

Shall we get back to music anytime soon?

jordanisonfire
06-22-2008, 08:54 PM
Of course we should. ^^
If you could have just one genre of music in the world, what would it be?

Nyx
06-22-2008, 09:11 PM
Hm...Classic Rock. I would say Rock or Alternative seeing as I listen to those two most often, but when I really need music: I listen to Classic Rock.

But one genre of music would get boring.

Ichigo
06-22-2008, 10:05 PM
I agree. Diversity is a blessing.

*pulls out bazooka and points it a Shadow*
