What about classics?
Shaun
12-28-2007, 05:43 PM
Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Children's (which I am going to take as younger readers...like Alice In Wonderland and such)
Carraka

Fantasy and sci-fi. I try so hard to get into the other genres, but it doesn't work. Maybe something's wrong with my mind.
Shaun
12-28-2007, 05:57 PM
Nope, there's nothing wrong with you. You just happen to like those genres :P. I have problems getting into other ones too!
Carraka
12-28-2007, 06:08 PM
So much for expanding your horizons. Then again, reading fantasy and sci-fi is better than not reading at all!

I occasionally try to broaden my horizons. I get bored. So I gave up. :p I just love fantasy and history, and it stimulates my imagination and umm ... fun-feeling-ness.
Whatever, I enjoy it, and there's no problem with that.
Carraka
12-28-2007, 06:16 PM
Ooo you're all so self-confident!
I wanna be just like you!
-simpersimper-
I have read interesting stuff from other genres though. Not all is lost!
Scie-fi and fanstasy is basically all that I enjoy! Everything else...I'm probably forcing myself to read it.
I occasionally wandered into other genres when I was active at Critique Circle. But I'll never understand romance. I'm far more likely to satirize it than read or write it. Then again, reading unfamiliar genres is supposed to be good for your own writing, so...*shrugs*

Fantasy, Gothic/Horror, Mystery and Thriller. I write the first two, but add elements of the last two sometimes. :D
Carraka

I once had EC critiqued by a professional writer. She told me that it was good fantasy, but recommended that I branch out into other, non-magical genres. I decided that in order to accomplish this, I needed to read other genres. After I fell asleep at the bookstore for the first time in my life, I decided to return to fantasy and sci-fi.
Maybe I can still try horror. Or erotica. xD
jordanisonfire
12-28-2007, 10:30 PM
Do horror, Carraka, it adds more character to the book. :) Though, a little erotica never goes amiss... joking, of course! :D
I read an article. Adding in erotica or idiotic jokes (fart noises, etc. :D ) may make get you some more readers, but it'll really alienate people who have been enjoying your work without that stuff. So, not a good idea.
And yes, Shadow, I am aware you were joking :)

Was that sarcasm, Andrew?
Rafael Domination
12-28-2007, 11:01 PM
Sci-fi all the way....or did I already say that?
jordanisonfire
12-28-2007, 11:03 PM
Naw, don't worry, Rif-Raf. :P
I think Fantasy and Sci-Fi are going to lock heads in this poll. :) It's like ninjas and pirates all over again...
jordanisonfire
12-28-2007, 11:09 PM
Which is ninjas and which ones pirates? Maybe they could be medieval ninjas and space pirates? :P
Probably. Space ninjas would be interesting, though. Even in an astronaut suit, they're still speedy and deadly. :)
jordanisonfire
12-28-2007, 11:13 PM
That'd be funny, with like lightkatanas and stuff. :P
Imelda
12-28-2007, 11:18 PM
Medieval pirates!
jordanisonfire
12-28-2007, 11:19 PM
Hey, I've just seen now, it's Steak-Ums' birthday! :D
Medieval pirates!
Yeah! With bows and arrows instead of guns! :D
Imelda
12-28-2007, 11:23 PM
Or, y'know, cutlasses and magic.
jordanisonfire
12-28-2007, 11:26 PM
Magic pirates? My God, what has the world come to...?
Rafael Domination
12-28-2007, 11:30 PM
Fantasy vs. Sci-fi will actually be a future Round in my VERSUS thread. Magic versus Technology. It's going to be epic! :D
Hm...Fantasy vs. Sci-Fi...I think it'd be impossible to have a winner for that:P
I tried writing really happy fantasy-ish stuff with fairies once...it didn't turn out so great:P
Rafael Domination
12-29-2007, 03:49 AM
I know...but the fight in itself would be sweet! :D
I think Sci-fi has an edge, though. Voldemort vs. Death Star...no contest.. Planet-destroying Space Station wins the round by blowing up Earth with Voldemort and all his Horcuxes in one shot...
I see what you mean, but if there's a character it wouldn't want to blow itself up :P
Shaun
12-29-2007, 07:09 PM
I think it's unfair to judge science fiction on a site like YWO. Considering the average age of people here there isn't much of a chance that anyone has been significantly introduced to science fiction yet.
There really aren't any science fiction novels for young adults, and those that are science fiction are termed more as urban fantasy. Peeps by Scott Westerfeld is actually a science fiction novel, but we call it urban fantasy. The Uglies series is the same, even though it's technically an SF tale.
But how many of you who are under the age of 18 have read Asimov, Bradbury, Heinlein, Anderson, Vonnegut, Dick, etc.? My guess is very few of you have read any significant chunk of those works. But I'm sure a lot of you have read Rowling, Tolkien, Lewis, and any number of other favorite fantasy authors.
Now, if we were to come back to this when all of us are in our 20s or older, it might be fair to pass judgment. But right now, you guys probably are not exposed to science fiction much. 1984 and Brave New World might be all you've read...
Carraka
12-30-2007, 03:03 AM
Ha! Try blowing up my immortal angels with your Death Star. Not gonna happen.
I don't actually write about immortal angels.
...
I do have immortal characters, though. Can't blow those up.
...
I think I'll address Shaun's post instead. Although I can't really do anything but agree. Sure, I've read Asimov and Bradbury and Vonnegut, but I haven't read the others. Mostly because I keep forgetting. And I think I've never even heard of etc., but I've probably read a few of his works as well.
Maybe I've been exposed to science fiction, but I haven't been exposed enough to tell you with iron certainty that I've been exposed.
I've definitely been exposed to fantasy, though. xP Yes. Come back to me in six years. If I haven't read Heinlein by then, that probably means I've died in a car crash.

I do have immortal characters, though. Can't blow those up.
Ever read Marvel Comics? They have cosmic entities that sneer at immortality, and they're from a sci-fi genre....
Besdies..."For every action there is and opposite and equal reaction. For every defense, there is an attack. For every immortal, there is a killing blow...it's just a matter of finding out what." (That came from one of my novels that also involves Higher Beings...)
Carraka
12-30-2007, 03:19 AM
Well, he can't die, and he can't kill. There is your reaction. Or balance. Or whatever.
And leave him alone. I can't actually defend him, of course, because um, he's not very nice. Yeah, I'm the author and all, but it's kind of confusing to me. Anyway, let's just say that we can argue with each other, but neither of us can argue with him, so it's kind of pointless.
Rafael Domination
12-30-2007, 03:21 AM
I know! :D
It's like god versus god. We can fabricate our realites against each other, but we'd never succeed in eliminating each other because those realities don't exist and aren't powerful enough to take an effect...
(Another event in my novel.)
Carraka
12-30-2007, 03:24 AM
Well, you sound luckier. I can't even put him in a novel anymore, because he won't listen to a single thing I say. The only thing I can do with him is stick him in some stupid legend or story-that-no-one-will-ever-read. I can also roleplay with him, but not with the likes of you. You guys would kill me for the perfection.
Rafael Domination
12-30-2007, 03:25 AM
The perfection...
Erm...never mind! :D
Carraka
12-30-2007, 03:26 AM
Since we are talking about something that controls my mind, I must ask:
What?
And you might as well thank me now for not killing you for perfection. I'm so nice! -squeal-
Rafael Domination
12-30-2007, 03:28 AM
Thou canst not kill me.
I am immortal as well.
Bring it.
:D
Carraka
12-30-2007, 03:28 AM
Well, maybe you're immortal, but you're definitely not perfect.
I'm talking about your characters, silly. In the RPGs.
Rafael Domination
12-30-2007, 03:30 AM
Perfection is vague. What might be perfect to one may be inperfect to another.
Anyhoo...what about the characters? They're just seed that I develop before plaving in my novels...
Carraka
12-30-2007, 03:31 AM
I think it's my turn to say it.
Never mind.
Rafael Domination
12-30-2007, 03:47 AM
You're funny! :D
I like you.
Erm...back to the topic...
I also have a thing for graphic novels.
Shaun
12-31-2007, 07:36 AM
Exactly Carraka :P. You need to be exposed to it more to make a good judgment. There's a lot of different SF out there, and not all of it is the stuff that stigmatizes the genre...
Zaphkiel
01-01-2008, 04:30 AM
I like graphic novels a lot, too. I'm trying to collect all the Naruto, Shaman King, and Yu Yu Hakusho ones. And before anyone says anything...I am not a geek.^_^ Anime and Graphic novels are just a strange quirk that I have. Well, not Anime, but Graphic novels are.
I'm not a huge fan of graphic novels but I respect people who do because it really is a combination of two beautiful artforms
Shaun
01-01-2008, 04:48 AM
To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of graphic novels until I found some really good ones. Alice 19th is probably my favorite. My brother and I love that series. I bought all of them as soon as I read the first one. There are a few really good series out there. I sometimes thing some of my ideas would be best fit into the manga scene, but I don't have an artist and I can't draw manga worth a darn  (heck even something more urban and interesting would work...I want to turn WISB into a graphic novel really bad)
Anywho, it's a good form though. It's hard to get into for sure.

Maybe you can PM me during the summer holidays when I've got craploads of time to spend...I think I might help...:D
Shaun
01-02-2008, 02:12 AM
Or you could PM me and say "OMG, I want to turn it into a graphic novel....please please please pick me!"
Rafael Domination
01-02-2008, 02:13 AM
Yeah, that'll do too! :D
During the summer holidays...
and I think it'll be manga style :D
Or you could PM me and say "OMG, I want to turn it into a graphic novel....please please please pick me!"
OMG OMG OMG CAN YOU LIKE TURN CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS INTO A MANGE THAT WOULD BE AWWWEEEESOME

I've always thought my Novel "Me, My Past, and My Blood-Stained" would make a good Manga.
Rafael Domination
01-02-2008, 03:34 AM
You think it might make a good manga? I KNOW it would made a swell manga. :D
I mean, come one! It's just so anime. Kuraime could put a lot of manga characters out there to shame, once you've reached your full potential...
jordanisonfire
01-02-2008, 01:12 PM
Yeah, Kuraime sounds like the kind of guy you'd find in a manga.
Rafael Domination
01-03-2008, 12:51 AM
He and all the characters just has this anime 'cool' about them...it's all very intriguing...
Yea, Zaphy's novel would make a great manga

I think you should work with Rif-Raf, Zaph, and make a manga comic strip. It's be cool. :D
Shaun
01-04-2008, 12:38 AM
Touch, Raf has already been commissioned for the "World in the Satin Bag" graphic novel... :P. Would be neat to see something turned into a graphic novel around here :D.

HAHA! I'm the only one that likes westerns...well, i hated them before I read Last of the Breed by Louis L'Amour. I love native american culture, and that book was about the last of the authentic souix indians. It is not a western, takes place in the 80's and is about an experimental aircraft pilot that is taken prisoner in Soviet Russia. Anyways, I fell in love with L'Amour's style of writing, read a few of his western books and a western fan was born...

Fantasy and Science Fiction.

I voted Fantasy, Sci-fi, realistic. They're the first three--in that order. Ha!

08-05-2011, 02:07 AM
Realistic and historical fiction -- but not like everything is hunky-dory, all the problems get fixed and they all live happily ever after. I hate that!

11-17-2011, 08:45 PM
What about classics?
As you may have noticed, my all time favorite book EVER is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I like Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice too (Sense and Sensability wasn't as good). I want to read Jany Eyre but I haven't gotten round to it, and Romeo & Juliet is one I'm still workin on.

My favorite is a three between mystery, drama, and romance. If there all on one book, it's normally my favorite. Unless the author of Twilight were to write one like that. I'd probably hate it! No offense Twilight lovers.

Historical, Fantasy and CLASSICS. Why isn't Classics on the list Andy?!?!:glare:
(Actually, classics isn't my number 1)
