In the near future world is a different place. Everything is destroyed besides a small peace of land in America. It has become a country named Capitol. It has 12 districts.
Every year the Capitol, in reminding of their power and strength, are making the Hunger Games. In these Games only kids from 12 to 18 years can participate (or more like are forced to participate). Only one survives.
Katniss Everdeen is a girl living in the 12th district. She lived poorly, with her mother and sister and basically she is taking care of all her family. though it is forbidden by the law she hunts in the woods to get her family some food. She has a friend named Gale and both of them hunt in the woods to take care of their families.
But everything changes in the day when Katnisises little sister Primula is chosen to be a part of the Hunger Games and, in order to save her sister, Katniss goes to the Games herself.
So, has anyone read this book? Did you like it?

Heard about it... actually seems really interesting, and a lot of my friends liked it. I've been meaning to get to it.

I've got the first two books but have only read the first one. The story is great, but the writing isn't very good, really. She goes off the track to explain the smallest detail and uses flashbacks too much to show something she could just show anyway without them. They style was annoying, but I enjoyed the idea of the story. :)

I read it when I was in fifth grade, and I thought it was awesome. I read the second book recently. It was good, I guess, but my complaints are similar to Lily's. Katniss is an adequate main character, I suppose, but she's sort of generic as far as heroines go. Now that I'm older, I find myself reading more for the writing itself than for the story. Which means I have yet to find a good enough book. :P I am needing recommendations, people.

I just bought this book two days ago. I actually thought it was really good. The plot was fine, but I actually like the writing too/more. I preferred the starting of the book to the ending though. The end of part one was stunningly beautiful, even though I already knew that. I think Peeta is a pretty good side character.

In what language, then? :3

OMGGGZZZ!!!!!
Sorry for ^, but I've honestly read The Hunger Games and Catching Fire a combined total of 40 times, and it NEVER gets old. Sure, the writing is poor—has Suzanne Collins never heard of a "," or ";"?— although, it is intended for an audience younger than myself. I’ve also caught a couple typos, and the concept is reminiscent of The Running Man... But it does have pretty clothes and even prettier boys. ;)
And I actually love Katniss. She doesn't sit around and mindlessly whine and rant about her crappy life, but she gets up and does something about it.
Oh yeah, did you know they're making a moive?
I read it when I was in fifth grade
How is that even possible? The Hunger Games came out in Sept. 2008...

-> That is what I love about the main character, because many people do whine about their crappy lives, though they are not so crappy and sometimes I'm one of them. :D
And a movie? Really? Haven't heard of it before thanks for mentioning this here ^_^

Peeta may not be that strong physically, but he is very very very strong mentally and in his love towards Katniss and that is what I love in him. :)

I finished it last week, it was epic, but I gotta say, a little TOO much kissing between Peeta and Katniss. Haymitch turned out to be alright, and I am currently reading the second book- Catching Fire

I haven't read it myself but, to be honest, it sounds alot like "Battle Royale" by Koushun Takami. Which itself is a guns blazing version of "Lord of the flies."

I read the first two books and they are brilliant. I can't wait for the last one to come out.
But one thing I think I don't have in common with you is that I hate Peeta and love Gale. Go Gale! Peeta is too soppy, and is a character WAY overused. And he says "I want to know whats going on from now on," then goes and says "Well, Katniss is pregnant and we're married." Without telling her that he's going to say that.

My friend has married this book, and got me caught up in it as well. I don't know, though. It's probably my aversion to fluff, but the romance sections were the worst. "I guess I have less competition out here" "You never had any competition." Ugh!

Wow! I LOVED the ideas of Battle Royale and Lord of the Flies! It makes disliking Hunger Games a bit bitter.

I've heard nothing but good things from people who've read this series. I recently bought the first book, too. Good job.

I L-O-V-E-D this book. But yeah, there was waaay too much romance. I REALLY like Peeta though :) I've finished all 3 books (Mockingjay was awful) and I can't wait for the movie to come out!

I dunno, I kinda liked Mockingjay. But, yeah, I can't wait for the movie.
And to hell with Team Gale and Team Peeta...
TEAM RUE FOREVER!!! (And Prim, too!)
Our lil' girls are awesome. Especially Rue... RIP! :(

It does have some similarities: a bunch of kids chosen by impartial lottery put on a arena/island and forced to kill each other and the last one alive wins, enforced by the government and there's a certain amount of romance between the MMC and FMC. But they are quite different. I've read all three books and LOVED the first two, the third one I didn't like that much but then again I think the last one was trying to send a message while the first two were more for entertainment. I'm sooooooooo excited for the movie. :D

I have seen the premise but this looks like a potential rip-off of the Japanese Battle Royale :X.

Yeah, loved it, but the writing was a bit crap. Sorry Collins.

I liked the Hunger Games and the Catching Fire more than the Mockingjay. The series is great all in all. I just think there's so much kissing in it. LOL.
