The Anthem is set in the future. People are no longer given names but codes and they refer to themselves as 'we', never 'I'. Individualist ideas are prohibited and everything in society is controlled. The main idea in the book is that everything is done in a group, there is no such thing as individuality.
The main character Equality, unlike other, is curious about the world and so he doesn't accept the rules of society. He then goes on to learn a new word that has never been spoken in years, the word 'I'.
This is a really good book. Great book, actually. I loved it.!:D
