I've never had this problem (because I don't show my writing to my friends), but this might be helpful for those of you who do. Or the questions might work for critiques on this site.

This could be very useful if I ever finish writing a novel.

I'll remember to ask people this whenever I ask for true, honest critizism. I never believe they are telling the truth :D

Very good article. I would also add one question:
Would you buy this story if you found it in a store?

Yeah, those are good questions to ask and you could probably easily adapt them for a short story or something as well.

They are quite helpful. But I'm the same as you Majyk I never show writing to my friends but I guess I could ask my parents or my dog ;)

I had the pleasure of attending a lecture with my friend (he's going on sixty) by a simply amazing art critic, who said if you want a compliment, show your work to your mother. If you want to get better, let the critics shred it.

I wish I hadn't forgotten about this ...
Six people have read EC now (five of them real-life, including, yes, my mother) and I couldn't think of any questions to ask them when they had finished. Now they've probably all forgotten. It was all very stressful and not at all as useful as critiques on here (though they did get to tell me about how they felt about each character after the whole novel, which was interesting when people had opposite feelings). I supposed that I had to be brave enough to show stuff to my friends eventually. One of them even didn't like it outright (she didn't finish the prologue) and criticized my diction. I've decided she wouldn't my target audience anyway.
