Shaun made this thread at TW, so I thought it would be fun here, too.

Depends on what I'm writing. If I'm writing a sad thing I play sad music and so on. It just depends.

Mostly I write to the sound of loud college students. It all gets muffled into one continuous noise, so it doesn't distract, but that's how I write now :S.
Hm...well there's alot but here's a few that usually get me writing and keep me writing:D
Cemetary Drive-MCR
Icky Thump-White Stripes
Pins & Needles-Billy Talent
Love like Winter-AFI
Silver and Cold-AFI
Some Say-Sum 41
The Pretender-Foo Fighters
Modern Swinger-Pink Spiders
Curse of Curves-Cute is What We Aim For
Zero-Smashing Pumpkins
0-----
Those are the main ones:)

MCR rules! Yes, I know, "they suck Shaun, you have bad taste". Bite me. I like their music and they're the only supposedly "emo" band I listen to with any frequency. The music is good and catchy and it makes me happy, so meh.

Yes MCR does rule! I love them...and yes that's a true fact:D

I like listening to some evanescence when I'm writing poetry :) But when I'm writing my stories I actually like having a movie or show in the background.

I do listen to a lot of classical while I'm writing and not on campus. Classical tends to help me focus because it's generally very soothing and doesn't require my attention unless something I really love comes on. But general classical is sort of like little birds chirping delightfully in the background.

I will say that I've gone off MCR now, they just don't entertain me anymore. I've moved on to heavier rock bands and they make me feel good now. :D
How did you get all that stuff, Andrew? :P

I commission pandora.com to entertain me. When I'm writing, though, music can distract me - and I just write to the sound of my own complaining about how hard writing is.
Sometimes I listen to the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack...

Yea I think my MCR fase is coming to an end too, I still like them, they're just not on my top list anymore, so anyways heavier rock bands? Examples please?:D

Oh, they'll be back, don't worry about that. :P. It's just been a long while since their album came out so they've sort of fallen off for a while. That happened with all of their albums really.

Well, for one, Slipknot is now my favourite band. I also enjoy Cradle of Filth, Bullet for my Valentine, Lordi, to name some more. Pulse of the Maggots by Slipknot is the most awesome song to mosh to, it's a real adrenaline boost. :D

Oh yea Slipknot is pretty good, I've only heard a few songs though. The only other band I know of the ones you named is Bullet for my Valentine, they're awesome.

First, I would like to contribute my two cents to the great MCR debate: THEY RULE!!!
OK, now that I've got that over with...
My playlist changes from project to project, of course, but I can usually depend on these:
"Escape", Alice Cooper
"Hate Me", Blue October
"Haunted", Poe
"Hallelujah", Jeff Buckley
"Disenchanted", MCR
"Teardrop", Massive Attack
"02.20 Boy", Suicide Sports Club
"Ordinary Life", Kristen Barry
"Signal Fire", Snow Patrol
"Phantom Limb", The Shins
"Runaway Train", Soul Asylum
Ok then get ready for this. Being a fairly big music ((rock)) buff I would like to say that I am disapointed in almost no classic rock songs on any of these lists. Tsk tsk guys but its not up to me to critique now is it ((at least not in this thread it isn't))
Well my writing playlist usually goes like this
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin ((Just the greatest song ever thats all))
Hotel California - The Eagles ((Yes I like old school I know))
Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix ((All in my brain!))
Black Magic Woman - Carlos Santana ((love it love it love it))
Saving Us - Serj Tankian ((Like one of my totally like favorite songs now like totally oh my god I sound like a schoolgirl!))
ATWA - System Of A Down ((Its a song about love for music I mean come on))
40 Feet - Franz Ferdinand ((Love the bass in this))
Your Gaurdian Angel - The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus ((My "sweet" song in this playlist))
Freak On A Leash - Korn ((Gotta thrown in some of this stuff right?))
Ride The Wings Of Pestilence - From First To Last ((Yay Sonny Moore is gone))
Comfort Eagle - Cake ((Gotta love the political tones in this song))
thats most of the big ones. Try to throw in most of the softer stuff so I can concentrate but also throw in many genres to capture alot of emotions. What do you guys think I even gave you little parenthesis comentary, more than you bargained for right?

Well, I've discovered what helps me: Tool songs. Seriously, search Tool on YouTube, their songs are quite inspirational. Well, most are. Some involve quite heavy rock, so those aren't really inspirational, but the slow and quite soft rock songs are good for writing.
Hotel California - The Eagles ((Yes I like old school I know))
Ehehe, you like my dad's favorite song:P
what can I say I like the classic stuff
people can say what they want about it, but you have to respect it because it has been some of the most influential music ever written
I'm sorry I just can't find a way to immerse myself in the hip-hop culture of today, and I feel it just suits me better ((songs from the 50's - 90's)) more than most of the bands of this era. In an era where the music industry is littered with corprate sellouts knowing there were people who, back in there day, wrote very controversial songs for the shear pleasure they felt is awesome to me. I'd just rather listen to The Yardbirds than Soulja Boy. I wish more people felt like me, everyone does somewhere inside, but what really bugs me is that people don't even know who these people are. People know Autechre for founding Techno, Public Enemy for launching rap, Anthrax/Metallica/Slayer for thrash metal, MCR for "emo" ((they aren't emo at all but w/e people like them and they are one of the biggest bands of the genre)) yet no one talks about Jimi Hendrix/Robert Plant/Eric Clapton/Jeff Beck/Carlos Santana for basically taking rock from a sub-genre of jazz to a music of its own
Well thats my music rant for the hour =]
Wow all that in response to you like my dad's fav. songs?:P
Anyhow, I undertand. :)
Yea... sorry about that lol
music passions me though so I tend to go overboard when discussing/arguing it
Ah no problem, have you joined Jordan's music club?
theres a music club??
Is it on here or is it another forum?

Duality - Slipknot
Pulse of the Maggots - Slipknot

yeah, I do the same. Except I can only use songs from games and movies I don't know. Otherwise everything gets mixed up. :p
I listen a lot to the soundtrack to Longest Journey, which is free online somewhere. king's quest soundtrack is good, too. Foreign films are good, too.

I don't usually listen to music when I write, because it distracts me- I like concentrating on lyrics, the rhythm.
If I do, it's classical- some Chopin and my favourite "Canon" by Pachelbel. As a result, anything I write turns out to be the most melancholy poem/story ever :)

Bread by Charlie MacDonell. I listen to it on repeat.

I usually like listening to lots of different pop/R&B/Hip-hop/Dance/Rap-ish songs when I write, depending on my mood. I absolutely always listen to Eminem if I'm writing a sad story and to Rihanna and others when I'm writing something jumpy and lively.

I listen to whatever's on my "Current Favourites" playlist. At the moment it's mostly Plain White Ts, Lady Antebellum, bit of Taylor Swift and a couple of the new Glee Cast covers. Yes, Glee. Don't judge me :P

Basically whatever music comes up first. Mostly it's The National or Manchester Orchestra, but if not, it's AFI. "Under the summer rain, I burned away, under the summer, we burned away..."

Mostly movie soundtracks actually. The music writes a story in my head, and then I write it; my best friend called it the most bizarre form of plagiarism on the planet :P
Thats why I almost never listen to music with words when I write. I like the story to freeform, without influence from lyrics.
