No mine isn't like that, I just didn't remember if you were a ninja supporter or pirate, (I read on the poll and you said you loved both so that cleared it up) but long story short I thought you were just going to beat up one of the two with the other. Now I feel dumb...
walk away slowly...

Authors Note: Here it is, my submission for the contest!
Darkness on the Sea
Thunder flashed overhead with a deafening clap. The black wooden ship sailing across the Pacific sliced through waves and currents like a knife through butter. Cold, unforgiving rain poured down from the skies in sheets, drenching the crew of The Black Death in freezing water.
"Get those cannons in position ye stinking cockroaches! Put yer backs into it ye yellow sea dogs! I can see the damned ship getting closer! Move, move, move!"
The ship's captain barked orders and waved his long sword through the air, pointing, jabbing and occasionally striking at his crew members to hurry. His long gray beard rustled in the wind and rain. The storm had blown his hat away into the deep dark waters below, leaving thick, curly locks of silver to dance around his head.
His eyes were narrowed and locked on the growing ship not a hundred yards away. The red sails and patchy woodwork belonged to the captain's nemesis and once friend, Edgar Sollen. The Red Maurader drew closer and closer to The Black Death, getting bigger and bigger with each passing second.
"Captain Lopoldo, the cannons are ready," said the captain's first mate.
Lopoldo turned his head and regarded the gaunt, sullen face of Stubs. The first mate was dripping from head to toe with water, rivulets of the liquid rolled down his nose as he stared into the eyes of his fearless captain.
Awaiting orders.
Awaiting the order.
The order to commence fire.
"Very good, Stubs. Very good."
"Shall I give the order sir?"
The captain took his eyes off Stubs and returned his gaze to the oncoming ship in the distance.
Seventy yards away.
"No, not yet," he replied.
Stubs blinked. His lips pulled back, revealing yellow, decayed teeth in a grimace of confusion. Surely the captain had a reason for not declaring the order?
"Sir?"
"Stubs, ye have much to learn about the tactics of a captain and his ship. Trust me."
"But sir, they are within firing range. They may fire upon us first."
The captain simply smiled. His dark eyes remained intent on the red ship drawing closer.
Fifty yards away.
"Sir, they are getting too close!" cried Stubs.
"Wait for the order, you white bellied Nancy!"
Come closer, my old friend..., the captain thought. Come closer so that I may rape yer ship and steal its treasures.
"Captain, I can see the deck! They are too close!" Stabs continued.
Twenty yards away. Perfect.
"Fire! Fire!" the captain roared. "Blow these scurvy sons of land lovers to Davey Jones Locker!"
The great black ship rocked on the sea as cannons discharged their ammunition onto the enemy ship. Repeated cries of, "Fire the cannons!" and various hollers filled the cold night air. Flashes of red and white illuminated the darkness, the rain still pouring only added to the spectacle.
From the main deck, Captain Lopoldo watched the bombardment with a satisfied smirk on his face.
The enemy ship was losing large chunks of wood with each hit it sustained. The red sails that billowed in the wind moments before were now full of holes and torn apart. Huge gaping holes the size of watermelons littered the sides of the ship causing it to slowly begin its submergence into the sea.
Despite the bombardment and damaging blows, The Red Maurader did not return fire. It remained still on the water, simply coasting along as it took the beating. No signs of life were visible aboard the ship, not a man, not an animal, not a child.
The ship was crew-less.
Captain Lopoldo knew his nemesis well. He would never let his beloved ship take such a pounding without retaliation. Not unless he wasn't aboard.
Something was wrong.
"Cease ye firing ye eager bastards!" he shouted.
As the order was relayed throughout the ship, the cannon fire stopped and except for the sound of the pelting rain, the noise pollution ended.
The Red Maurader continued to drift on the water, captain-less, crew-less, empty.
"Alright boys, get aboard and take what ye can. Kill anyone who gets in the way! But if ye find the ship's captain, leave him for me."
The captain was greeted by a joyous cheer and as the enemy ship drew closer, grappling hooks and ropes were tossed aboard its frame. Within minutes the crew of The Black Death was aboard the ship.
"Check the lower holds and captain's quarters!" Lopoldo barked. "Take whatever ye can!"
The pirates scurried off into different directions, all searching for loot and bounty. Captain Lopoldo looked up into the cloudy sky and let the raindrops fall onto his face.
Where are you, Edgar? Why is your ship unoccupied?
A sharp scream broke into his thoughts. He whirled around at the sound and drew his sword. Gunfire sounded off somewhere aboard the ship. Pistol bullets pinged off barrels and doors while the rain mixed in with the noise.
Cries of pain and and more screams filled the air, prompting the captain to investigate the sounds.
Edgar, you bastard! If this is some trick, I'll have your balls!
The captain ran towards the lower level entrance, there the sound was at its highest. He took a step down onto a staircase step and heard sounds of wet meat being pummeled.
Another step down and the sounds got louder.
Two more steps down and his eyes rested on blood. Blood on the floor, blood on the bottom steps. Blood on the walls beside him, blood on the severed hand at the bottom stair.
"What in Gods name...?"
Lopoldo stopped his descent into the lower level and dropped his sword. From where he stood, he could see the entire lower level floor and the carnage that was scattered along with it.
All of his men were dead. Some were dismembered, some where nothing more than just bleeding torsos. Blood was everywhere, seeping into the wood and turning the color into a deep crimson. Intestines and other internal organs were strewn across the bodies of the dead. The crew members who still had their faces intact were staring blankly at Lopoldo or gazing intently at the ceiling. Their eyes all glazed over and seeing nothing. But what was most unsettling about the carnage were the cadavers feasting on the dead.
There were ten of them by Lopoldo's count, each of them more grotesque than the other. Two of the cannibals were no more than just skin and bones. They had skeletal faces, and arms as thin as twigs. The other three looked relatively normal. The only thing that subtracted from their normalcy was the fact that they either had a missing limb, or a face that was so badly torn up that it was impossible to tell their appearance. The remaining five cannibals were in better condition. They had all their limbs, no severe wounds, only blood stained clothes and pale complexions.
Lopoldo stood still, watching them devour the dead bodies of his fallen crew mates, too shocked to move. The cannibals continued to eat on, not having a care in the world but their current meal. Slowly, cautiously, Lopoldo started moving backwards, hoping the killers wouldn't notice him.
His boot bumped into one of the steps. The cannibals looked up. He was spotted. With a hungry moan, they all left their meals and started shambling toward him, their filmy eyes intent on his flesh.
"No! Get away ye demons!"
Lopoldo didn't waste any time. He turned around as fast as he could and bolted up the steps, his boots leaving resounding thuds in his wake. The undead gave chase behind him, lurching after him with hungry groans.
Clearing his way out of the lower levels, Lopoldo ran for the ropes that would get him across to his ship. He looked over his shoulder and saw the dead in pursuit, then he returned his eyes forward and gasped.
The ropes were gone. The grappling hooks were absent. The Black Death was sailing away.
Captain Lopoldo took two steps forward and leaned against the wooden railing of the ship. Behind him the cries and groans of the undead grew louder and louder.
"Me ship..." he muttered, his own voice barely audible over the pouring rain. Time seemed to stand still for Captain Lopoldo as he watched his ship float away into the darkness of the sea. A groan sounded off directly behind the captain's ear, sending a cold chill up his spine.
The rain poured down, continuing its battering of the ship. The Red Maurader was dead, along with the crew aboard it.
And so was Captain Lopoldo.
Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirates life for me.

Argh...I'm not confident in this story at all, but I'll give it a go
Uxinta-enkai – Winter Ocean
Ninjas have always used science over magic, albeit a very arcane kind. While they do not live in the dark ages anymore, they have always stayed true to manipulating aspects of Nature, always developing modern and ancient ideas to this very day…
“Boring,” Aki sighed.
“Not my fault,” Keigane said firmly, setting down the scroll, “Father and Mother placed me as your teacher while we journey towards Honshu. Just because you’re destined to save us all it doesn’t mean you’ve gained the right to skip school.”
“But I want to fight,” Aki protested, “Thousands upon thousands of pirate ships surround Honshu as we speak, bombarding it with their weapons. I know a lot of my friends there have been killed. I want to rip off a few pirate head for that.”
“You’ll get your chance,” Keigane said, “but for now – you’re going to have to brush up on your basic Ninja-Training lessons. No exceptions.”
Aki growled something inaudible. Keigane ignored him and continued to read from the scroll.
“…With the ability to manipulate Chi, the very energy generated by the soul, ninjas can perform feats that no ordinary human can. By concentrating Chi into our feet, ninja’s can briefly run up walls or on water for a few seconds. We can use Chi to bend light around us, rendering our bodies invisible to our enemies. Ninjas can increase their strength, speed and heal the gravest of wounds using Chi. Many more abilities can be unlocked with the proper training. The purpose of this lesson for today is to take the first step in this ‘proper training’…”
“Why about my Chi?” Aki asked, cutting his brother off, “does that scroll say anything about it?”
“No,” Keigane said, slightly irritated, “that’s for more advanced ninjas. Like me.”
“If you tell me, I won’t interrupt you again for the next hour.”
“Well,” Keigane said quickly, “Put that way…your Chi, Aki, is special. As Chi is a part of nature, it sometimes tends to associate with certain elements and aspects that make up the world. My Chi affiliates with Metal. Father’s bonds more with Earth. Mother’s, with air. Your Chi, however, is a rare and powerful kind. That’s why we’re traveling to Honshu now. You’re about to play a very important part in the war.”
“I know that,” Aki sighed, “I heard our parents saying something like that before they sent us to go. I’m not exactly sure of what to do, though.”
“No one’s told you yet?” Keigane said. “It’s been three days already, and we have five more to go before we reach the port – and you still don’t have a clue what you’re supposed to be doing? Don’t blame me – I was on lookout duty all that time.”
Aki shook his head.
“Just do what you usually do,” Keigane said with a sigh, “like the time you killed dad’s goldfish?”
“Oh,” Aki raised an eyebrow, “That’s it?”
“Yes.” Keigane smiled. “And what’s more, remember the time you made that village angry for ruining their entire lake during that tournament? You only put a little of your Chi into that attack move, yet miles of water t–!”
“I know, I know,” Aki said, not wanting to think of that little incident, “where are you going with this?”
“Well,” the older ninja said, “imagine what two of you could do?”
“Wait. There are more like me?”
“Only ten in the whole of Japan,” Keigane said, “As I said, your Chi-type is a rare one. But you and the others will be enough to cripple that invasion. We’re all counting on you to pave the path to victory.”
“But I don’t know how to fully control my Chi yet!” Aki said.
“That’s why I’m training you.” Keigane rolled his eyes.
“Well?” Aki snapped, “What are you doing gazing off into nowhere? Hurry up and finish the lesson already! Father always said you were the lazy bastard of the family…!”
A loud smack startled a stray sailor one floor above. He scanned the horizon for any pirates, but found none. He ignored the noise and went back to sleep. An hour later, Keigane packed up the scroll and began to prepare lunch. They would be having fish, caught fresh by the fisherman on the ship. In the back of the room, Aki rubbed the large, throbbing bump in the shape of a fist-mark on his head.
* * * * *
“The last port town has been over-run,” the ninja sighed, “the pirates will soon try to attack us from land. We might be able to repel the first few waves, but with the reinforcements from Indonesia unable to get through the pirate blockade, I fear we won’t last too long. Forgive us, Marukami-domo.”
The daimyo turned around with a disappointed look on his face. But, he didn’t strike his subordinates, only nodding and giving them an order to secure the capital cities. The ninja darted out of the quiet, plain little room, and he was left alone with a few of his advisors.
“Tell me, Mizuken-san,” Lord Marukami sighed, “Have the convoys made it through?”
“Yes, my lord,” the man replied, nervously fiddling with his beard, “The Black Ops of several nearby villages have also lent their aid. We have amasses a land force that could withstand any army as long as supplies last.”
“And how long would that be?”
“Well,” another man replied, scribbling madly into some parchment. His name was Kazemori-san, and he was the intellectual of the group. “If the pirates continue to raid our farms and mines at the regular pace of a hundred per day, we will be out of resources in three months. That might seem like a lot of time, but we should all take into account the lives that will be lost during such an event. I say we gather everything and ration it over that year, and fortify our positions as much as we can.”
“Nonsense!” The next one that spoke was a gruff, warlord-type who went by the title of Kurogami-san, the General of Honshu. “We should focus everything in creating an attack force to exterminate those sea-dwelling pests!”
“I appreciate your enthusiasm about killing the pirates, Kurogami-san,” Lord Marukami said, “but such a force does not exist on this island. It would take the ninjas from the whole of Asia to combat those thousands of ships, which are the forces of all pirates from all over the world, united in one common goal – to steal our riches and wipe us out.”
“So we’re alone in this?” Kurogami-san cut in.
“No,” Lord Marukami said, “as a matter of fact, reinforcements are already on their way.”
“But I thought you said that they weren’t able to get through earlier?”
“Those were the Indonesian ninjas,” Marukami smiled, “the ones from Honshu are about to join up with the convoys we sneaked past the blockade from several other islands. When they do, the pirates will literally be in for the coldest night of their lives.”
“You don’t mean?”
“Yes,” the Lord smiled, “However, I think we should abandon that topic for now and discuss other plans. You never know who might be listening at a time like this...”
* * * * *
“Here they come,” Keigane smiled.
In the distance were the sails of several small barges. Like the wood of the boats, the cloth on the sails was black. The feature had worked with the barges’ small size to sneak past the massive galleons of the pirate armada. In a few minutes, they would join the boat from Honshu.
“We head straight to Yokohama from here,” Keigane said, “straight into the heart of the blockade. Then, we run them down.”
“How long will that take?” Aki wondered out aloud.
“Well,” Keigane motioned with his head towards the fog in the distance, “we planned ahead to meet three miles away from it, so I guess we’ll be seeing action soon enough.”
“What! But I’m not ready yet!”
“Just do what I’ve been teaching you for the last five days,” Keigane said, “and we’ll be fine. The rest of the crew and I will handle the rest.”
“But there are thousands of them,” Aki said, “It’s too dangerous! You’ll be-!”
“What?” Keigane smiled, “killed?”
He placed a hand on his brother’s head and ruffled the boy’s hair.
“Try not to insult me like that again,” he chuckled, “relax and wait for the signal. I’ll be just fine.”
Aki took a breath and nodded. He clambered up into the crow’s nest of the ship and looked towards the barges that were now sailing beside the Kuma. A few other ninja had done the same thing, settling into the crow’s nest of their ship. They were varied in age, ranging from the elderly woman two barges left, to the teenage girl dressed in a dark blue kimono to Aki’s right. She flashed a quick wink at Aki who blushed and looked away shyly.
Below, a tall ninja with a scar running down one of his eyes walked onto the Kuma’s deck. Aki recognized him as the captain. The two had never spoken once, and as such Aki didn’t know his name. But one thing was for sure: the moment the man unleashed his chi aura, it was like a storm of energy erupted into the sky. Of course, chi was invisible, and didn’t make any noise. However, to ninjas who had the ability to sense the auras of living creatures, the experience was almost terrifying.
Aki’s surprise was renewed again when Keigane unleashed his aura. Like the captain’s, it was unbelievably powerful. Skilled ninja’s had to hide their auras for stealth, but when the time for face-to-face combat arrived, they were usually never shy about revealing it.
More auras erupted into existence on board the other ships. The ninjas on the crow’s nests began to gather their chi too. The air seemed to drop down in temperature and the tension rose up like the fire form some volcanic eruption.
They’re all so strong, Aki thought, I don’t know if I can even help.
Keigane looked up and smiled at his brother.
“Do it,” he mouthed.
Aki nodded, and began to gather up his chi. Keigane taught him a poem to help focus. It was a little nursery rhyme their parents cooked up with Keigane himself on the day of Aki’s birth, right in the middle of winter. It consisted of three little haikus, starting with one from his mom, ending with Keigane’s, to commemorate Aki’s entrance into the world.
Winter’s beauty is
pure. Winter is the end of
an old, fading life.
Winter’s wrath is cold.
Merciless and grave. Only
the strong survive it.
Winter. My brother.
It flows through your veins as blood.
Cleanse the world today.
Aki unleashed his chi upon the last word. A few of the ninjas on the other boat staggered for a split second, and then regained their composure. The captain below gave Aki a curious glance, and then smiled.
“There remains hope for us yet,” he said to Keigane.
“Was there really any doubt, sir?” the teenager replied.
In the distance, the fog cleared off. On a clearer day, a lonely sailor would have caught a glimpse of beautiful land, with rolling hills and green as far as the eyes could see. Today, mountains of a different sort blocked that view.
The pirate armada was massive both in numbers and ship size. The mammoth galleons sported hundred of sails that stretched out like the clouds wreathing a mountain peak. The sides of the galleons literally bristled with cannons and oars like the back of a hedgehog. One side was pointed towards land, and the other was aimed towards the sea. Lights glittered on the ships that would each have taken an entire forest and iron mine to build.
“On my mark,” the captain bellowed.
Aki built some spare chi into his legs. It would give him an extra burst of energy for the jump.
The pirate ships seemed to have noticed the newcomers. But instead of peppering the ocean around them with cannonballs, the ships in the distance simply began to turn and head towards the ninjas. Slowly, they moved their massive hulls around, pointing their fancy hull ornaments that ranged from hanging mermaids to gaping sharks at the ninjas.
“It seems like they’ll just run us over,” Keigane said.
“Big mistake,” the captain replied.
Flags began to rise on the poled of the pirate vessels. Skulls and crossbones soon decorated the sky with their eerie grins. Aki gulped, but steeled himself.
“Now!” The captain called. He didn’t roar. The order was loud, and it was laced with command and authority. But it was sneering too, as if he had really meant to say, “show those insects who they’re dealing with.”
Like ten arrows shot from the bows of demigods, the ninja on the crow’s nest leapt off their ships and fell towards the water. As they were about to make contact with the heaving waves, they took one fist each, and brought it crashing down onto the sea.
The pirates never saw it coming.
Ice exploded from underneath the ten ninjas, rippling out and freezing the waters around from horizon to horizon. But Aki wasn’t done yet. He took his second fist and pointed it at the sky. As soon as he unleashed his chi, the clouds above took on a darker shade of grey, and snow began to fall by the bucket, covering the frozen sea, and creating a less-slippery battlefield to fight on, decreasing the temperature at the same time.
Keigane could almost see the looks on the pirates on their ship. It would have been like magic to them. But it was actually Aki’s Ice-type Chi bending the nature around. The plan had been a simple one from the start: remove the pirates greatest advantage over the ninjas: the water.
As soon as the field was set, the ninjas on the small barges charged out. There were only a hundred of them in total, but they were not alone for long.
From the land, the remaining ninjas swarmed onto the ocean. It was a flank attack. The ninjas stayed invisible, using chi to bend the light around them, until the last second. Then, they devastated the ships caught in the ice, unable to turn around. With their cannons facing nothing but other ships, having turned around earlier to do so, the pirates were at a serious disadvantage.
They fought valiantly, as far as rogues go. Pirates of all sorts made their stand, from the wildly flailing madman with gigantic hooks for hands, to the gun-toting berserk firing wildly into the masses of ninja, to the bearded monster that matched cutlass against katana, even the glass-eyed freaks employing their massive parrots and monkeys in combat.
Aki tried to get up and join in, but he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“You rest for a while,” Keigane smiled, “you’ve done enough.”
“But-!”
The whiz of bullet cut Aki’s words off.
“See what I mean?” Keigane said. He had stopped the little round pellet a few millimeters away from his brother’s eye, “this is a little over your head right now.”
“But will you be alright?” Aki asked worriedly.
“My chi controls metal,” Keigane laughed, “those rascals happen to have a lot of it that I can use. I think I’ll be just fine.”
“Alright,” Aki said, “I’ll see you later then.”
Keigane nodded and leapt away, right into the middle of the raging war.
* * * * *
Needless to say, the ninjas won that day. The ocean had frozen up for thousands of miles, allowing the ninjas of the Asian continent to join in. Their superior martial arts, discipline, and chi were just too much for the crippled pirates to handle coming from all sides.
Keigane died during that battle. He had faced off against several dozen traitor ninjas, hired by a captain with his pirate gold. Keigane was able to kill all of them, whirling a storm of Shuriken around his body like orbiting insects, cutting the traitors to ribbons before finally facing off with the captain. The man had tried to shoot at Keigane with his pistol, but had the device wrenched out of his hand by Keigane’s chi. In desperation, the pirate set fire to the gunpowder barrels tied to his gargantuan waist, and an exhausted Keigane, tired from the thousands of kills he made that day, couldn’t get away in time.
Deprived of their massive fleet, the pirates all over the world went into hiding, trying to rebuild their power. But with the ninjas controlling all land, they were unable to do so. The last pirate died three years later, choked by his own vomit after drinking too much rum.
Aki was pronounced a hero along with the other ninja that day. He regularly visits his brother’s grave, except during winter, when nature blankets Keigane’s final resting spot with a layer of clean, fresh snow.
Anyhoo, there it is.
DEATH TO THE PIRATES! :D

Death to pirates... ... I'm not bias... and I'm not judging this contest alone so I can restrain myself... :)

It will be a poll, but how many people have entered their stories?
Just you and Zombie? Maybe I should put one in... probably not though. but yeah, it will be a poll.

This should be fun. I have a bad feeling I'm gonna lose. Zomb's story kinds had more substance in his! :P

And I get the feeling people will vote for Raf because there are more Ninja fans than Pirate fans.
I'm hoping it won't be judged on that basis, and more on the content and quality...

Either way, I had fun writing this.
It was nice to come back to zombies after so long.
I think this story will hold up, but if its judged by someone going, "Oh, it's a pirate story. Fuck him! I'm voting for Raf even though I haven't even read his story! He likes ninjas so his story MUST be good! Bahaha!"
Then I expect a very divided poll....

Actually...zomb...you had a couple of pirates killed in a very greusome way...if that doesn't plase the ninja-lovers, I don't know what will ^^ :P
