View Full Version : Domain Network: You Decide

Let me explain, because the title might be confusing.
I'm writing a story where there exists this giant virtual world controlled by AIs, somewhat like the Matrix, only it's more than one world. It is divided into what are called Domains, which are simple different levels of the AI world that you have to earn your way to. You can't just jump from the First Domain to the Tenth. It's sort of like a game, but at the same time you live in the AI world.
Now, there are fourteen of these Domains. I have named six of them, but only one is actually developed.
What I'm giving people the chance to do is decide what the other eight Domains are. Every Domain is a Domain of ... something. You decide the something. Now here are the rules to this. It HAS to be something I can translate to a virtual world where things look like real life, but exist somewhat differently in that fantasies and the like are present. So these should be things that you would like to see lived in. The Third Domain, for example, would be a place that all you detective wannabes would like to go to. It's the Domain of Art and Justice, and so there are private eyes, detectives, cops, and criminals, all living within this virtual world doing the things that you see in private eye movies, cop movies etc.
It has to be a concept I can translate. No "Domain of Anime", because Anime only exists as a cartoon, not as a reality. There aren't real people in physical form in an Anime, only drawn characters.
Your idea also has to be somewhat interesting. Not "Domain of Cheese" or "Domain of Baseball Bat Makers". Just something that would sound like a place that people would like to go to and live in. Sort of like the example of the Third Domain.
Does that all make sense? I'm giving you all the chance to come up with a fantasy world that revolves around something you'd love to see in such a world.
Here are the Domains as they stand, in numerical order (... represents a Domain that has nothing to it):
1. Domain of ...
2. Domain of ...
3. Domain of Art and Justice
4. Domain of ...
5. Domain of ...
6. Domain of ...
7. Domain of ...
8. Domain of ...
9. Domain of ...
10. Domain of Asia
11. Domain of Rome
12. Domain of ...
13. Domain of ...
14. Domain of ...
Plus the two side Domains created by a human, which are evil Domains that represent fantasies only for the insane or criminal:
15. Domain of Absolution
16. Domain of Chaos
So, have at it. What would you like to see in a virtual world?

What exactly goes in the the Domain of Chaos?

Good lord, that's a lot of suggestions. I expected one or two from each person, not 10...
Of the ones you guys mentioned, which ones do you like the most and why? What would make you want to hang out there?
As for the Domain of Chaos...basically...imagine complete and utter chaos. People being torn apart, things exploding etc. There is no rhyme or reason to anything. Things happen for no apparent reason. There are no natural laws, etc. Rogue AIs wander around there doing whatever they want to whomever they find.

Oh...my...you've made me a bit nervous there, Shaun...
How's that work? If there are no rules or anything, then it would be impossible to fit that into an AL world. The formulas for such a world would be non-existent, in which case no form of order would be established: people wouldn't exist in such a world, and if people exist, then the chaos is defied. Chaos has a tendency to defy itself, and that results in a domain of order, in which case it would remain as a domain of order...
No natural laws?! Cool. It would be fun if my hand experienced spontaneous combusion.
Let's see:
Domain of Science/Knowledge: People here would seek knowledge, and to learn more about their world. They're information-addicted, for whatever reasons you can think up.
Domain of Heart: This one could probably be for those who enjoy experiencing emotions. Like love would be a big thing here. Sex, maybe. Something like that.
Domain of Beasts: lots of animals, and really unnatural animals. People could enjoy hunting here, maybe investigating animals?
The others were all based on specific kinds of elements or landscapes, so they could be for AIs who like them, and like the sorts of things you can do in them.

Oh dear...I hope Shaun doesn't beat me to something...but then again...it might not be the same idea...
(It's about one of my novels. Still a secret. Sorry...just had to let it out.)

I think you're not quite understanding. The AI worlds are like virtual worlds. They're not like going to another dimension. You simply live within them as if you were really there, but really it's in your mind. Think the Matrix, only multitude of different worlds with different functions within that Matrix-like place. There isn't one Earth-like place, but all these others.
So people can exist in the Domain of Chaos, since it is within the mind and certain rules can be bent. You can, theoretically, fly in a virtual world (although I've established set rules that prevent people from doing so because I really think it's retarded to see people flying in the sky like superheroes...). The Domains are intended to be as realistic as possible, but the Domain of Chaos simply defies that. Part of what makes it so dangerous is that a human created it against the laws of the AIs, who run the other 14 domains. In the story I'm working on set in the Third Domain, that character, named Palmmarrow, is actually killed, presumably because of the fact that he has created these other Domains and has defied the AIs over and over. Marx Ignatia is the main character who is trying to figure out who actually killed him and why. The AIs want to think that another AI did it, because it would seem justified, but Marx is confronted by a Rogue that can travel between the Domains, even though that isn't possible without clearance or without there being a security hole, and that basically makes her realize that there is something else going on. If an AI had killed Palmmarrow, it would have been made public...

Oh, so you mean its not total chaos?
Shaun
12-08-2007, 05:29 AM
It is total chaos. The Domain of Chaos, I.E. the Sixteenth Domain, is nothing but murder, destruction, etc. That's all there is there. People who go there only go there to kill and destroy, but without any care. Think of it as the ultimate Hell. Anything and everything that could go wrong, does go wrong. You could be walking along and a hole could form under you and you could fall onto a pit of spikes. Or you might find yourself suddenly being pulled apart, piece by piece, or you might suddenly find yourself being cut open by some psychopath.
If you ever saw Event Horizon, there are these moments where they show clips from another dimension where all these people have gone completely crazy and started eating each other and other absolute craziness. That's the Domain of Chaos.

Murphy's Law anyone?
Shaun

Exactly :). Murphy's Law would play nicely into that Domain.
Exactly :). Murphy's Law would play nicely into that Domain.
You could drag a plot on forever if you apply Murhpy's law all the time. :D Like, for a different story, on their way to rescue a princess, they're captured by orcs, end up in another dimension, then another universe, then...etc, etc.
