i just started writing a novel and i've decided i want to outline the story. i can't decide if i want to outline the entire novel before i start writing or do it chapter by chapter. a cyber-penny for your thoughts?

I've found that doing a general outline before writing anything is a good idea, just so you'll know what direction to take the story. You'll probably end up changing some of the chapters while you write, though, so I'd advise against doing a detailed outline for every chapter. :)

I would say always have an outline for the entire story. It prevents you from drifting all over the place and gives you a general sense of direction in developing the plot and characters. You don't have to list down all the fine details yet, but perhaps consider the main events that will take place along the way. For me, I like to know the beginning and the end of my story while having a rough idea of what happens in between. When I write, I tend to build the story chapter by chapter, with each chapter having its own focus e.g. introducing new characters, highlighting an event, killing of the main protagonist etc... Happy writing! :)

I concur - having a general story-line is always a plus. Be careful not to trammel yourself in though - I find that when the plot-line is too detailed, it loses the zing that it should have. Be wary of your characters too - if your characters don't agree with the story-line, it'll ring of poor craftmanship and be generally a very awkward and unbelievable narrative.

I've tried starting with a simple outline and other times where I didn't start with anything more than a general idea. For me, the outlined novel didn't end up as good as the other two where I didn't plan, so I don't outline anymore. It feels restricting to me. But you want to outline, so I agree with Andy.
