View Full Version : What is YWO missing?

Here's a good chance for everyone to tell Andy and I basically what you think the site is missing. What do we need to improve the site?
So, start suggesting.
On that note, at least two people have suggested some kind of contest awards/achievements that would be visible in profiles. I'd like to get started on that as soon as exams are over, so think winter break. :)

attachments...but that's just me :D
Anyhoo...the site's fine, considering only two people set it up! BRAVO!!! :D
From what I recall, we disabled attachments because a lot of people at TW found them confusing, and also to save storage space, because images take up a lot.
Thanks, BTW. :)

I'd suggest a way to automatically resize images so I don't have to do them manually...but...yeah I don't think that is going to happen. I'm talking about when I upload images for the bookstore. It takes me about thirty minutes to resize all the files manually when I'm doing about 30 books at a time...
I think Photoshop has some feature where you can record a list of actions you make to something, and then replay it. Like, if you record what you do to one image and save it, you can do it to a dozen in a few seconds.

Oh, like a macro. I should figure that out then. If so I can have a cool function that will automatically do that for me :D
I think YWO is missing a blog, but there's already a thread for this so...:D
I'd like to start a blog soon, too. Ooh! I could contribute to the site that way while Shaun handles all the stores. :P I've got a bunch of ideas for it. Maybe, (again) winter break? Or January. Maybe I'll start it on my birthday. :D

I know...it's missing MODS!!!
But we cant have them yet...lets wait for a few hundred more people to show up and then we can start elections! :D

What are the qualifications for a mod?
Rafael Domination

I dunno:
You kinda have to be good at what you do to give people sound advice, you should be fun, responsible, a good people-person, some up with neat things to spice up your forum and now I'm starting to see what a difficult job it is...

While we will need mods soon, we don't at the moment.
And when we do choose mods, it WON'T be with elections. Shaun and I will stalk you and see who we think would be best qualified for a mod. That way, there's no chance it'll be a popularity contest, and it'll be based solely on qualifications.
Rafael pretty much summed it all the qualifications up, give or take a few. :) Donating thousands of dollars to the site may also boost your chances, because it shows you care. Awww... :D

Yeah, Andy and I have talked about adding a mod in the relatively near future, since we're coming close to the 100 member mark. I think we've decided that once we hit 100 active members we'll likely seriously consider adding a mod. If you don't want to be a mod, tell us, that way we won't waste time considering you :P.
Also, on the subject of a blog. Do we want to use Wordpress? Andy, I know you can install the scripts and stuff for it so we can have full reign on adjustments to the template and stuff. I can also look for a nice template that isn't some common one that everyone has, and we can host the blog on here.
Also, you're not doing it by yourself :P. I want to be involved :P
I actually think Blogger is a lot more customizable than Wordpress at the moment. You can edit the entire page and add javascripts, neither of which wordpress allows.
About hosting the blog here, I'm sort of against it, at least for now. For one, it uses a database, meaning if we exceed the allowable number of people accessing it, the server will crash, like it did before. I'd feel a lot safer if we got free hosting for it at Blogger or something. Not to mention they update the stuff automatically if there's a bug, etc.
Free hosting just seems like less hassle to me.

Yeah a site blog where everyone can make entries would be really cool.
Mods? I guess bu Andy and Shaun do fine, besides we don't really have that many people here so maybe in the future but I don't think we need any right now.
EDIT: Wow in the time I wrote my message four other posts were made... You guys are fast :)

Well if we're hosting it off site then we'd have to go with Blogger because Wordpress is too restrictive.
However, if we host it on YWO we can use the Wordpress software which allows us to customize everything. The free online version of Wordpress only lets you customize if you pay for access to the CSS. I don't think we should have to pay.
The upside is that we can educate people here about RSS feeds and how to subscribe, that way they won't have to go straight to the page every time
Maybe we'll move the blog to YWO when we upgrade the server (which I imagine will happened eventually anyway). But we can go with blogger for now I suppose. We'll just have to get it set up. I just don't like blogger because it doesn't give some functions that WP has. Maybe we could use typepad or something...we should research this.
I could manage the blog part of the site, and everyone can contribute to it. That could work really well.
And there's a script where we could display the title of the most recent blog post on any page here, so it wouldn't be very disconnected from the forum, even if it was hosted elsewhere.

I think there's a big problem with having "EVERYONE" contribute. It'll be impossible to keep track of if we're all posting stuff. It needs to be structured. And we need a nice template that doesn't suck. But I'm somewhat against having EVERYBODY involved in the blog. It'll just be too much.
Well, yes, not EVERYONE. I misspoke. We could probably get a small staff together for it.

I think you're missing a sparkling series of YA fantasy, but there we go ...
I don't know. I love this site a lot. Maybe a shoutbox/cbox
Well, yes, not EVERYONE. I misspoke. We could probably get a small staff together for it.
I like the idea of having a staff for it but if we really wanted EVERYONE to be involved at some point, we could have an even smaller staff that's always contributing to it and another group of users who contribute but are changed every month/week.
Or we could accept submissions that anyone can give.
So typical of you to always have better suggestions than me;)
Yep, the submission thing is definately better.

Yeah, Andy and I need to have a long discussion on the blog thing before we make any exact decisions yet :P. Logistics are going to play a big role in it.
I thought of something else YWO is missing: a snowy layout to celebrate december! (Winter layout!)
I thought of something else YWO is missing: a snowy layout to celebrate december! (Winter layout!)
We're getting one! :P Think: twelve days of Christmas.
Awesome. Can't wait for it!:)
I'd like to give this thread a little bump. What do you think YWO should have that it doesn't already? Do you feel anything is missing, or inconvenient, or confusing?

I think it's pretty well perfect the way it is.
I've been getting that feeling lately, too. I blame it for the fact that I'm spending more time writing and critting.

I like YWO the way it is too, though I imagine something is missing. I just don't know what it is. Merchandise is coming soon, so yeah.
I think it's missing female staff members.
I can help with that :P
I think YWO's good the way it is, I can't think of anything that's missing at the moment.

Well now that all the women are throwing a fit over there being no female modship I'm going to make an announcement: there will never be a female mod unless one of the current mods has a sex change. Just in spite. So ha!

No female mods?
Not reading GRRM?
Enjoys controlling other people?

We don't need a female admin; we just need to get rid of a male one.
Yea, I'm good with Carr's idea too.

WHOAH!
I JUST realized that there are no female admins. O_o
Sexists. :P
No, Nyx worked on the blog, so she was staff for a while. Until the blog just died away.
Oh yea...well the blog died. So still:
There are no female staffs.
