What is the difference between lyrics and poetry? Is there any real difference?

Technically the only recognizable difference between the two is that one is sung, and the other is not, although, in all fairness, that's not historically true, as a lot of "poetry" was sung.

But, really, there is no logical difference. Both can and often do contain the same elements and styles. The only thing you could say that really defines lyric style is that there is a tendency for the existence of a section of verse and a section of chorus. Again, that is not standardized. There really is no difference.
