I didn't come up with these myself. Every Tuesday I have to make a plan for the afternoon's Creative Writing Workshop at my library, so I weave my way around the internet to find some interesting prompts that will tie in to what we've been talking about in the workshop. I thought I'd just share one of them for this week, and see what you guys come up with! (If you're already pretty well-versed in figurative language you might find this boring or even limiting, but try to have fun with it anyway :))

Finish each phrase with whatever metaphor or simile comes immediately to mind.
To really get the most of the exercise, don't worry about coming up with something good, just write. The whole idea is to get your subconscious to make connections in a new, more creative way.

My appologies, some of these are pretty lame, but all in all I had fun! Number 7 was my favorite! I can't seem to get passed number 12 though. Any suggestions?

1. Blue paint spilled on the road like mucus oozing from an orifice.
2. Canceled checks in the abandoned subway car
seemed littered about like leaves under autumn maple trees.
3. A spider under the rug is like a silent surprise waiting to be unwrapped.
4. Graffiti on the abandoned building like spidery veins on an old woman's leg.
5. Nothing was the same, now that it was all spilled over like a child's bucket of toys.
6. The dice rolled out of the cup toward Veronica
like fallen acorns rolling down a hill.
7. A child in a temper tantrum is like a gorrilla let loose in
an antique store.
8. That leather jacket is so small it is like muscles stretched taut over bone.
9. The fog plumed through gunshot holes in the car windows like steam from the spout of a teapot.
10. She held her life in her own hands as if it were a fragile porcelain doll.
11. Lacey poured coffee down her throat as if she were lost in the desert and dying of thirst.
12. If I should wake before I die,___________________________.
13. The security guard walks the lobby as if he were a pacing tigress watching over her cubs.
14. The library books left in the rain like a forgotten childs plaything.
15. Music in the hallway like bird singing in the treetops.

1. Blue paint spilled on the road like gooey blueberries that were trapped in the evil faerie's bottle.
2. Canceled checks in the abandoned subway car
seemed like the impressions of the tax man who had stalked me for three blocks earlier that day.
3. A spider under the rug is like a person under a huge spider: not very nice.
4. Graffiti on the abandoned building like people mocking me, their ghosts taunting my weak and frail figure.
5. Nothing was the same, now that it was the last step I would ever be taking.
6. The dice rolled out of the cup toward Veronica
like huge boulders rushing to squeeze the life out of her.
7. A child in a zoo is like a butterfly in
a jar owned by an evil faerie.
8. That rubber band is like muscles stretched taut over bone.
9. The fog plumed through gunshot holes in the car windows like the evil last impressions of the man who was trying to kill us.
10. She held her life in her own hands as if it were world.
11. Lacey poured coffee down her throat as if it were a magical potion, brewed to supress her fears.
12. If I should wake before I die, leave me to my own devices.
13. The security guard walks the lobby as if he didn't know of the snipers above him.
14. The library books left in the rain like a neglected child's toy.
15. Music in the hallway like a calming ocean.
...SO I think I missed the point on some of them. Oh well, it was fun.

I don't care if this is from a year ago, it's fun :)
1. Blue paint spilled onto the road like the drooling wisps of dreams that pour out into a soggy mess when you wake up from a good night's sleep.
2. Canceled checks in the abandoned subway car
seemed like the floating flakes of scratched dead skin that drift in the musty air.
3. A spider under the rug is like a needle pressed against a taught fabric, about to burst out the other side.
4. Graffiti on the abandoned building is like the stain on your newly pressed evening gown that will not go away,
5. Nothing was the same, now that it was told from the opposite perspective.
6. The dice rolled out of the cup toward Veronica like the two bandits, drunkenly stumbling up the road with their guns waving crazily in the air.
7. A child in a cribs like an innocent man in jail.
8.Restringing a guitar is like muscles stretched taut over bone.
9. The fog plumed through gunshot holes in the car windows like the droplets of dirty water that drips through the pores of the sponge.
10. She held her life in her own hands as if it were a plastic butter knife one would use to butter crumpets.
11. Lacey poured coffee down her throat as if the bitter caffeine was the only thing propping her eyelids open.
12. If I should wake before I die, I would not like to see my death.
13. The security guard walks the lobby as if pac-man had disappeared and the ghosts were getting desperate.
14. The library books left in the rain like the forgotten dreams of a matured child.
15. Music in the hallway like the low murmur the electrical appliances use to seduce the house during the night.
