Okay, I'm kind of lost as to when I should start the real "action" of my novel. See, the main part of the beginning is when my characters, Michael and Emma, are thrust into a strange new Realm. When should I thrust them? Is the second chapter too soon? I've already done all the introducing and threw in a little conflict between M and E and their guardian, Gran, but I don't know if I should make another chapter for my readers to get to know M and E. Or should I just cut to the chase? I'm sorry for all the posts--I'm not new to writing, but when it comes to actually crafting the novel . . . uuurgh . . .

No, questions are good. Don't apologize. :)

Okay, the best thing for me to say is that it's whatever feels right. If you feel like you've established all that's needed, put them into the new realm. It really just depends on how much setting up you need. Once you set up a story, you can begin the rising action, and I believe that such an event would qualify as rising action.

If you need help deciding when to do something, try making of list of everything you want to include before the said event happens. =)

Good luck, and if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. ^_^

I'd agree with Mercy. The big issue is going to be making it flow properly. You can have it happen in chapter two so long as it doesn't feel abrupt, but is in-sync with the general flow of the novel. I think Ch. 3 of one of my novels that uses this sort of theme was the actual point of departure, but I can't remember now. Other novels have done it in chapter one, etc. Just read it and see. If it feels like you're doing it too quick, then stick some other things in there to draw it out more.
