I'm guessing this is a joke?

Yes Shadow, Google is a master of these. April Fool's Day this year they put up a website that looked so serious people almost believed it that involved a new kind of free internet service that required you to put a cable down your toilet and flush it. It was absolutely brilliant because some people actually sand down and thought about it logically...
This is why Google is the greatest company in the world...

Not Wikipedia, then? :P BUT we're not gonna go there...

Yes, to quote one of my friends; Google is our faithful leader.
But your right Shadow we shouldn't get into that here. Although it may be a good idea for the Debate Section. :sarcasm:

Any of you ever type "French Military Victories" into the google search engine and then press "I'm Feeling Lucky"? If you type "Biggest Loser" and then press "I'm Feeling Lucky" you used to get president bush, but not anymore.

I remember that. The sad thing is a lot of the clicks for things I search for take you to wikipedia...which makes me ill...

Couldn't have said it better myself. Wikipedia appears almost everywhere. Even in my dreams.

Oohh! Maybe you should detonate a virus onto that site, eh?

KIDDING! Don't...If you so, I'll also get sacked for givingyou the idea...:D

No...erm...how 'bout posting links to other sites that are better. You could make a couple of converts here...

Google.com and Common Sense. Two wonderful inventions. It's impossible to give you legit sites for every subject, just look for places that look legit. Organizations like NASA, etc.

Rafael Domination
11-22-2007, 05:23 AM
Ahhh...I see. And good sites to get spoilers on movies?

Shaun
11-22-2007, 05:25 AM
No such thing. Anything that spoils a movie can't be good.

Rafael Domination

noooooo! For me, it actually whets my appetite!

For example: LOTR movie kinda discouraged me from seeing it (it's almost three hours), but when I read about what went on in it, I just HAD to see the movie for myself...

Anyone remember google---Or was it gmail?- paper? That was hilarious.

And if you put certain coordinates in google maps, you'll get like the 24th direction saying 'Swim across the Atlantic Ocean."

Rafael Domination

What? why does no one ever tell me about that kind of stuff!

I guess I'm just cool enough

Shaun

Because you spend too much time on Wiki. :P

Well it's systematically destroying mankind one piece at a time...

While Wiki is destroying mankind and may not be 100% accurate or a good source to gain detailed knowledge on a subject, it's a good source for quick reference or to understand the basic, underlying facts to an issue. It's a useful tool and if you treat it as such and not as a scholarly source or the definitive truth, I think it's fine.

Shaun
11-22-2007, 06:03 AM
Well, then you could do the same with all those pulp mags you see on the newsstands. Weekly World News has the occasional truthful fact in there...so we should definitely use that as a valid resource...

I think that analogy is a bit of an exaggeration. While it isn't the most accurate source, most articles are fundamentally correct and good enough to provide basic--but not a thorough or detailed--understanding. I think it's almost if not as good as most print encyclopedias. I mean it's not worth citing in an argument, and it's not a scholarly source, but it is useful.

And they stopped publishing the WWN (I loved that tabloid).

Shaun
11-22-2007, 06:20 AM
Yeah, I know they stopped. Sales dropped thanks to the Internet.

Actually you'd be surprised at how inaccurate Wiki is. It's nowhere close to print encyclopedias or things like Britannica or Encarta. Anyone can edit Wiki. I've done it. Half the stuff that talks about illegal drugs or drugs that are yet to be illegal are so skewed it's disturbing. The fact that people do use Wiki for information as if it were like Encarta or a dictionary, etc. is disturbing. I've edited articles in Wiki so many times that I've given up. The information is rarely 100%. Not to mention, the people who check the information are not educated scholars themselves and are in no way knowledgeable about the majority of the information given by their site. They rely on the general public to put articles up for them, which is not what a legit source does. The most you should use Wiki for is random browsing to find subjects of interest, and then go elsewhere to get the real facts.

I retract my argument, mainly because your last sentence is basically what I think.

And then there was silence...

One thing that Wikipedia is invariably accurate with: videogames. Just goes to prove the priorities of the interweb.

Shaun
11-22-2007, 08:26 AM
Yeah, but you shouldn't legitimize Wiki even on that front. There are plenty of better sources for videogames :P.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that, though. Good luck finding a detailed analysis of Master of Magic or Age of Wonders on IGN, 1up, Gamespy, etc. Furthermore, Wiki is teeming background information.

Shaun
11-23-2007, 03:43 AM
Perhaps, but I've seen plenty of sites that weren't Wiki that provided just as detailed information. Google is a great place to find sites like that. My brother probably knows a few dozen other than Wiki, but since I don't play games as frequently as he does I don't know them by name. I have seen plenty of sites that went, in great depth, into the Half-life world, and it wasn't Wiki based at all.
Any traffic to Wiki is bad traffic because it provides them with the basis for continuing to destroy human knowledge...

I have to agree that Wiki isn't all that great, it's the easier and faster way of getting info. (and so extremely tempting to use in research for projects) but it's so often that there's false info....
