View Full Version : Podcasts For Writers
If you're not familiar with podcasts, they're sort of like radio shows which are posted online in episode format. You can subscribe to them, and have new episodes download to your computer. Then you listen.
Here are three podcasts for writers which I've found really helpful. They talk about ideas, editing, publishing, everything! I've linked to their websites, and if you have iTunes, you can click the iTunes links to go to its iTunes page. Otherwise, you can visit the site and subscribe that way. Enjoy!
Oh, and yes, they're all free.
American Writers (http://www.americanwriters.com/) (iTunes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150927587&s=143441))
A newer writing podcast that’s straight to the point with great advice. On the website, there's even a episode player that lets you listen without downloading! Unfortunately, doesn't seem to have been updated in a while.
I Should Be Writing (http://shouldwrite.blogspot.com/) (iTunes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=79085800))
“A Podcast for wannabe fiction writers, by a wannabe fiction writer.” For advice and encouragement for people published or not, this is great. Also doesn't seem to have been updated in a while.
The Secrets (http://www.stormwolf.com/thesecrets/podcasts/) (iTunes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73801905))
A podcast by Michael A Stackpole, who has written more than 35 books and seriously knows what he’s talking about. You can also subscribe to his writing advice newsletter (http://www.stormwolf.com/thesecrets/) for a fee.

I second "The Secrets". That is an amazing podcast by Stackpole. I've learned a fair amount from it.
Also:
Adventures in Scifi Publishing (http://www.adventuresinscifipublishing.blogspot.com/), which is awesome!
and
The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy by Tee Morris (http://www.teemorris.com/blog/), which is also awesome!

I think I'll check out The Secrets since it's actually done by somebody who had written a lot of books. As for I Should Be Writing, “A Podcast for wannabe fiction writers, by a wannabe fiction writer.”, I don't think I want advice from me.

PMD14: Actually "I Should Be Writing" isn't really about a wannabe fiction writer anymore. She has several publication credits to her name. She had them before she started and now she has a book published. And her advice is actually good advice.

How about podcasts by Timothy Zahn or Jeffrey A. Carver?
Chaos Chronicles Vol. 4_ Sunborn is out!

@ Shaun: Yeah I'll probably check out an episode of that as well.

Uhm, The Secrets didn't work for me. It said it isn't available in the U.S. which I find... weird since Andy is in the U.S. And Shaun too.
Maybe iTunes is just being gay.
You can download the episodes one at a time here (http://www.stormwolf.com/thesecrets/podcasts/). And they're long, so it shouldn't be TOO annoying.
I'm not listening to ISBW anymore. I dunno, I felt my time was better spent doing research and reading. I do like the carefree attitude of the podcast, but time's not something I have at the moment.

I listen to ISBW every once in a while. It's a good show if you're feeling down and sucking, because Mur isn't afraid to tell you that she's failing too. It sort of makes one feel good to know that there are others, even popular people, who struggle just to get somewhere.

I can't get to the other ones, but the American Writers Online one is really good! Is it just me that's having a problem with the others?
