I have a character in my book(Me, My Past, and My Blood-Stained Sword) called Kuraime(the protaginist). At some point in the novel, Kuraime is going to go through a change as he regains memories that were taken away by the CIA. His personality and outlook on life should change dramatically. My question is...what's the best way to make this change occur? Or what should the change not involve? And are their different techniques that can be used? And how should it occur?

Well, I hate to say it, but I need more information!

Do you mean, characterization or plot-wise...?

It would also depend on what the memories were. Happy memories? Sad memories? What would the memories make him want to do?

I could give you more info on characterization if I know how they would affect him. :D

The memories are about death, sorrow, and the thousands of people that would have lived if not for his creation. The memories would make him want to make things right again, yet at the same time he would realize his true nature...a blood-thirsty beast. He wouldn't want to put any one else in danger, but he would change drastically. Kuraime, as of now, is very kind, polite, intelligent, has a good sense of justice, is a passive pushover, avoids eye contact with people that intimidate him, and tends to avoid conflicts.

It would kind of depend on how he reacted. He could get angry at the people who did this to him, or angry at himself. His body language would change, he might be very much more in his thoughts than usual. The way he treated people might be different all together because he would realize what he was really like.

I'm... actually struggling to put to words how to explain this...Your question is straight forward, I just don't have a straight forward answer!

Sorry... I'm ridiculously unhelpful, it seems.

Well, thanks...I guess. Can anyone else help me out?

So do you mean like, maybe a memory-restoration device, or a powerful event that reminds him of those memories? I could think more about it if that's the sort of answer you're looking for.

Well, why does he have to change entirely? If you think about it, this is a great narrative device for you. Your character could get these memories back and find that some of them he's not too happy about. Think, Bourne. His past is horrible (this might not be the case for you), so he is conflicted because his present is initially mixed with a lot of happier thoughts--i.e. his girlfriend. So for your character, he might find himself rejecting parts of himself that made him who he once was, allowing you to slowly develop this change.
As for how to go about it. You should probably have little bits of his past come back as he starts getting clues to it. Then it wouldn't be so abrupt when he suddenly remembers everything.
