View Full Version : New Policy: Editing Literature Posts

This policy will take effect as of the moment of this post.

ANYONE caught editing posts to include a significant amount of new material, to replace an older chapter with a succeeding one, or to repost entirely new versions of a manuscript once a "critique cycle" has concluded without using the required points will be banned without question. The points system is there to ensure balance and fairness in critiquing, so that you have to give in order to receive. Abuse of this system will not be tolerated.

Please take note: If you have done this in the past and do not want this new policy to affect you, PM all mods and admins immediately.

The points system isn't perfect, but editing posts for the above stated reasons is a deliberate attempt to circumvent the system we have in place. Don't do it. It's rude, it's selfish, and it's an easy way to get banned.

By significant material we mean pages of new text, etc. If you add a sentence, that's really not something we're worried about.

Thank you,
Shaun

I think I've done that, but before the points system... I think. Is it alright is we edit the post, but then do a new post and count that one post as literature, so we lose the points anyway?

or to get new critiques from the same thread

can you elaborate on this one?

I've gone back and edited posts to change material. Like after working on a piece, I've completely gone and replaced the original story with the revised story, mainly so no one critiques the old material containing both typos and plot problems--like in the short story thread, for my story "Didn't it Work?" (Retitled: A Pill) I inserted two conversations, each about half a page long, meant to add depth to the main male character. I'm assuming that's okay.

I don't recall doing it at any other time or to circumvent the system, though. I have a good enough number of points to not worry about that.

can you elaborate on this one?

If you got a bunch of crits, went and edited your story, and then edited the thread with the new version and then asked for new crits. That's what I mean. Just fixing a typo here or there isn't what we're concerned about.

Shadow and Croc: Thanks for letting us know. I don't suspect either of you have abused the system, since you both have been here for a while and have been relatively supportive of preventing people from abusing the system.

Technically, Croc, when you add sections to it, you should have to pay. This policy may get revised though to allow for that.

Right now, we don't want people doing full edits of their stories, such as posting chapter one, then deleting it and putting up chapter two in the same section. Cause then you're really not paying. I'll change some of the wording to reflect that we're concerned with major changes.

1) Once I edited in a whole section, because I wanted everything to go in order. Then, I made a new empty post, basically declaring that I had editing in something new, and that post was worth 10 points. Then I deleted that new post.

2) Up until now, I have been editing my earlier posts, most of the time with stuff like adding description or cutting out terrible dialogue. I don't know if that's major enough to warrant me repeating my add-new-10-pt-post-then-delete trick. I don't ask for new crits when I edit my earlier posts, but any new member that decides to crit my story will be inevitably critting my new version, and not the old one.

I don't think that's a problem, Carr. I've changed the policy to reflect that we're concerned with MAJOR changes to the post, such as posting a whole new chapter, or adding significant chunks of stuff. Changing a sentence or fixing typos isn't a problem. You, Croc, Shadow, and anyone else doing these minor things are okay. I was a bit hasty in calling off all those things before. I think they're okay. We just don't want people abusing the system.

Thanks for telling me that right after I went through three heart attacks. O_oO_o

But yeah, I concur with this rule.

o_O Do people really do that?

If I totally rewrite a story, I usually just make a new thread so it will look neater (and still show up under "New Literature").

I gotta admit, once I added an extra chapter in the same post, but I looked for the "make this post count!" and it wasnt there!!
So I asked for advice in the same thread, and Majyk told me she usually adds new chapters to the first post, but then makes a new post saying she added it, and makes that new post cost 10 more points, so that's what I've been doing ever since :D

I think I've done it before to make everything easier to find. x.x Not to keep my points.

Errrrr, yeah. I won't do it ever again, though. :P

So what your saying is that you can't post mutipule chapters in a nother chapter you've already posted? Could you still edit it though? I would never dream of posting lots of diffrent chapters in one, well not till it was unalowed...hmmm... na I wouldint, but I do have a rep. the says I break rules (and other things :P). Its not my falt I didint mean to, it was him my evil side. *falls down on the floor fighting back evil half*

Basically, yes. You are supposed to pay points for every individual chapter, short story, poem, etc.

Yay for honesty lango ^^. Even though I obviously appreciate crits for pointing out my problems as a writer I rarely re-write things. Only because after a few months I realize it is a stupid piece of crap and delete it :P.

Yeah. I've been using the edit-then-create-useless-announcement-post-worth-10-points trick.

Woops. I didn't read this post until now, which I should have done. Shaun. You know about my editing. I shall not proceed to do this again.
