A Thousand Splendid Suns
The refugee-turned-writer,Khaled Houseni, is a well known scribbler now.His debut novel novel, the Kite runner, was a best seller and had inked the writer's name onto the hearts of all book lovers. The "Shakespeare" of twenty first century,Houseni's novels give a crystal clear picture of the lives of Afghani people;riddled with bullets and bombs, their social lives torn between internal conflicts and foreign invasions. Ironically, the great writer himself had been a part of these troubles before he moved to America. No wonder all his books weep like living souls over the fate of Afghanistan;every page laments the unchained tyranies and poisonous conspiracies that the Afghans bear. His second novel,A Thousand Splendid Suns, was also eagerly received. The very name seemed to utter a tale of its own.And then there was Kite Runner's prestige, reason enough to go for the new book.
The story of ' A Thousand Splendid Suns ' revolves around two women, Mariam and Laila, living very different lives, their worlds far apart from each other and never over lapping. However fate brings an ironic twist in the form of the Russian invasion; the beginning of the end for peace in Afghanistan. The two worlds get interwined and soon Mariam and Laila are clinging to each other as they embark on a dangerous journey to settle down into a fariy tale life, to live happily ever afterwards.Unfortunately Lady luck is not always smiling on them and soon it becomes a desperate struggle for survival, not only against the Russian invaders but also later against the Talibans and even their own people.Do they succed in wriggling out to their freedom?or does their tale join the list of millions of other unheardand untold ones???This now you have to find out by reading the book.
This book is an exceptional masterpiece and a must read for all.Khaled Houseni's exceptional narrating skills carve each scene onto the the reader's imagiantion. You quickly start feeling yourself a part of the world he is describing.Even if you have not read Kite Runner, this book is something that you should'nt miss.

I must read this. It sounds more in-depth than things like the Breadwinner or Kiss the Dust.
