View Full Version : Bookstore Suggestions
Here you can suggest books that we should add to the bookstore (http://www.youngwritersonline.net/ishop.php). Please tell us the name of the book(s) and the author(s), and also if those books are part of a series.
Please don't suggest anything ridiculous, like adding all 100+ Boxcar Children books. For a series longer than 15 books, we'll probably only accept the first book.:reading:
Even more helpful: if you can give us a link to the book's cover or its wikipedia page, it would make it much easier for your suggestions to be added.
Edit: (by Shaun)
Some guidelines to make things easier:
Alright guys, I'm in charge of adding books to the story. I'd like to ask you all to do a favor from this point on (everything before this post is fine the way it is). If you could provide the following information:
Full author name.
Name of book.
Link to a high resolution image of the cover of the book (doesn't matter how large, just so long as it looks good. The higher the resolution the better it looks when I shrink it)
Genre or if it is part of a series the name of that series.
So, yeah, it'll make things go really fast for adding books if all that info is given straight out.
Thanks guys!

At least for the time being we'll only take one for a long series. We want to get a lot of variety first. Once we start winding down we can fill up series though right?
My suggestion, even though you'll hate it: Eragon and Eldest
And something less lame: The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov (Foundation, Second Foundation, and one other which I forget...)
And Leven Thumps (both books thus far released--the Gateway to Foo and the Whispered Secret)
Some classics:
Dickens, Orwell, Homer, Faulkner, Steinback, Hemmingway, Lewis Carol (or Carroll), the guy who wrote Wizard of Oz, and more when I think of them...
What about books of poems?
T. S. Eliot, Byron?
Okay, those all sound like good things to add! I've already got a list of about 40 classic books, but since we'll be sorting them by author in the store, it'll be easy to see what we don't have yet.
Books of poems, yes.

Keats! Whatever we do, we have to have KEATS!
Artemis Fowl (Colfer), Pellinor (Croggon), and Inheritance (Paolini) series books added to the bookstore (10 total)

Hmmm, Shaun already said Eragon. So lets see, Wolf by the Ears (Ann Rinaldi), pretty much anything by her. But Girl in Blue, is a really good one. hmmmmmmm, This Present Darkness (Frank Peritee *Sp*) and then Peircing this Darkness by him too.
Eragon and Eldest were added earlier today. I'll try to add your suggestions soon, TNC.
Just added: The Foundation Trilogy (Asimov) and Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (T. S. Eliot)

The Word and the Void Series by Terry Brooks, The Old Kingdom Series and The Keys to the Kingdom Series. I'll think of more later.
Added the 7 UK versions of Harry Potter, Huck Finn, and the smallest and largest books in the world. :D
Next time I'll add the ones you guys suggested.
Added TNC's 4 suggestions.
Note: at the moment, the books may seem expensive, but that's because we're not to the point of doing a lot of critiquing yet.

Carraka! You're here! Yay! I'm happy :D.
And Andrew, stop adding books so I can actually do some of the work Mr.! Sheesh, you're doing far too much work as it is.
We need some non-fantasy suggestions guys. Maybe some little known works or stuff that just doesn't fit into genre.

Sci-Fi stuff? I can do that. I can just stare at my bookshelf, really.
Thanks for the suggestions (and especially the images!), Carraka. *Lets Shaun do work* :devious:

If you want non-Fantasy ones, I suggest Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses trilogy. It's a romance/thriller sort of thing, but it's not like that teen crap romance, it's realistic.

I'm not posting anything new until aSoIaF is added. However, two comments. In the profile section, it says that we've earned Icons. Can you change this to "Books Bought"?
Secondly, you may want to edit that you want that information into the first post of this thread. Most people won't be scrolling through all the other recommendations before adding their own, especially as this thread grows.

We can change it to books bought, but the reason it says icons is so guests don't mistakenly think members can earn real books from this site, or that they can simply list books they've bought in real-life. Plus, not everything in the store is a book.
Shaun, Car's other two points fall into your sphere. :)

Yeah yeah, I know. Sorry, I've been incredibly busy and stressed :S. I'll do it! Just, be patient!

Okay, all of the books mentioned should be up. If I missed some let me know, and feel free to make more suggestions. I updated the opening post to this too so there is the thing asking you guys to give me images. Large, high resolution images are best, and any relevant information to the book to help me categorize it!
So, start suggesting!

Links to images mister! Look at the first post for the thread and edit yours. It makes it easier for me to get the right sized image, get all the information, etc. So, go back and do that real quick :). If we start getting a LOT of submissions all at once it could take me hours to do it if I don't have the images :S. This way it takes me only an hour or so for 20 or 30 books.

This is not a suggestion. This is a comment.
Eagle Strike put me in depression for three days, because my favorite character died. Died, died, died--and after s/he died, the series was never the same. Nevertheless, I read on obsessively--I mean, I tried to--except I couldn't find Scorpia. Anywhere. In any bookstore, library, thing blah.
For ten weeks. Then I picked up George R. R. Martin. Thank you, Horowitz, for changing my life.
You've heard this story from me before, right?
Rafael Domination
10-31-2007, 02:36 AM
Yeah! I think so! :D
Actually, Scorpia put me in depression even more than Eagle Strike. That character who died in the Fourth book was also one of my faves, plus the ending too, but the ending in Scorpia was the worst...
:D
Carraka
10-31-2007, 02:40 AM
I didn't like how all that parent stuff worked out in Scorpia.
And by the time I finally read Scorpia, the next book had already come out, so the ending to that book was just annoying. Definitely not an example of cliffhanging at its finest. Then again, there's Brienne. What can I say?

I won't be posting new books after this until the quarter is fully over. Please make suggestions. Quarter ends on the 13th I think. After that I'm going to start going through big lists and adding books. Make all the suggestions you want though.
Edit:
Everything has been added in. So suggestions welcome again.

You should also add in some Poe, King, and Matheson.

Honey attracts more bees than vinegar.
A spoonful of sugar helps.
A kind word receives a kind reply.
To err is human, to forgive...
and finally
patience is a virtue :)
Ok, I'm done with the quotes for today.
Honey attracts more bees than vinegar.
The ironicy of this quote is that don't most people try to get RID of bees?:P

OMG! I'm so sorry Zomb. I was sitting around Sunday thinking I had something to do...I'm really very sorry. That was my fault. I should have written it down as something that had to be done.
I will do this Friday evening for you. Please forgive me!
I love the hint of sarcasm in Shaun's words, I know he isn't being sarcastic. I just thought I'd point that out >,<

Read the first post Scotty. I need images. Otherwise it takes me three hours just to hunt them all down myself and it takes forever to get things done :S. Links to images works of course :P.
I'm going to make adding books a weekly ritual, so please make suggestions every week guys.

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi- read the book before you watch the movie.
About: A memoir telling about Satrapi's growing up during the Islamic revolution in Iran. It's simply written and in graphic form. It gives readers a first-hand look at what life is like during a war and the effect politics have in the life of people.
(not sure if it was already suggested)
