Okay. For once and for all, I want to hear you ideas on using Chat Speak. I don't want to hear from you as writers, because you would obviously say that you don;t like it, I want to hear it from you as an avarage everyday person. I even wan to hear about what you think about the simple 'kk' or 'wuu2'. I generally don't use them and to be honest, I find chat speak 'messy'. I only use in cases where I have to be quick. And also, I have never in my life from when I was 11(until now) said Ok, but said, Okay. Ok just doesn;t look right. So, how about you?

I use it in chatrooms because it's a billion times easier. But, I'm kinda a amateur at it. I only know the basic chat speak like ttyl and w/e. It's easier and faster to use it but I try not to.

I'm lazy so I go for the occasional kk to make things move faster... I save a fraction of a second each time... and time is money... so I save money by chatspeaking in chats... that's why it's there :P
ok I'm done.
(And I always use ok... to me Okay doesn't look right. I don't know why, it's just strange)
I only use it on MSN because that's just what I'm used to for msn. But anywhere else, no. It is faster, and in msn, it's not you're ever gonna see it again. But on forums, it just makes a thread look ugly, and the writer of it lazy.

Eh, if I say anything it's "lol." When I'm on messengers, I still use proper grammar, though. No chatspeak from me.

I never liked chat speak, even before I wrote things. (I can hardly understand the stuff, so...) The only thing I ever use (and this is on a chat or something) is pretty much "brb". And I always use "okay". Looks better to be spelled out I think :p.

Only time I use chat speak, is when I'm making fun of chat speak.

Depends to what degree. In chatrooms, I don't use capitals, but I use all other punctuation and grammar. I can also speak leet and I use that on things like WoW cos its funny and everyone else can speak it. It's not chatspeak, its called netspeak sometimes, but its not proper words or grammar either.

I've never texted one phone message in my life, so chatspeak doesn't apply to me on that level. I do use it in my history notes, but I call it "shorthand" to coincide with my moral values. And the only time I use chatspeak when I instant message nowadays is if I'm a) trying to annoy someone or b) joking around with a friend on the stupidity of chatspeak. Chatspeak probably takes the same amount of effort for me as "regular?" speak, because for chatspeak, I have to figure out the abbreviations, and then force my fingers to form different words than they're used to.
Hmm -- back when I used to play MMORPGs 17 hours a day, I did use chatspeak (especially in-game), but I used it in conjunction with capitals and punctuation, so I still looked odd to most people.
Lizzie
11-10-2008, 04:32 PM
Yes, I would like to add that I use Lol and Brb and maybe Omg, sometimes, but I always capitilise, but as many of you know, most of the time, my spelling is crap, so yeah. That is another thing. I never say Yeh or Yes, I always say or write Yeah, and in that spelling. Hmmm....And I capitilse TOO much sometimes on messenger.

I guess the main point of that rant would be that chatspeak is pointless and reflects a certain lack in mental skills and/or a preference for expediency when ascertaining the quality of the writing itself in opposition to the degree of comprehension one receives for it.

I hate chatspeak, it's really annoying.
I like to spell things out and wrongly spelt words -- even one's I make -- feel messy to me too. I think chatspeak's a waste of time, like someone said, figuring out what it all says and then trying to write back must take ages. I can type quicker in 'normal' speak than I can read and understand chatspeak. Dio, it too my nearly four minutes to understand what you wrote . . . :P

I don't use it normally, I (to tell you the truth) only use it when I'm in a hurry or angry texting. It just looks and feels bad to me. I cannot stand the stuff in forums. They make me angry because the people were lazy and didn't add an 'e' to like. It seems stupid.
Thought I will admit that before I became a writer it was like the plague.I used it in everything from notes to my friends to texts to even normally talking. It was bad. But I repented and now very well try not to use chat speak.

The only time I really use chat speak is on a Chat. I mean, GTG is handy when you have to go right that second - same with BRB. But I don't use LOL and TTYL a lot. It's kind of annoying when people try to add chat speak to their conversations. :)

My friends use it ALOT on messenger, and it is REALLY annoying! I mean, REALLY. It sucks. They use stuff like:
Ite, and M8 and w.e and l8r and gdgd and wuu2 and also roflamoa, which I have no idea what it means. Elaborate someone! But I know what Lmfoa : It Laugh My Fucking Arse Out...
But atleast one of my friends, Danika, likes to use grammer, and she capitilizes much, which is what I like to do.

roflmao is a combination of rofl (rolling on the floor laughing) and lmao (laughing my ass off). So together it comes to mean something along the lines of "rolling on the floor laughing my ass off."

When the conversation goes nowhere, I just say "brb" and never come back.
I use it in texts because my fingers hurt if I type a long message. But in an IM, I don't REALLY use it. Sometimes just to joke around. I don't use punctuation though or capitalization in IMs.

I don't, I never do. I can't. like i cant write like this even tho i am now because it looks messi. My friends speak like this. ite. wuu2 kl hw r u? brb omg lol. ly w.e. ok. Yeah, I understood like, 2 of those words. I have to ask them to elaborate or not use it. They find NOT using chatspeak annoying. Wow, I have some chavvy friends haha.

I meant I sometimes lose the capitalization. I never use chatspeak like that. It'd take me so long to write it, it'd defeat the purpose. Which, I'm not sure of, actually. xD
Haha I know this is an old thread, but I want to have my say ^_^
I use the words "lol", "omg", "brb", "g2g" and "k" but that's it. To me chatspeak looks messy and takes soooo long to decipher. Oh, and I use words like "wanna" or something sometimes. I use emoticons more than chatspeak - to avoid chatspeak, like I'll use a :D smiley instead of "lol". But yeah, it defeats its purpose. I hate it when my friends use chatspeak, because I've spent so much of my life reading that my eyes skim across words easily, and when the words are retarded *coughchatspeakcough* my eyes have to stop and comb through the mess of letters, taking me three times as long to read. I'm lucky because half the people I talk to on messenger are writers, so they have the same hate. :D
It took me about two minutes to figure out what wuu2 meant...XD

here let me translate everything for you,
I do chatspeak occasionally on msn :P
Idk - I don't Know
Idc - I don't care
Wtf - What the f**k
Ftw - For the win
Lol - Laugh out loud
Rofl - Rolling on floor laughing
Lmao - Laughing my a***e off.
Lmfao - Laughing my f*****g a***e off
G.w - Guess what.
Can't be Arsed? HAHA!!!!!!! I've never heard of that one before; I know cbs which is Can't Be Stuffed. Had to ask what that one meant XD
Random chatspeak example from talking to my friend on msn the other day:

Shaun
01-11-2009, 08:39 PM
Because it's better they talk about chatspeak here and in the spam thread than everywhere else.
I rarely use chatspeak, to be honest. I'll do the occasional "lol" here or there, but Imelda has done a good job of kicking me off the habit of doing that all the time. Generally the only chatspeak I use now are emoticons (emotes, smilies, whatever). My personal opinion on chatspeak is that it needs to be reduced in the English language. I think it's given too many people an excuse to not epay attention to the rules of the language they speak and has created a generation of mentally incompetent people. "lol" isn't that big a deal, but all the reductions of words that come with texting and the like is a bane on this society, because it doesn't stop at texting. It moves into other arenas where competent use of language should dominate, such as here on YWO where we have several members that write in practically the same way they would if it were a text message. It's a problem for me because I generally like to have conversations with people, but it's difficult to do so when I have to decipher what is being said. Writing complete, or mostly complete sentences, with periods, correct punctuation, etc. is important and the only way you can learn how to write, read, and speak in English, or any language, is by doing it. You wouldn't expect us to trust you to fly an airplane without any experience, right? Same thing.

In chat rooms I don't tend to use chat speak unless I'm in a hurry or something. I always use capitals in chat rooms. I don't no why I just do it automatically without thinking about it. Seeing as my mobiles a touch screen I have a little keypad for texting, so I don't really use chat speak for that either. :)

Chat speak is always used, you can't help it when you're trying to type fast like in a chat. It's everywhere, and you can always make up your own. Most teenagers prefer it because it's 'cool' and easy and fast. I think one of the most often used are 'lol' for showing one's amusement, and 'k' or 'kk' for a quick ok. Those are convenient when chatting. I sometimes slip and use 'u' instead of 'you', too. ^.^" I understand the ones that shorten or abbreviate longer words or a phrase, but I can't stand the strange ones. Such as 'gurl' or 'boi' or 'sk8te', et cetera. They are completely pointless because they don't make the typing more convenient, and just are sp mistakes. Chat talk can also be bad if one used it too much because I had so many friends that are utterly used to chat speak, they started to write/type/talk that way everywhere and continue to spell words wrong.
Phew, okay, I'm done. :D

I think it really depends on whether you want to be a writer or not.
If you want to be a writer, then heavens please use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If you're serious about you're craft, you'll be willing to be professional. If you think in complete thoughts and proper grammar, then you'll write with proper grammar (in most cases). Why would you want to put effort into remembering how to spell "cool" wrong or "love" when you can just spell it the right way.
On the other hand, some people think it's snazzy xD And if you're not planning on becoming a writer or something in literature, feel free to do this.
Like Abe says "whatever you are, be a good one."

If you're serious about you're craft, you'll be willing to be professional.
And you'll also use the correct "you're" or "your", as well. xP Yeee! (Sorry. It was just begging me to point it out!)
And no. I don't chat-speak. All of my relatives are English teachers, so chat-speak just looks plain wrong to me. I usually use clean syntax, proper grammar and capitalisation. It's just what I do.
If I write lyk dis, and say i lyk dis, then usually I'm flinching at the keyboard and wondering when the lightning is going to hit me...
If you want to use chat speak on a writing site, set up your own chat speak based writing site. I'd like to see how well that does...

I always use proper capitals, grammar, spelling, etc. I wouldn't be caught dead removing vowels or replacing words with numbers, but occasionally I'll say something like "LOLOLOL" in informal conversations.
One of the many benefits of using proper grammar is being able to mock those who don't. :)

'Chat speak' was actually "made up" to save time. It was really stupid when first around bot now as we can see in today's society, it is really commonly used in texts.
I actually believe that some chat speak can really be confusing, like ntymi actually means "now that you mention it". I have only just learned that. And chat speak is not that big a problem compared to other things in my opinion. Like the word noob is now being used as a insult in many places and the word troll means to randomly post things. I dont really mind any of it anyways... i can decifer just about any chat speak or stupid new words, however, i just cant stand it when i hear somone saying 'lol' around me...its just stupid.... leave it to the text! srsly!

Lololol, this is a rather interesting topic.
I don't know, when I see chatspeak I feel genuinely angry at the person who has produced it. I've found that I'm quiet 50/50 with it, there's like the acceptable type of noob talk, and then there's the fucking vein popping horrors that make your eyes melt.
It annoys me when, say like some noob starts a facebook chat with you, and they're using noob talk, I always feel the need to dimish my grammar and vocabulary so I can fit in with the way they're speaking to me. After the aimless conversation ends I'll be so mad at myself for typing stupidly...

I don't like to use it. But if I'm feeling lazy or tired, and chatting with someone who uses it as their first language, then I don't mind. I guess the rule is pretty simple for me.
I don't hate anything, but this comes pretty close.
I don't mind too much the acronyms, (fyi, imo, wtf, ftw etc.), I myself use them sometimes,
but I could kill when I see shortened words. lk shrtnd wrds. nd stff lk ths.
I'm exaggerating; I don't really know how to write like that, but you get the point.
I damn near hate it.
and also writing without any sort of punctuation, that most of the times accompanies it.

I try to not, sure I will use stuff like WTF when text messaging to get a point across, if only to make sure no one gets yelled at because of the words it stands for as it is deemed bad by the parents. But I hate shortened words and the only one I will use is indeed WTF.
Everything else makes my head hurt, things such as 'OMG, i jst saw u @ the store u ddnt tlk 2 me!!!!!!!!!!!' I have to spend more time deciphering it then actual words, which is ridiculous in my opinion.
Things like all caps, excessive exclamations or questions, and extremely shortened words and symbols and numbers in the place of letters, gets on my nerves extremely easy, and I don't like it. I don't like it at all,
It's also very dangerous!!

Yeah, brb, fyi, gtg, and wtf; these I occasionally use but I'll usually just write them out. What I hate is 'no' for 'know' (and other things of that ilk, but this is worst). Multiple exclamation points bother me.

Not that I mind smiley faces. They add texture :D .
I find chatspeak, on the whole, lazy and immature.

I admit I don't understand my mum's or great aunt's text messages. I'm green to chatspeak, except for the smiley faces :)
The first time I was in the chatroom I remember someone said: brb. I stared at it and thought: what???? Now I say that myself.

I think that my opinion is the same as of most of you guys -- use some abbreviations, but chtspk gets on my nerves! It's so hard to decipher!!!
I only use it when I need to text something very quickly.

Maybe... when I'm texting. But that's it.

This thread is so old, and doesn't need to keep getting bumped anymore.
