Out of pure curiosity, how many of you like Anime? I don't mean Pokemon or whatever other stuff is being played on Saturdays now. I mean real Anime. Naruto, Evangelion, etc.
Anyone go to any conventions?

No, never been to a convention. Anime was kin of ruined for me caus eone of my friends copied me with it....like really. She took all of my drawings, analyzed the f*ck out of them and did her own. Now she's really good and I don't want to take that away from her, but she'd uber competitive so I don't talk about it so much to her.
But anyways I like to watch:
Naruto
Gundam SEED/Destiny (I know okay shutty)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Tales of Symphonia
SAILOR MOON!<3:D
[add more later]
Fullmetal Alchemist and InuYasha, though I've only seen a few episodes of each. Also Avatar: TLA.
Basically, if an anime is not full of all those people flying through poses which they recycle through every single episode, and the episodes are chronological, I tend to like it. Quality anime, that's it.

I can't stand the anime for Naruto, but the Manga is awesome!
I started out on Gundam, so don't feel bad. My first anime experience was Gundam Wing, and that is one of the best Gundam series ever!
I'm also really partial to:
Gasaraki
Love Hina
Kashimashi
The Place Promised In Our Early Days
Crest of the Stars
Banner of the Stars
Banner of the Stars II
Blue Seed
Umm, and I have something like 150 anime DVDs, some of which I haven't watched yet. I go to FanimeCon every year--for three years now. Amazing convention :D
Edit: Oh I like FMA!!! But only in the original Japanese. I can't stand the U.S. dub...it's something you pick up by going to conventions. U.S. dub is almost always crap...
150?! Are you...rich? :O
I never really got into Naruto. I think it's all the filler episodes that turned me away, though I've seen a couple of really good ones.
Ichigo, where's your avatar from? It keeps catching my eye.

Well I'm not actually sure WHO it is...I'd like to belive it's Colette from Tales of Symphonia, which is a game I have....and they're making an animation on it so I guess I can go and add that to my list now.

No, I just save up my money for FanimeCon every year and fork out about $800 on stuff. You should see my Gundam model collection. I spend $300 one year on just models. I am just a manga and anime junkie. Unfortunately I don't have anyone to watch it with and my girlfriend, if she were here in the states, isn't into anime. So I'm rather out of luck.
Andrew, are you into manga at all? If you like graphic novels, try the one for Naruto. I got into it through the manga, but I can't stand the animation because they just make Naruto so annoying. Then again, Naruto unfortunately follows the Dragonball Z path...lots and lots of filler without any resolution. It just goes faster in the manga :P.
You should try Gundam Wing. It's only 49 episodes, but it goes through SO MUCH in those episodes. It's amazing. Plus they made a movie for it that extended the ending even further. *swoons* I love it. I don't know if you'd like Gasaraki though. It doesn't have a lot of filler, but it's highly philosophical, which a lot of anime is, and very difficult to grasp for a lot of people...but it's awesome too.
Goodness, we should talk man, I've got so many awesome anime shows!
I never really got into manga, but if it's good, I'm willing to give it a shot. For entertainment, and for inspiration.
Awesome, Ichigo! I played that game also! The entire two-worlds plot was very cool, and the initial reason why I bought the game.

Well I guess it would be hard to give you an example of a really good manga :S. A lot of them follow the same general ideas...but if you aren't really into it you probably won't like any of it. I would be hard pressed to find something that not only I like, but would be so perfectly amazing that you would like it too.
But, you're lucky because a lot of manga is turned into anime :D. More so in Japan though. You'd be surprised how much stuff never makes it over here even though it should!

OH MY GOD.
Saturdays. NO APOSTROPHE. I may have to have serious words with you about this. It cannot go on ...
Ichigo

Oh Wow...I've never met anyone who has actually played it before. Thats just so awesome! But going through the game a cuple times I've notcied lots of glitches and what not.

Anime is cool, but I've never watched any anime shows, except Dragonball Z. Is that even anime? I used to watch it when I was 6-8, but the new episodes of it just confused my little brain so I moved on. I'm interested in Naruto, but never watched it, which annoys me because none of the channels even on Sky have it. :glare:

DBZ is anime Shadow, but it's sort of Americanized anime. The good stuff is the stuff that Toonami/Cartoon Network or any of the major networks don't play...Naruto, unfortunately, is a really crappy anime, but a great manga...

What is the different? I've never understood the difference.
Shaun
11-06-2007, 06:10 PM
The difference is that good anime is still in raw form, meaning it hasn't been dubbed by large American networks, commercialized to hell, and paraded around on television like mad. True anime is stuff that may be popular, but hasn't been molested of its artistic value by America.

My first anime was YuYu Hakasho and 3 x 3 Eyes. Then it was Inyuasha and Shohen Jump comic books, followed by some anime about a red haired swordsman in fedual japan.
Then I realized anime was stupid. Or maybe that's cause I'm black, and around here, we get out of it around 11. Then your just a freak.

Basically, anything mainstream isn't anime anymore?

The red-haired swordsman show you mentioned is probably Samurai X or its comical offshoot Rorouni Kenshin. Both are wonderful shows and thankfully the English dub for both isn't horrible. Samurai X is absolutely amazing though.
I do think I need to rephrase. What I mean by them not being anime is that they aren't 'true, raw anime', but commercialized and often overly advertised garbage. If you look at what gets on actual network TV you'll see the same basic plots repeated over and over, yet you don't see anything that suggests Japanese culture in depth, or Japanese philosophy, which in and of itself is simply amazing. So stuff that is mainstream is still anime, but if America commercializes it like it did with Pokemon and DBZ, it ceases to be a raw product.
And there's nothing wrong with loving anime. I'm 24 and I love it. I don't care if people think I'm an idiot. Some of it is awesome.
DBZ is japanese, so it can't be american unless dubbed can it?
Anyway, does no-one love bleach? It's the best anime ever, besides that its Full Metal Alchemist.

i second that

R. Kenshin. That what it was. I was going to say Macaroni Kenshin, but it sounded to off. Wait, is your girlfriend Japanese or something?
Shaun

Jaza, I just meant that works like DBZ are Americanized--i.e. turned into commercial enterprises while the artistic value is lost.
I've never seen Bleach but I really want to :(.

No, my GF isn't Japanese, otherwise she'd likely love anime if she were from Japan :P. No, she comes from a magical place where the hills are green and bridges fall down. Obscure nursery rhyme references are wonderful :P.

HAHAHA!!! I never thought this discusion would come up!!! Anime is one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to writing. However, I'm not one of those diehard fans that dress in costumes and go to conventions. My favorite one are: Inuyasha, Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, Evangelion, R. Kenshin, Trinity Blood, Big O, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Get Backers, Ghost in the Shell, Tenchi, OutLaw Star, Gundam Wing, Bleach, and about 7 more that I don't feel like naming. But all the one's I've listed above are either ones that I've completely watched(along with movies) or ones that I've kept up to date with.^_^:D

OMG! Death Note! They premiered the live-action version at FanimeCon this year and there was a massive line. I got to see both movies for it! Which is crazy because some 10,000 people didn't! And it was wicked awesome. I had never heard of it until I went there. I'm having a lot of problems keeping up with all the new big things in Japan. I don't have an anime group or anything to go to here in SC :(.
Ghost in the Shell = absolutely awesome movie.
Tenchi Muyo: how could I forget this one? This is an example of a show that used to be on Cartoon Network before CN and the other networks started turning into commercialized garbage channels. Yes CN used to play good anime!
Get Backers: Another I really like!
Outlaw Star: Never got into it, but then I never watched it because I was always in class when it was on.
Did anyone here like Cowboy Bebop before the U.S. destroyed it? I love that show, brilliant writing.
I'm rambling!
I've never dressed up, but I've always wanted to go as something that isn't really anime. Just something fun. But I've never wanted to do it as something serious, just something to goof off about with my friends. It would be neat to get my friends together and all dress up as characters from the same show. It would have been cool if my friend and I went as Mario and Luigi and then my brother went as Wario or something!

Cowboy Bebop was also another one of my favorites. One of my favorite characters was ED, the hacker genius. She was hilarious!!

I'm more into reading manga now....but I have seen quite a bit of anime. I like physchological or humor stuff...also gore. =3 But it has to have an interesting plot and characters...and a point. Symbolism in anime and manga also makes me happy. Three cheers for Evangelion and Ergo Proxy.:P
