Which one for you took the longest?

I feel like publishing would take longer, if I ever got past editing.

So I picked editing.

Plus, publishing would only have a length if I ... actually got published! Otherwise, it would just be an indefinite period in which I send query letter upon query letter until I either give up or become smothered by carbon monoxide.

I have a total of one thing that is anywhere close to "finished," and as it is still stuck in the editing phase, I said editing. In terms of my novel-that-originally-showed-some-potential-of-me-finishing-it-but-now-I-don't-know, well *shrug* I decided I don't really have all the ideas I need after all.

For me it's probably the first draft. Editing goes smoothly. I really try to make sure the first draft isn't crummy (though it's far from perfect), which is probably the reason.

First draft for me too, and pretty much for the same reasons as Andy.

For me, editing takes f*$@#@$ing forever.

I have no motivation when I edit, especially when I need to cut parts out, add new things in, etc.

I basically know the story already, so it feels like there's no point in refining it.

I would say publishing, but I don't know yet. So I'll go with editing. For the same reason as Scotty. I have to literally force myself to re-write parts or it'll never happen.

Writing the first draft.
I actually like editing, but I can't edit right after I write a part. Usually I wait about three weeks to edit, because then I'll be able to catch more.
I'm very grateful to have found this site...the people here help me out so much. xP

I hate research, it takes me forever, that may be because I have self diagnosed ADD.... I can't keep on task...

Editing is always the hardest part. You have to want to do it. If you don't want to, then you won't.

I have that problem.

Is that how it works? No wonder I haven't edited all week xD

It would be the first draft for me, although I spent a lot of time editing and re-editing it!

Wait... do you mean the last thing I published? I've never published anything.
Editing... so many drafts...

First draft. I have no trouble with ideas, I usually don't need to do much research, I've never published anything, and editing isn't that bad (plus, I like reading my work over again. When I get distracted, I love looking back and wondering what author I'm reading before I realize it's me). I love writing, but I hate going on and on in the middle when I have such a good idea for an ending.

I hate (can't stress it enough) editing. So as a good, responsible writer, I just don't do it.
Okay, I do edit my stories but I never do any major changes. I've learnt to be extremely careful when writing first drafts, to avoid having to spend lots of time editing them.
So my answer is first draft.
