So, I want to write a story that seemingly revolves around cliches but takes them deeper into reality. Cliches exist because they exist in real life, right?

Like, for example, extremely gay best friend.

Until he almost gets beaten to death by homophobes. Cliche. . .my attempt at stressing the reality.

Has this been done before? And what is the best way to do this without it coming off as crappy and. . .cliche, >.<

I think the things that make cliches come off as cliches is that they are based on soley that. For example if you bunch of disney valentines tv shows and go and write your own version, it'll sound unoriginal because you're going off someone else's idea. As long as you write based on your imaginations and experience then you can almost always be sure that it'll come out unique, as soon as you factor in ideas that you have read about/ heard about/ etc, you lose your originality.
So if that's the subject you want to write about and you have enough info, experience and imagination to back it up then go for it because it'll probably turn out great! ^^

Thanks, that actually makes a lot of sense. I'll have to think about that when I'm writing instead of sleeping, >.<

I think cliches are cliche because they've been "overdone" by the literary/film/art/creative world, at least at the time of their writing. Cliches have become predictable to the point of boring and common to the point of eye-rolling.

Basis in reality has nothing to do with it. I have heard of your idea in real life ... -claws something- which is extremely upsetting, but that's no reason not to write about it. In fact, it's a reason to write about it. As for whether it's done before -- I've never heard of it being done. If you've thought of it, it probably has been done, but it hasn't sparked a movement of similar spin-offs. So yeah. You're safe, and I wish you all luck in approaching a sensitive topic and making it your own.
