Oh, God, you should not have posted this for me to see, Andrew.
...
Just joking. I'm over my naiveness (a word?). Maybe in the the distant future when I have some stubble, messy long hair and my face is thinner I'll post.

Should not have posted what? The site, or this thread?
Messy long hair is one of my current goals for fun. Unfortunately, I see my parents once every 2 weeks at college, and unfortunately they'll probably put a stop to it soon.

I have a few suggestions, but they aren't all that relevant. Mostly about the site's appearance.

Ok, so, I decided to add these photos of my team on our Duke of Edinbrugh final expedition. They're snapshots from a video, so no, I'm not that sad to take pictures of these guys and me. I would post the video, but it would just be a major embarassment (because, as you'll see, we're all geeks) and it's over 20 minutes long.
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa211/DeathAndDusted/Snapshot.jpg
Me, climbing over a fence. Little did I know my boots were very muddy and I slipped off and slammed my stomach into one of the bars. Very painful.
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa211/DeathAndDusted/Snapshot02.jpg
Me, later going under the fence after throwing my bag over. It wasn't hard, it's just I'm laughing very hard because when I threw my bag over it landed on the head of one of my teammates when he was crawling under.
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa211/DeathAndDusted/Snapshot03.jpg
This is Josh. Yeah, as you can see, he's a big fan of the Army. I don't see why he brought the sunglasses, though. It was cloudy...
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa211/DeathAndDusted/Snapshot04.jpg
Our team expert on Gaydom. Yes, it's Tom H, and he is gay... and very weird among over things. Big fan of High School Musical... and dances... often dances and sings randomly... can't do either very well.
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa211/DeathAndDusted/Snapshot_1.jpg
And our team computer genius and World of Warcraft addict, Matthew! Always a laugh.

In the first picture it looks like my eyes are closed and my teeth are stuck out, but it's just the bad quality. As is some of the weird faces of my friends.
So you slipped due to mud and then decided to crawl through the mud? :P
Anyhow, neat photos. It's good to know you're not a bum. :)

Eh, I have no objection to the fact that the British invaded land that wasn't their own (though, technically, it wasn't a country). But if we based what we do today on what was done in the past by legitimizing actions by the actions of people in the past, then we could very well just do any damn thing we wanted to. Kill the jews because Hitler did it. We should make blacks into slaves again, cause people did that too. Let's massacre Christians or string up millions of people who don't share a certain political viewpoint, because someone else did it. Or, on a more simplistic level: "Well, because you did cocaine, heroine, meth, and pot, I can do it all I want to, even if it is illegal". Or "I can rape women cause someone else did it" or "I can steal candy cause someone else did". You see where I'm going with this? Just because someone else did it doesn't mean that you should too.

I'm not saying it's fine to do it Shaun, I'm saying what exactly is the difference?
Shaun
06-16-2008, 05:18 AM
My question would be: why does there have to be a difference? If it's wrong...it's wrong.

The "slippery slope" is not a considered a legitimate arguing technique (in fact, it is considered by logicians to be an informal fallacy). All that is silly.
And the cartoon is just being silly. It's just pointing out an interesting parallel.
In response you can make a cartoon with American braves scalping immigrants and the immigrants saying, "If they didn't want us here, why didn't they build a wall?" Or something actually clever.
Edit: Or suggest that immigrants give metaphoric "diseased blankets" to job seekers.
Shaun

It's not a slippery slope argument. It's simply pointing out that we shouldn't do things because other people have done them.
And I know the cartoon was funny, but George posted with an ulterior motive :P, since we've been discussing illegal immigration as of late :P.

If that was in the debate room, I must have stayed out of it. I'm kind of apathetic to it and don't really have a solid opinion. Like, because it doesn't really effect me directly and I wouldn't say it's immoral (illegality =/= immorality), so I don't have an opinion about it. I guess I'd support a well-regulated guest worker program and I don't think the wall and land mines are necessary (counter-productive, wastes money and they're actually pretty easy to get around)
It can be considered along the basic lines of a slippery slope argument, if it doesn't fit the exact criteria. Like, you are saying "if you validate a present wrong with a past wrong, then you can start validating other present wrongs with other correlating past wrongs." And that is the basic premise of a slippery slope argument. "If you do x, then people will start doing y."
Shaun

I guess you're right on the slippery slope bit, but I'm not backing down on it nonetheless. The Animal Rights movement folks (Animal Liberation Front for example) use the violence of the past as a validation for what they do today, which I think basically proves that they aren't willing to consider other means to dealing with the animal problem. As soon as you start doing that, it sends up red alert lights for me, because it's arguing the very thing I was arguing: "someone else did it, so I can too and you can't get pissed at me for it".
And no, it was a discussion George and I had on MSN. I don't know if we've adequately discussed the immigration issue (edit: on YWO I mean). I'm against illegal immigration under any circumstances, but I do support guest worker programs and trying to lighten up current regulations (granted, all people SHOULD get background checks and we should be careful who we let in, but making it a bit easier for people wanting to work to come here and do jobs people don't want, I don't see a problem UNLESS our economy is in a significant slump).
Anyway, maybe we should get back to whatever this thread was originally for :P

Building walls show weakness. The Great Wall of China was made to isolate everyone from the rest of the world. Hadrian's wall was made to keep out the barbarians.
Shaun

Yes and both those walls are pretty. If we build a pretty wall it'll be okay.

It doesn't really matter, they'll always find a way around it.
We should make an obstacle course.

Not if we put attack dogs, landmines, laser guided missiles, and evil robots. If they get past that I say we hand them a Green Card and say, "Welcome to America." Cause anyone who survives that deserves to be here.
