View Full Version : Longer Crits!

I fail at titling threads.

Anyways, a lot of people have been noticing/complaining lately that a lot of new people on the site who don't really know what they're doing have been giving crits along the lines of "This was really great, keep writing!" (minus the correct grammar and capitalization) just to get their points up to where they can post more of their own stuff. This can get really irritating to those of us who are looking for helpful feedback on our writing, not random useless compliments.

So. My suggestion is that there be a minimum word and/or character limit for posts in literature threads. It doesn't have to be that high, so that someone who wants to give a paragraph response or something instead of a line-by-line critique can still be fine, but a critiquer has to say something constructive in order to post at all.

I know that this kind of messes up the crit ticket system, but you can easily just do crit tickets as PMs or profile comments. It might even be easier to remember/remind people of them if they're not in the thread itself.

Someone suggested I make a thread for this, so what does everyone think?

Sounds like a good idea to me. =)

I don't mind, because even my crit tickets would probably meet the minimum requirements. I'm waay too verbose.

This post really proves that.

Maybe that limit could only apply to newer or non-active members? Because once a member is old and active, we know if they contribute or not so what's the point?

I've sent an email to Andy with an idea I have that would make it so the minimum word count, but I agree that something does have to be done. No one liner critiques should be allowed. I think we've become too secure with the new system and haven't paid attention to what is going on...

Perhaps stricter policies regarding short non-crits would be beneficial?

I deleted a lot of one liner crits over the last few days and every time I come online I have something new to fix or delete.

I'm sick of it...

If we can make it so that these people can't write, "OMG it was a greit stori. Like seriosli! WOW! O. M. G!", I will be very happy.

The problem with character limits is that it limits the critiquer from doing line-by-line crits with the quote function (I think). I'm all for it, but I think that for poetry critiques and for line-by-lines it might not be the best way to go about it. ((I'm taking credit for posting this before =p))

:D I totally noticed like a few hours after posting this that you did (this was while I was at camp, so I claim no responsibility for not knowing) and everyone rejected it. Which only proves that the situation has gotten worse. :P So now it's necessary?

And I think this could still be done with line-by-line, either just counting the quote as words or counting the bold/underlined/colored text the way the points system does. Though the word limit probably should be different for different types of writing. There just usually isn't as much to write about poetry or experimental writing because there's less words to start out with.

One solution would be that only posts worth XX points or more would get points. Like say, you only get points if your post has 200 characters (2 points) or more.

I think that it is a good idea myself...

NO! Use caps, and punctuation! What has become of our Grammar Goddess?! :(

Sounds good to me.

That sounds good. I never use my points anyway, but that could work.

*dies* Don't even JOKE like that.

I like the idea. Anything to prevent people from saying "THIS IS GOOD! THANK ME THEN CRIT ME!" minus the good spelling.
I'm really getting tired of it. I see that I have a new critique and I get all excited, but then am disappointed to see that it's just "keep writing. Is good."

Didn't I post something here? Why was it deleted?

Shaun

It was deleted because you were insulting another writing website and we really should try to cut that stuff out around these parts.

We can still diss YWO, though, right?

YWO SUCKS!

Thank you for deleting my post where I connected this discussion to a different thread in which Shaun went off about how he does not tolerate the word "cunt". I'm glad I made one person laugh enough to reply to my post.

Awww, where did edible YWO go?

But seriously, are we going to do this, or not (before this discussion degrades even more)?

We're working on something for sure, starry. Not sure if it will be exactly what you all are asking for, but we will be making some changes. We just want to make sure that our changes won't punish people who do things correctly around these parts, because that's one of the things I hate about politics and I don't really want that to happen here if we can help it.

Update on this: The staff is discussing this. What will likely happen is that critiques with less than 1 or 2 points will receive no points, and we will also enable critics to choose between "comments" and "critiques", in the same way the author can currently choose between "this is more of my work" and "I'm just posting some comments"
