or the OMR as it can be seen, this is a club where people can get together and share their movie reviews, thoughts, help people write reviews, argue over whether or not a movie was good, make top best or worst films and compare them with others and basically all general movie talk. Let's see if there are several movie buffs here on young writers.
We can start talking when there are more people than just me :)
Join now movie lovers.

I'll join! Although I haven't gone to the movies recently... I think the last one was Transformers.
Did you read the sticky in the Common Room? It explains how you can get members to have this club show up on their profiles.

Yeah I read it, I need 5 people to make it an official club and have it appear on the profiles. but what I don't know, since you joined is that two people (you and I) or just you?
One person beside you joined. So, four more.

I don't watch that many movies these days. In fact, I don't watch much TV at all. This means I'm very out-of-touch with all my friends, so it's a bad thing.
A BAD THING I TELL YOU. Can I still join? I can attempt to review movies I have watched.
GeorgeMichael

Of course you can still join, this club is for anyone. You should have watched at least one movie in your life however, so it's for everyone basically!
Can I join? I watch a movie almost every week-end (which isn't a very good thing) but anyhow... I'd love to join:D

First RPG for this club, other people can join as well into the RPG but it is supported by this club. It's in the Co-Op writing, genre= Horror. Go and test your teenage wit and brains to try and survive the horror, no pun intended, that awaits you...
Let's see who survives, and if it becomes an interesting story :)

I joined the RP, and I sent my request to be officially added.

Ok, so we have our RPG in progress, When it's done perhaps I'll make a new one in a different movie genre... anyways. Now for this thread!
For this day, (which includes tomorrow since it's late where I am right now) we can have discussions, so here are some things to start off with. It will be horror in honor or the recent Halloween and the Horror RPG.
Daily Poll (one every day, just vote, not really important, just for fun)
November 3: Favorite Horror movie out of these five?
Psycho
The Exorcist
Halloween
The Shining
Jaws
Daily Competition. (each day I will post up a clue for a movie, first person to guess the movie, you may post yes or no questions for me to try and figure it out faster, gets a point. With five points you will receive an official reward, which will most likely be one of those bookstore items. ( I guess I better start critiquing a lot so I can afford it.) SO prepare your Horror Movie memories and try to tell me what horror movie this quote is from.
"You might have told me that in my office and saved me the trip down here."
Good luck.
And of course all movie reviews, questions, and discussions are welcomed and appreciated. :)

Anyone think it's possible to have a Sub-Forum made for this club under Book Reviews where we can submit movie reviews. That way if anyone actually wrote one then they could just post it in the sub forum instead of here, I wonder if that can be done, if it can't I suppose I could just make a thread for it.
Shaun

For now I think we should just make a thread. The group isn't popular enough yet. If it gets down to it and things are so fast paced it's impossible to keep up on one thread, then Andy and I will have a talk about it.

First Movie Review! But first some Announcements.
The Horror Movie RPG is over (wasn't that fast) and it ended with... well you decide how it ended, it was definately odd, but apparently I, who was supposed to be the bad guy, died without even killing anyone but I gave someone short term memory loss for a while. Anyways, if you missed the Horror Movie RPG (or if you didn't) then there's no need to worry now a new RPG is open with the name of Comedy behind it. Go and try to be funny in that RPG that promises to be a lot longer and quite possible never ending.
Now the Movie Review. I'll give my Review on the movie Superbad in honor of the comedy RPG.
Superbad
Superbad is a movie about two teenage boys who want to get with the girls they like before they finish high school, sound familiar? Well it is. There have been so many teen comedies lately all using the same crude jokes and cussing trying to make us laugh, the only difference in between movies like those and Superbad is that Superbad does it right.
Amidst all of the penis jokes and porn site reference the two main characters, Seth and Evan, have a definitive bond between them and you see that between all their bickering and arguing. Evan is a relatively shy kid and Seth is basically a loud mouth who says anything he wants to say when he wants to say it.
The whole movie plays out during the timeline of one day and it is incredible all the things that happen. Of course following Seth and Evan on their crazy attempts to get alcohol would be pretty bland if they were the only people involved in the movie, so the movie introduces to us three of the funniest characters.
Fogell, a “friend” of Seth and Evan gets a Fake ID that day so the two tell him to get them some liquor for the party to which they’ve been miraculously invited to. Everything seems like it’s going to be fine until Seth and Evan doubt the ID when they see Fogell has changed his name to McLovin, yes, just McLovin.
When buying the liquor the ID goes through but the store is then mugged which introduces two cops played by Seth Green and Bill Hader. These cops are hilarious in the fact that they say they will drive Fogell to his party and in the meantime they brake about more laws than crooks. It is nonetheless funny when they hear sirens and all go running yelling “The Cops!”
This movie has great laughs and even sometimes goes to a point where you might gag a little. How the writers thought up of some of the things these kids go through is beyond me, but it works. Superbad is easily one of the funniest movies of the year so far and one of the greatest Teen movies ever. I’d like to thank Judd Apatow for reviving to me the comedy genre. I give Superbad a well deserved 4/5.
Good review. I haven't seen it, since there's not really a theatre within walking distance, but I've heard a lot about it, and this review helped to clarify a lot. Thanks!

Here's another movie that I thought was good, most people probably haven't seen it since it was limited but you should check it out if you have the chance.
Gone Baby Gone
Gone Baby Gone is an excellent film starring Casey Affleck, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman. It is a drama movie about two detective type people (played by Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan) who are hired to find a young girl that was recently kidnapped. It takes place in Boston and it is a wonderful heart wrenching film that had me constantly thinking about what was going to happen next.
The two detectives are hired to help find the girl by the little girl’s aunt; they are hired by her because as they soon find out the mother is a drug addict who seems like she couldn’t care less about her child missing. We then learn that she had stolen some money earlier on and that the person she stole it from might have been the abductor of her child. Through several twists and turns Casey and Monaghan are paired up with Ed Harris and another officer to escort them across their investigation, although the chief, played by Morgan Freeman, does not exactly like that they are around and is not too optimistic on actually finding the child dead or alive.
The acting here is phenomenal, both Affleck and Monaghan shine in their performances although I feel that Monaghan’s character shows no true purpose until the very end of the film which is excellent so I will not spoil it here. Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman also do their respectable roles well and Freeman is so convincing that he is one of the main reasons I sat in the theater thinking about this movie at the end.
This movie was of course directed by Ben Affleck, who is Casey Affleck’s brother, and he does it very, very well. Ben Affleck might be a small eye sore when watching him on the screen but one cannot deny his artistic creativity when he’s behind the camera. Ben Affleck also helped write the screenplay to this film and I believe that this may lead to another Oscar for Ben.
Gone Baby Gone is an exceptionally well made movie with a great plot and I view it as one of the best movies I’ve seen all year. I highly recommend it to all fans of the drama genre though I must warn you that there is excessive language in the film but it’s rightfully there of course. The movie has its twists and turns, most of them are pretty good and unexpected, and overall I give this movie a perfect 5/5.

Reviews incoming (I saw two last weekend).
Saw IV
Generally I am pretty much apprehensive about seeing sequels, and especially about seeing sequels some two or three movies into a series. The Saw series has to be the only series that takes horror to a level that has never been done before. Each of the movies preceding this one were linked together almost seamlessly, and that is no different for this one.
This fourth installment covers the events before and after Saw III. It tells the story about how Jigsaw became the murderous psychopath, and it also shows just what happened to some of the characters that were never fully cleared up in the third installment. Jigsaw, however, is dead, but his legacy lives on in a new 'apprentice'. The interesting thing about this is how they left this film open just enough to actually have a fifth film. Everything is still orchestrated by Jigsaw, because this fourth installment follows events that take place right before he died in the third film and right after it.
One thing that I think people don't get in this film is that there are three time lines. The main period of time occurs immediately before Jigsaw dies in the third film, following the police department from which the cop in the second film is from--he shows up in the third and we all assume that he is dead. One of the police officers is obsessed with finding his missing comrades because everyone around him keeps dying. The female cop that had her ribs pulled out in a previous film is the opening to this storyline.
The second time line, which is noticeable and clear, is the Jigsaw line. We learn a little about his past and the events that eventually turned him into the person we know him as. It chronicles his relationship to his wife and the loss of their child. The last time line apparently has confused people. People ask "how is Jigsaw's body in two places at one". That's because the opening to the film, in which we see his dead body, is actually in a different time from everything else. It's the 'actual' present. After the initial scene it jumps back in time to before Jigsaw's death and follows all the way to his death, but through a different course of actions by different characters.
Needless to say, this is the most complex horror series I've ever watched. It never ceases to amaze me in how deep and connected it is. For instance, one thing my brother noticed was that a very minor character that ends up in Saw II as one of Jigsaw's victims, is actually in a scene in this film, in the far past of Jigsaw. That's rather wild.
The gore, I think, is a bit excessive in some areas, but certainly not as bad as Hostel. I enjoyed the film through and through, though, and in the end I was thinking to myself "how do they keep doing that so well?"
Fred Claus
Ahhh, yes, well this apparently has received mixed reviews. My recommendation: don't see this film unless you can do it in quiet. Sounds obvious right? Well, I would have enjoyed this film a lot more if not for the fact that there were some dozen or so annoying little kids bouncing around, talking in Spanish, and basically being inconsiderate. Not to mention, their bastard parents didn't do anything about it, which disgusts me.
But as for the film. Basically the premise is that way back when, when Santa Claus was born, he had an older brother named Fred. Well, Santa keeps on-upping his brother; Fred's parents give him little to no attention, and focus almost all their attention to Santa. Inevitably, Fred gets angry, he rejects his family, and then we're in the future when both are 30 year old men. Fred lives in a big city, and, well, Santa lives in...the North Pole. When Fred gets in trouble with the law he calls up his brother and cons his brother to helping him and in exchange give him some money for a business venture. But Santa makes one condition: Fred has to come visit and work in the 'shop'.
Okay, the story itself I think is a little silly, obviously, but it's Christmas...The opening to the movie probably could have been ignored. You could have just had the narrator give a small paragraph about Fred to explain the situation. It was sort of 15 minutes of wasted film, especially since the kid who played Santa should be shot anyway.
Outside of that, the story works wonderfully. There is some serious tension, some funny moments, and generally a lot of cute scenes. I actually really liked this film. It worked really well, and Paul Giamatti and freaking Santa is awesome!
The one downside for this film are the computer graphics. I'm sorry, but in the day and age that we are in, I shouldn't be able to tell that you are using CG for simple things such as false perspective. If the people of LOTR can do it, so can the people of Fred Claus. You could pretty much tell from start to finish that all the elves, most of them at least, were CGed composites of normal heads on CG bodies. That's just a huge no-no to me...
If you can get by the bad CG, there is a wonderful story here, and it's funny! It's not the greatest film in the world, but it's a lot better than those Tim Allen Santa flicks...

I shall write formal reviews later but I would like to recommend the following movies I have recently seen to my fellow young writers. I'll put (highly) next to the ones that, obviously, I highly recommend.
American Gangster (highly)
Enchanted (HIGHLY!!!) This was a real pleasant surprise for me

Stress. Parenthood.
Anyway... American Gangster was the shiznit. I wish T.I. had a more prominent role since I enjoyed ATL.
And GM, why do you watch so many chick flicks that are like set up in high schools? Just curious, are you in high school?
GeorgeMichael
11-24-2007, 02:26 AM
Yeah I'm in high school but I just like to watch a lot of films, but none of the ones I recommended were high school movies.
I wrote a review for Superbad and I watched that because I'm a Judd Apatow fan but I tend to stay away from movies like High School Musical and stuff like that.
Oh, and I just watched Fast Times because I heard good things about it.
Maybe I do watch a lot of high school movies, but I guess it's just a part of the types of movies I watch.
Also I do enjoy the occasional well made chick flick or one that entertains me such as Enchanted, Just Like Heaven, or Legally Blond.
I just like pretty much all types of movies...except documentaries for the most part, I liked Super Size Me, but that's about it.
Enchanted is out already? -yay- I'll probably go watch that soon then.

You people would pay money to see that? Just save up for the blockbuster...
I AM LEGEND.
Hmm..well I haven't gone to watch a movie for a while now, in the summer theater is basically my second home:D Now I miss it. So I am definetly goin to see enchanted next weekend.
GeorgeMichael
11-25-2007, 04:02 AM
Well I was looking forward to I Am Legend until I heard about the whole vampire thing, I think I'll wait for it on DVD.
Plus my family wants to watch National Treasure 2 so we're probably going to watch that on the same weekend.
Shaun
11-25-2007, 04:18 AM
They're only sorta vampires. I don't think they're traditional vampires, as in characters like Dracula. You could probably consider them along the lines of the 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later zombies: infected humans who have little reasoning power, but desire only to feed. I plan to see it because it's based on a book and the book is supposed to be good, plus it looks really good.
And I really want to see National Treasure 2...I just hope it doesn't suck seeing how it is a sequel...

12-03-2007, 01:55 AM
Ok, here's my review :)
Enchanted
If ever a movie delighted me as much as Enchanted did then I would love to remember what it was. The film stars Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and the eccentric Amy Adams in one of the most fun and upbeat movies of the year. The film is set at first in an animation world until the young girl Giselle meets Prince Edward and he declares that they will be married at once. The evil queen, played by Susan Sarandon, sees Giselle as the one who will remove her from her thrown so she sends Giselle, on her wedding day, down a portal to a land where, as she puts it, there are no happily ever afters. That place is of course real world, New York.
Once in the real world Amy Adams desperately tries to return to her own world but of course she is unable to. In New York after a night of horrible mistreatment she meets up with Patrick Dempsey’s character and ends up going with him, him being the only person who has shown her any kindness. The film revolves around these two characters as Giselle waits for Prince Edward, who is meanwhile searching for Giselle in New York alongside a chipmunk and a henchman of the Queen who is devout in making sure Edward and Giselle never find each other.
In a role that could have been played lazily by any actress, Amy Adams beautifully shines as the princess in what is definitely her career defining role. She takes the princess in the real world to a whole new level that makes her so believable as a princess yet you notice her change as she descends further and further into reality. This performance is so well that I in fact agree with the buzz out there and believe that she is up for an Oscar nod, whether she might win or not is up for speculation.
All of the other actors play their parts well alongside Adams and the movie plays out quite well. Another note that was quite interesting in this movie was the music. Alan Menken has been a favorite of mine ever since his work on the Little Mermaid and he does not disappoint here with the few, albeit quite good, songs that are thrown in. One especially that takes place in Central Park brings Enchanted to life in a mere three minutes showing us the magic that Giselle has brought to reality and the contrast between her and Robert (Patrick Dempsey).
Enchanted is a well made movie that unfortunately suffers from an unnecessary CGI ending climax but never fails to entertain. The movie most likely would not have done as well if it weren’t for Amy Adams, who in my mind IS this movie. If it weren’t for those last scenes with the dragon and the rooftop then this movie would have been close to my favorite light-hearted movie of the year, however despite the ending it still finds a place on one of my favorite theater experiences this year. I give it a 4/5.

The book is excellent. It's one of the best vampire novels that I've ever read. Though the book did give rise to zombie movies (like it was one of Romero's inspirations), they act more like vampires in the book, even though vampirism is a disease. Like they can only be out at night and they're killed by a stake to the heart and they drink blood, etc, if I remember correctly.
I went and saw Enchanted last night and I have to say it was a little dissapointing, I was expecting something hilarious that I would laugh all the way through but it only got a couple of chuckles out of me.
Has anyone seen the Golden Compass movie yet? It's getting average ratings, apparently; I don't know if it's worth it or not.

I've seen it :) Wasn't too happy with it, not because it's not faithful to the book or anything (I wouldn't know because I had never read nor heard of the books before this) but based on the movie itself it just wasn't all that good. It had it's moments and wasn't horrible but I would not highly recommend it to a friend. Maybe I should write a review, I haven't written a review for a movie I didn't like in a while...
I'm watching it next week, it's not supposed to be that great but I owe it to the book to go watch it so :D
I saw knocked up this weekend, who else as seens it?

Here were the nominations for worst films.
Epic Movie
Alvin and the Chipmunks
Bratz
The Comebacks
Balls Of Fury

Captivity
Saw IV
Hostel Part II
The Number 23
Premonition
Norbit
Are We Done Yet
I know Who Killed Me
That's most of the list :)
Oh and I was going to put American Gangster on the list...but I forgot... :( It's number Eleven though :)
but...but...epic movie was funny:P
Oh, yeah. I recently saw epic movie somewhere. Should I watch it or not?

Ok, so I'm assuming yours is a list of "Best of All Time?" Eve :) Because you have several good ones up there but why did you put up Everybody Loves Raymond? That's a show not a movie...
And is that your worst list!!! You have The Lion King and Big Fish in your worst list :( Those are some of my favorite movies...LION KING!!! :(:(
(And in my opinion, no you shouldn't watch epic movie unless you likes movies like Date Movie and Scary Movie 1,2,3,4. (although the Scary Movies were a lot better than Epic/Date movie because I thought they were complete and utter garbage.)

Actually, you should watch Epic movie if you like rude humor:P Oh and I loved the scary movies
:D Thanks guys! I'll read the reviews for it and see if I should watch it! :)
My top 10 would have to be
10) American Gangster
9) Zodiac
8) Knocked Up
7) I Am Legend
6) Charlie Wilson's War
5) Breach
4) No Country For Old Men
3) Michael Moore's: Sicko
2) Superbad
1) Juno
with movies like
15) The Mist
14) The Bucket List
13) The Great Debaters
12) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
11) Verdict On Auschwitz
all deserving consideration. I know alot of people didn't like this movie but the first half of Grindhouse, Planet Terror. That movie was just awesome, I laughed and was scared and I just loved it personally.

I wanted to see Juno...it looked interesting. Instead I saw Enchanted and the chipmunk movie over the holiday and both were surprisingly rather good. I think they did a great job with the chipmunk movie because it paid homage to the classic cartoon show.
you owe it to yourself to see Juno it was really great. I'm one of the few people who appreciated Ellen Paige's performance in Hard Candy two years ago and she follows it up playing another great role in Juno.
Michael Cera was cast perfectly for this role as well. Even in Superbad, a straight comedy, he was awkward and down to earth and I think its the role he was meant to play because he plays it so well and he gives the audience such a likeable character.
I think it was really well done
I didn't see either enchanted or alvin and the chipmunks because they both seemed to childish for my liking ((yeah look who's talking I'm still a teenager)) but with not to many more movies out that I want to see I might go see one or both of them
I really want to see Juno, I think I will soon:)
It was great, like I said to Shaun I loved it. Everything worked so well, they took a decent to above average cast ((although Ellen Paige has done some good work in the past she is often overlooked because of her inexperienced, and I beleive Michael Cera was misjudged after Superbad. Bateman and Gardner played their parts excellently, but thats what you would expect out of seasoned actors playing supporting roles, but quite possibly the most inspiration roles were Juno's father and stepmother. I'm not sure who they are but they played extremely well)).
Being written as more of a comedy than a drama they found a really good balance, surprsingly heavy on comedy yet still maintaining a powerful level of seriousness throughout. I thought it depicted the mind of an angsty teenage girl with real problems quite well.
I just love how they did everything, I think I might be playing it up just a little to much for your own good, and with a deep but weak crop of top movies this year, in past years this might not be #1. Its still a great movie and if you get a chance to see it I highly recomend it =]

Ok It's that Time of the year (The end of the year :)) and I will be opening up two new threads here in the Common Room with Polls :) On the first one I shall place several of the Years best movies (Critically not Commercially) and I'll allow everyone to vote to see which Movie wins Best of the Year. :)
The second thread (Or set of threads actually, it will be the major film categories only) will be the Golden Globe Nominees and we will see who the site believes will win. :) Hopefully everyone votes and we can see the opinion of everyone. :)

Just saw "Vantage Point" earlier today.
A lot of people are going to hate this movie, but a lot of people are going to love it.
I am one of the latter.
It was great, see it and pick your side.
Love or hate.
GeorgeMichael
03-02-2008, 04:41 PM
ooh I've picked my side already Zombie :)
Hate it... (at least if we can only pick from those two, because I sure as hell didn't love it)
I mean really after about the third time of "that thing" happening I got sick of it. it was a nice attempt but it just didn't work out too much. And then of course Denni Quaid, the invincible man. He gets squished between this huge truck thing and between a solid wall. His car gets destroyed and then, Bum Bum Bum BUUUUM, he emerges without a single injury or drop of blood anywhere on him. He saves the presidents, and says those very stupid lines, and still he looks as if he's about to enter some fancy place since his clothes are perfect, no blood, hell his hair's even the same as how it started.
Has anybody here seen Across the Universe?
What do you think of it?
I saw it yesterday and it is officially on my favorite movies list.:D

I have never before gotten a feeling of tears in my eyes that just wouldn’t come out after watching a movie. Never has a movie done something so extravagant that it shook me down to my very core. This, my friends, is what Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did to me. It made me nearly cry for what they did to one of my favorite franchises… instead of reviewing this film, because I don’t think I could ever bring myself to fail an Indy movie, not even ToD, I think I am going to instead make a nice little blog list. Yes, a blog list of everything that I found wrong in Indiana Jones IV, everything I didn’t like, and everything that was stupid. This may take a while actually.
1.
The Opening Scene: The car chase led to nowhere, what the hell Spielberg… no, you know what, I blame Lucas… I blame George Lucas… yeah, your great original story maker Shaun gave us one incredibly boring scene that started to build up tension and deliver us NOTHING!!! I was expecting gunfire or something, maybe a crash, but no, they just turn and drive off… thanks for that… and look… GOPHERS!
2.
Gophers: What the hell Lucas? What… what purpose do the Gophers serve? Why did there need to be gophers??????? Couldn’t you at least have made them real and not CGI?
3. Indiana Jones: In Raiders of the Lost Ark Indy wanted to find the Ark, it seemed, more than anything in the world, so we were really into it. In Temple of Doom Indy wanted to save the children and help the village, somewhat, but he had a push factor. In The Last Crusade he wanted to find his father, and then the Holy Grail of all things. In Crystal Skull he doesn’t give a shit. We went along with Indy all those times because he wanted those other things dearly, but in this new movie he doesn’t really care, he says he used to care about the crystal skull, he never shows any indication of want towards the skull at all, not even towards finding Oxley or some woman named Mary. Indiana Jones didn’t care… we didn’t care.
4. FBI: What happened there? They interrogated him in one scene, I thought they were going to go into a whole sub plot about the red scare and how they thought Indy might be a communist or something, but no, I never heard from those FBI guys again… well that was pointless…
5. Mac: Ok… let’s start off simple, it was stupid to have Mac turn on Indy at the beginning. The point of a betrayal is that we get to know the character first and then we are shocked that this person has turned. Mac just suddenly says hi to the audience and then pretty much just points the gun at Indy… wow… I really really care. Really, I do. Bad writing there guys. Going on, why the hell does Indy keep letting Mac tag along? You don’t come back from that, Indy’s never been stupid before. At least not when concerning men… What’s up with that? I also question Mac’s ability to survive that full on collision of the jeeps in the warehouse… I mean, it’s not like he’s Indy or anything… which brings me to the infamous…
6. Fridge: Wow… just wow… so many things wrong with this scene, if the entire neighborhood was just a model to be blown up… why was there actual cable on TV? That made no sense. But then they have to have Indy shooting through the air miles away in a fridge and emerge completely unharmed… MILES IN A FRIDGE!!! No damage at all, he just stands up, wipes himself clean, and he’s off… There’s a limit to the suspension of disbelief Lucas, this is not Star Wars.
7. The whole conversation in the Diner: Can you say boring? What happened in this scene? Indy and Mutt talked… and talked… and talked… that was all, there was nothing interesting to hold the conversation together like when Indy explained the Well of Souls in the first movie with his chalkboard, he had something to work with. Here we have two people talking… that’s all, one key rule for writing is to show and not tell, the screenwriter should definitely look it up.
8. Also on the same note, what is the point of hiding the fact that his mom is Marion Ravenwood? Why call her Mary? (I’m not talking to the characters but to the screenwriter) For months now we KNEW that Shia was Indy’s son, and that Marion would be the mother. We already knew that, we saw it coming, and there was no point in hiding it. But to go further than that, the revelation that Mutt’s mother was Marion and that she had been kidnapped would have gotten us more interested because that would give Indy the motivation that he needed and that I was praying for. That would have made me care because Indy would care about finding Marion.
9. He grabs the idol, the walls start closing, the spikes start shooting out, the giant rock comes roaring after him. He grabs the Sankara stones, he crosses the bridge, the bridge is snapped he desperately tries to stay on. He grabs the grail, possible death of old age, the floors start splitting. All of those were such tense scenes and incredibly effective, along with dangerous. Now compare them with the fourth one. Walks into room, tears open corpse covering, finds skull, leaves. Wow… yes, I’m really into the movie now, not only has Indy found the artifact no more than a half an hour into the movie, but he hardly did anything at all except get by a flying hamster man outside, which brings me to another point. Apparently the skull had been taken by Oxley and brought back… how did Oxley get past hamster man?
10. … I’m sorry, I don’t know her name… Cate Blanchett: She was easily the worst villain in the whole series, and it didn’t have to be that way. She had potential to be one of the best, I mean she IS Cate Blanchett and all, but her character was just so poorly developed. Tell me if you can answer these questions. Was she really psychic? Why couldn’t she read the skull? Why a sword? Exactly… no answers, we never find out if she can read minds or if she’s just pulling everyone’s leg… Nothing happens with her character and it seems that they only gave us a sword (and that one line of dialogue about Mutt fencing) so they could throw in a lame sword fight in later on in the movie.
11. Marion Ravenwood… She’s smiling like the whole time, she never seems to really care that her son keeps getting almost killed, she drives off cliffs so sure that she’ll perfectly land on a tree, and that tree will support them, she’s just so UGH in this movie? What happened to the Marion we remembered and loved who ran away from trouble most of the times, who was always in danger but fought back occasionally, who was likeable… Again, no tension here.
12. The sandpit… it was all so they could have a lame discussion about Mutt and the fact that he is their son… oh and also so they could force in a lame snake joke… But one other question I had was this… Mutt ran for help and Indy knew this. Indy also knew that the only other people around were Russians who were ready to blow their heads off if they found them, so why in God’s name did Indy ask Oxley to go find help? Who did he expect him to find? Jesus?
13. Helping the Russians: They could have at least forced Indy to do all their bidding. For ninety percent of the film Indy willingly helps the Russians to get what they need. He goes out of his way to show them what to do and where they need to go, for no reason apparently. He has no motive for helping the Russians get what they want, hell he doesn’t even care about what the damn skull does. Again, this leads us to more boring storytelling.
14. Mutt: Why does Mutt care so much for Oxley? He cries when he thinks that Oxley might have lost his mind, but when he knows that his own mother is in serious danger and could even be dead he doesn’t bat an eye… wow Mutt. Also, I thought this movie was called Indiana Jones not Mutt and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull so why during every fight scene do we instantly leave Indy at the highest moment to see Mutt sword fighting, grabbing the skull, or swinging on vines with Monkeys? Mutt is a minor character, he should have been in the background like Short Stop in ToD, he fought too and they still focused on Indy. Why were they so intent on showing us Mutt all the time? It seemed that every time Indy began getting into his fight they just dragged us away, what a disappointment.
15. The Vine Swinging Scene: … … … I need say no more…
16. Roads appear in the middle of the forest: This one has been hit a lot of times before so I just won’t say anymore, but you should realize how incredibly stupid this is.
17. PG much Indy?: Where is the blood? I’m not a blood hungry Saw watching freak mind you, but come on guys, where is the blood? Raiders had faces melting and heads exploding, ToD had HEARTS PULLED OUT!!! This has nothing… not a drop of blood… I could pinch myself and I would see more blood than I would have in this movie… and it wouldn’t be CGI!
18. Oxley: I don’t like him… hell did I like any of the characters? He’s like ninety, and he’s jumping everywhere, falling off waterfalls and coming out perfectly, and it’s just too unbelievable. Also I never found out what caused him to gain back his sanity… they could have told us just to clear things up.
19. Now that I’m talking about characters let me say that there are too many. Indy, Marion, Mutt, Mac, Oxley… I can’t care about these many, it’s not the Breakfast Club. Cut out Oxley and especially Mac and this could have been better, much like Spiderman 3 last summer.
20. Shia getting ready to put on Indy’s hat… if it ever happens I will shoot George Lucas… I’d probably be given an award.
21. This is how you can tell a movie wasn’t that great: John Williams did not give a good score… he pretty much just reused what he had from the other three movies.
22. It wasn’t funny!!! I hardly laughed at all, I can’t believe that they could do this to me…
Ok enough calling the movie out on it’s faults… I will now mention the good stuff. (By the way, I left out the Ants and a bunch of other failures just for the sake of not beating on a dead horse)
Good Things
1. It’s an Indiana Jones Movie ad Steven Spielberg directed it.
That is all, overall I recommend Crystal Skull for that one reason above but let me say that I never thought this movie would sink down to where it would fight ToD for the worst in the series.
I wasn't a fan of the movie, either. Way too much suspension of disbelief. I read one review that noted, in the first 15 minutes, Indy survives being captured, shot at in the warehouse, a rocket chair, A-bomb detonation, etc. I cringed when he was running at the top of the boxes with not a single bullet hitting him.
And when the kid was hanging in the vines, I thought, "I swear, if he starts swinging on them..." and then he catches up to a car chase by swinging on vines?? Right before the chase, there was a tree demolition machine clearing a road, and during the chase, they pass it, and suddenly there are two roads.
Way too much for me. Can't they honestly do better nowadays? This is the same sort of stuff that killed the third Pirates movie. A guy who keeps switching sides to the point where you don't care anymore, and a substitution of believable plot in favor of nonstop mindless action.

I could rant forever on the new Indy movie.
It was all George Lucas.
There was interview where Spielberg was excitingly describing all the stunts he was going to do and Lucas was like, "Uh, Steve, you know we're gonna need CGI for that, right?"
Just WTF. Let Lucas go over in his little space world and play with his little laser toys. Spielberg does the realistic stuff.
Mac betraying Indy was just UGH. SOOOOOO cliche. And you know how I am about cliches, I even wrote an entire thread about it. Just...the dialogue was SOOO predictable that it was just embarrassing.
"I thought we were friends, Mac."
Just...UGH.
And the vines?! WTF? Kid thinks he's Tarzan now?
And the fridge...
Oh man.
This movie definitely "nuked the fridge."
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nuke+the+fridge
Supposedly, the fridge part was supposed to:
"The fridge scene was meant to be a parody of all the old warnings about nuclear attack (i.e. duck and cover, hide in a fridge, etc.). It was not meant to be taken seriously."
But what's a parody doing in an Indy movie?!?!
Hahahahaha! Urban dictionary hits the nail on the head! :D
survives a nuclear detonation by climbing into a kitchen fridge, which is then blown hundreds of feet through the sky whilst the town disintegrates. He then emerges from the fridge with no apparent injury. Later in the movie, the audience is expected to fear for his safety in a normal fistfight.

Sliding away from Indy now, I want everyone to know that I'm conducting this project of sorts. I've been inspired to put together a montage of all the films I think everyone should watch, and I'll post the links to the youtube post here. But take note, this might take a while. I'll update as soon as I can.
