How do you guys motivate yourselves to actually start writing. That's the hardest part for me. Getting started

Imelda motivates me.

Imagine what it'll be like once it's published, and I become a household name. :D And look at all the poor-quality books being published - if they can succeed without trying, then someone who actually makes an honest effort definitely can.

I don't get motivated, it just sort of happens when it does and the rest of the time I'm cursing myself for not writing.

Andy Kay has a household ring to it.

If I don't have Imelda ... I remind myself that if I am at all interested in making a living as a writer, I have to write. The alternative to being motivated is being locked in a desk job.

I usually don't. I just sit down--try to ignore YWO--and start either looking at my document of ideas, or read the last thing I wrote. I have to remind myself that if I want to finish, I need to do some writing :P

It really helps if you disconnect from the Internet/turn off Wireless, etc.

For instance, I was just editing, but as soon as I got a tenth of an excuse and half of a second, I came on YWO, browsed around, and responded to this thread.

Yeah. When my internet was broken (got hit by lightning, stupid thing), I got so much writing done, it was great.

So yea, I bet that was helpful :P

Just think- your book, lined up on the bookshelves at Barnes and Noble. The kids at school would come up with copies, saying 'Oooh, ___, I loved your book! I didn't know you write!' Soon, you're getting interviews, asked for autographs, and they're even gonna make a movie!!!! WHOA!!!!

OR

Sometimes, when you haven't read your work in a bit, you begin to think it's not as good as you thought. You think, why the heck did I make him drive all that way to go to the beach on a first date? totally unrealistic, or it's never going to get published. it's a complete rip-off of lost!!!
Those negative thoughts can make you want to go back to your work and fix those 'errors', and before you know, you've written another chapter. :)

Hope I helped!!

Ah, yes. Sometimes I pause at the bookstore by the fantasy shelf, and I finger the gap that my last name will fill.

I'm not really sure about interviews, though. I just know I'm going to pick my nose on the Oprah show, or something awful like that. Or they'll unearth all my dire secrets (ex: I really do write erotica) and I shall be expelled from the national stage in disgrace.

Or they could find the post where I admit I write erotica and mass e-mail it.

Yes. This post.

What happens for me is a click of the lightbulb... I have an idea for the next scene in my script I write it down... It just happens...
Yes, I am weird.

Ahaha, wow.
That's an impressive post.

I don't really get motivated, unless I have an urge to finish a story. If I get bored, that's pretty much it but if it's a good story, then there's a good chance I'll complete it...But I'm really slow, cause usually I'm just to exhausted to write.

I just think: "If you don't plublish a novel or write a sucessful script, you're screwed." Works every time. But, obviously, that isn't for everyone. Just picture your book inside your head saying: "#1 Bestseller" above the title. Imagine how many fans you'll have (who'll probably create a few forums dedicated to your work), the money you'll get and the satisfaction that you're famous.

I'm usually bored beyond compare when I start writing. Then if I really like where I'm going with whatever I am writing, I'll keep going until I feel satisfied with it, or until someone drags me away.
It tends to get a lot more difficult to continue writing at that point.

I like to imagine reviews.

The one that pops through my head right now for Jordan's story is, "A real teenage hero, ready to kick Edward Cullen's ass," mostly because I hate Twilight and would love for Jordan's novel to be way better and more well recieved.

I do this all the time. Don't get me started on my rockstar interviews with Oprah, >.<

The more I try to motivate myself, the more I fail.

Motivation to write (be it lyrics or fiction) usually comes to me when I'm not even thinking about it -- and usually at the most inconveniant times, such as when I'm sleeping or when I'm at work.

It's only when an idea creeps into my head uninvited that I get awfully excited about it and rush home to get to work.

Sadly, most of the time the idea goes uncompleted...

Motivation.

I got nothin. I usually just start writing from a dream I recently had or how I feel, which explains my lack of completing a story. My stories are a spur of the moment thing usually reflecting on what I just said in the previous sentence.

I'd rather not get into my dreams about being on Oprah... usually involves me tripping and falling on top of some guy. Heh. Well yeah that's pretty much it. I'm not such a big help when it comes to motivation I usually end up making people feel worse. (sighs)

usually when I drink 3 mugs of coffee, or 30, and have nothing to do on the next day, and its 3am, there's nothing to do, every online game I play is under maintenance, my dog ate the cable tv's remote, nobody worthy of my attention is online on msn, perhaps my internet connection itself is under maintenance, I borrowed my ps2 to my neighbour, his mother calls me lots of names when I phone him to ask for it back, I forgot where my crysis CD is, I have already re-read every book in my personal library that week, my dog bites me when I try to wake him up and play, nobody is arguing in the streets so I can listen in...THEN, and ONLY THEN, do I open up a blank word page and consider...
then I look behind me and see my bed.

I suck. I hope my failure motivates you.

I love to write. People tell me I write well. Of course I have a wish to publish in the future and the fantasy that people will actually like my story. But even if I knew no one else was ever going to read or like my story, I would still write. Because I read them.
