View Full Version : Madeline L'Engle's conception of time travel?

I dunno where this should go, so I'm posting it here.
Don't you find it wicked how she describes it? Since I'm writing a time-travel story, I find it fascinating. Does anyone else agree with me?

How does she describe it?
. . . Sorry, I have no idea who she is or what she wrote, but I am interested as I am also writing a story with a little time-travel in it.

Well, it depends on what part you're talking about. Since there supposedly is such thing as a tesseract, [google it if you don't know; I can't describe it,] they tesser through a few dimensions and such.
When they're going through the 3rd and 4th dimension, it's as if their bodies have dissolved and only their thoughts exist. However, when they go through the 2nd dimension, the humans [aka Meg, Calvin, and Charles,] are suddenly aware of their lungs being compressed and have no air.
That's the best I can do at explaining it though. xD

So, what would happen if you go back in time and kill your grandfather?
Gandalf the White
08-18-2008, 06:58 PM
I would cease to exist on this planet! But I would save him for last. Kill all the other grandfathers in the world and problem solved. Most of the population would be dead as a fly at a house party. FLY SWATTER! -SMACK-
Rafael Domination
08-18-2008, 07:02 PM
But, if you didn't exist, then no one would have travelled back to kill him. :D
Gandalf the White
08-18-2008, 07:10 PM
No no, you missed understood. If I could travel back in time... I would kill everyone else's grand father and save mine for last! At least I got something out of it. Afterwards I would cease to exist.
Rafael Domination
08-18-2008, 07:16 PM
No, I get it, but what I was saying is that when you did kill you grandpa, you wouldn't have existed, and then that meant you never grew up and went back to kill him, which would mean that he lived, but if he lived, then you were born, and you did go back to kill him, which means that he did die, and since he did die, you never existed to go back to kill him, which meant that he did live, and...
That's called a time paradox. I've read about it on Wikipedia. :D
You know what I think would happen? The Fabric of Reality would rip.
Gandalf the White
08-18-2008, 07:31 PM
It would. I have read many things about time travel. Like, if you even drop a piece of gum or kill a butterfly, that messes up the entire history. Time travel is all hypothetical. Although, I have seen a couple interviews with scientists in them expressing their ideas. Hmm have you ever seen "what the bleep"? Its all about quantum psychics. It's amazing how they describe it. In the movie, they say, we actually feel things and do things ten seconds after they are actually done. It's just that our reality is pulled over our eyes, only further blocking us from the truth. Basically we see what we want to see...
Rafael Domination
08-18-2008, 07:33 PM
HAha! I know.
I have a theory, though. Since you've travelled back in time, you're theoretically not a part of your natural timeline anymore. That meant that you'd still exist, but the you as in the one who grew up, would not have existed. My opinion is that you'd still live, but when you travel back to the future, no one would recognize you.
Confusing, ain't it?
Gandalf the White
08-18-2008, 08:03 PM
Indeed. I agree with you though. As you travel back in time, people view you differently so therefore your history would change and you would no longer exist as the person you were before. Only different. But what gets me is that once you do go back into the past or the future and your original character stuck in the present changes... how would you go to the actual time that it is? Your own self would already be there. Thats what gets me. I mean I could see if you returned back to the exact time you left before but your character has changed and time sped up while you were gone in the past. Mind boggling. O_o

08-18-2008, 09:44 PM
If you tesser, though, then you only get back to where you last were in your time about five minutes after you left. -nods-
And yush, it is confusing.

That's probably why it's best not to make a time machine.
Gandalf the White
08-18-2008, 10:27 PM
Well we will eventually all form into super intelligent monkeys, no doubt and fend for global domination. So no worries.

08-18-2008, 10:29 PM
Of course! xD
However, Madeline L'Engle didn't really describe how Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who, and Mrs Which actually tessered... did she? I forget; I haven't read the book since 5th grade and I'm going into 8th. -dies-
Gandalf the White

Well considering I never read the book, I know a lot about it already. I love these subjects. Time and such.

No sarcasm; I really need to know.

Dude, I know quite a lot about the subjects. But what would help you more is if I actually showed you. Go to youtube and watch "what the bleep"
All of it is about quantum physics. About the space time continuum. Breaks in the fabric of time. Its amazing. All I know basically that we see what we want to see. The world is actually pulled over our eyes. Things happen 10 before we actually feel them or see them. Weird enough?

I'll need it...

Nice story. Going back in time, eh? I like the idea. Interesting topic by the way. I need to write something like that, with the acquired knowledge I have.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
You're a PIRATE?
Gandalf the White
08-21-2008, 12:16 AM
Nope! I am a jedi! I already have a few on my side! Majyk and...Shadow I think. SO BAM. You are going down. Ninja girl.
seikoXchan
08-21-2008, 12:19 AM
Oh, no. Is this one of those Star Wars things?
Gandalf the White
08-21-2008, 12:32 AM
Maybe :P Maybe you are going down! I mean seriously. Ninja vs. Pirate vs. Jedi.
Seriously in all seriousness who do you think would win?
seikoXchan
08-21-2008, 12:36 AM
Ninjas. That's why I chose them over drunk pirates and spitting llamas...
Gandalf the White
08-21-2008, 12:39 AM
I suppose. But the time of ninjas are over. The time of the jedis has begun.

08-21-2008, 12:52 AM
Sure, sure.
Are we gonna start this battle or what?
-cough- We're spamming...
I just got an idea.
We can start a whole new game off of this.
The ninja-pirate-llama-jedi war.
Or something like that.
Message me; we can't keep spamming here or Zomb will get us. xD
