Actually, I think it's more of the fact that the story, in itself, is a self-insertion, like many fanfictions or original stories on quizilla. The fact that it's so popular is most likely because the readers have either not read such stories on the internet before, or they were already fans of them.

Honestly though, the more I looked into what the characters did and said, the more I disliked the story as a whole.

But it's whatever floats your boat, I guess. ^_^

Yes, which isn't stating that all people who read it are drooling over him. If you took away all the Cullen-obsessors, you'd be left with a small group of people who enjoy the novel and don't fall in love with fictional characters. If I meant all of the readers obsessed over him, I'd say: "And yeah, Twlight is becoming popular, due to all of it's readers being teenage emo and gothic girls wanting to drool over this Edward Cullen guy.
