Have you ever shown your writing to your parents?

I show them some stuff, but mostly not.

Mine goes from All the Time! to Nope, so I picked Sometimes. Basically, they could read it when it was public, but now everything is in Members-Only (they don't know yet), and they're not going to go to the trouble of becoming members so they can read my stuff.

Not because they don't like my work, but because ... I don't think they like becoming members. It bothers them.

I picked sometimes because I can't show them the suicidal stories. They'd think something was wrong with me. :P

My parents are, well.... You would need to meet them. So, I chose nope.

Yup. I don't show them my self-indulging erotica stories.

... kidding!

I love my parents but sometimes I don't like to show them my stuff but others I show, it depends on my mood and their mood that day and the piece of work.

Oh yeah?

Wanna bet?

Wait ... if this were true, I wouldn't want to prove it. xP

My mother is my unofficial editor, she reads through them and gives me tips. I don't like to show them everything, they get pissed at me when the characters start cussing.

I showed my sister my novel, and she was the first person to read it through. Then my mom got interested, and she edits it for me now. But only with my novel. I didn't want her to read my short story, but she kept asking, and so I finally let her, but told her not to talk to me about it because it's a bit... strange for her. :p

I told my mom that I was writing a novel, and that it was sci-fi, and then she told EVERYONE SHE KNEW about it, and I was like "WTF mom, why would you do that? I don't even know if I'm gonna finish it yet!!!!"

It was so embarrasing because my aunt said, "Oh, I heard your writing a book. Is it about superheroes?"

It is. But she made it seem totally dorky. And that's what my mom told everyone, that I was writing a superhero book. My family pisses me off so much, I don't bother to show them anything.

I'm getting mad at her again right now, reading ths over. MOM YOU BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm better.

My dad keeps asking about my stories... and my I have cussing in it... and I'm not allowed to cuss AT ALL and it has some err like sexual harrassment in it so I have to tell him only the good parts... But he keeps asking and it's getting on my nerves... I NEVER show my parents anything, well I used to but I never do now. To many questions:glare:

I can't remember that anyone in my family or other connections would ever have read any of my texts. That might be because I never showed them to anyone. And that again is because no one asked me for any. Conclusion: no one was ever interested in my work (You won't find it here, because it's in German. Maybe I'll translate that stuff).

blue phoenix

It's in German *teehee*, no hurt feelingd I just never thought about it.

Without knowing what you exactly mean (yes, I'm confused now): of course it is in German. Because I'm German - okay, I write some stuff in English sometimes. But after once reading it again, I stop liking it and send it directly to the bin. And showing my grandparents (I have lived in my grandparents' house for umpteen years) English work wouldn't be sensible because they don't understand any English.
Uh, now I'm some interested: what do you mean with what you posted? This might be a silly question, but I don't quite understand it - not referring to the language, that I understand. I mean, content-related.

I have shown them once or twice. Most the time, I don't because we like different kinds of books. But if I show them to one of the two, it would always be my mom. ^^;

Huh. My dad keeps asking, but he's very strictly Christian, and can't deal if I'm writing about any sort of romantic stuff at ALL... even as a subplot. A very minor subplot. That's why I keep passwords on my computer settings... My Student ID number is the only gift the state has ever given me... Nearly impossible to guess. Works well. Mom... well. Mom's just not the type to be all supportive and Is-there-anything-at-all-I-can-do-to-help?
So... NOPE. NEVER. That's how often I show my parents my writing. If they ask, I give them a basic outline-ish thing that is "edited" especially for them... but usually, they only ask how I'm doing, so I give them how many pages I have.

I was at a hair-cut appointment yesterday. The lady who does it, her name is Cindy. She's been doing my mom's hair forever, so they talk.

Cindy: "So, how's your novel coming along?"
Me: "Oh, it's um...I'm getting there, still writing...um..."
Cindy: "Oh, still in the development stage, uh?"
Me: "Uh...yeah...I'm getting there...Who told you? Did I tell you?"
Cindy: "No, your mom told me years back."

Great. My mom's been babbling about that 500-page piece of junk I wrote in Middle School. She's probably told her about the rewrite of that piece of junk I'm currently working on, too.

I don't e-mail my story, but I have sent them some essays I did. They liked it.

When I was younger I wrote a lot of horror stories, I showed my Dad once but he has dyslexia and wasn't able to read it so much, my mom just thought something was wrong with me. Thinking back.. most people did. Hmph, well, I'll show them!

My parents can't concentrate on books long enough to read real stuff, let alone my works-in-progress (There is no way I'm related to them). Not to mention, they're still trying to "cure" me of my fantasy obsession, so showing them my all-fantasy collection of stories would probably not be a good idea.

That being said, I kind of wish I could get my parents interested enough to read my stories. That doesn't seem very likely at this point, though.

If I showed them my work, they'd say: "You're going the wrong way, you should just be a businessman." Not 'cos it's bad writing, even though it is anyway, but they like dumbing down creativity. My dad's the typical businessman who loves his money and my mum's the typical fashion-loving bitch. And no, that isn't teenage angst talking, it's true. You'd know if you lived with them. Why do you think I've been kicked out of my house? Heh. Anyway, I think you should be able to guess from this it's: "Nope".

I do when I need help with something, if it's for school but otherwise no not really I dont even think Dad knows I write that much.

I've never liked anything enough t show my mom, plus she wouldn't like it much. Not because of my writing but we have different tastes in book. Mine varies from from fantasy to romance to angst. Hers is... whatever I force her to read by pestering her for months. Apartently I'm turning into a teenager, complete with the occasional angst, so I must have severe depression. If, heaven forbid, I show my mom something not completely bubblegum she'll tell my therapist (court thing, not because I want to). And I'll be on Zoloft. Yay. Don't think my mom understands the characters are talking, not me :).

Nope. Not even essays for school. I feel like it's my special thing,my own world,my own characters. My stuff.

Not serious stuff.
My English teacher praised some coursework I did and my parents asked me to show it to them >_<

I can't show them the suicidal stories. They'd think something was wrong with me. :P

Oh, I know what you mean. I know my parents too well to show them anything negative because, yeah, they'd think I'm depressed or something =p

I don't show them all the rubbish I write but I discuss some of my plots with them. My parents never comment on it. They listen to what I say supportingly. But they discourage me from geting too much involved into writing. I don't blame them; in India you can not have your bread and butter without education. You have to top if you have to survive.

jordanisonfire
11-09-2008, 11:24 AM
I still don't show them my writing, but they're now aware that I want to be a writer and, surprisingly, have no objections. They just insist that I take something besides writing in university, so I have something to fall back on if writing fails for me, which I intended to do anyway.

I sometimes show my parents my stories, rarely any of my longer works. My mom likes my stories as well as my poems. I really only show my dad my some of my scripts. He doesn't really have the same taste I do in Literature, so naturally my writing isn't really anything he likes...

My parents are kind of ambivalent to the idea of me writing. Unless I manage to get myself published, to which their response is, "Oh hey, that would look good for colleges."

I'd rather show my English teacher my work than my parents. He's taught authors when they were teenagers, so he'd probably be able to give me some good advice. He'd maybe even be able to edit it.

I ever show my parents my work. Not like that stops my mom from going though my stuff till she finds my notebook, AND THEN SHE WILL START MAKING CHECKING MY SPELLING!!! Ive told her that the stories i write i write thinking no one will ever read them, THEN SHE GO'S AND GETS ME ON TO THIS WED SITE!!!

Since I haven't shown my parents anything since the sixth grade, they're completely oblivious to my writing. They figure my hours on the computer are an act of teen rebellion, ha! Step-parents don't care, but, since I've got a whopping one chapter finished, there really isn't anything to show. :P So I never, EVER, show my parents ANYTHING.

I don't, because my mother ends up reading it out loud to herself while she reads and then she comments on every little detail. It's annoying. Plus, I don't know how she's react to some of my stuff and I don't really want to find out.

I used to show all my writing to my mom but not so much anymore. I'm a little frustrated as far as my writing is concerned at the moment. I've never really shown my dad my stuff, don't really think he's interested. I think I answered this poll a long time ago and forgot to post.

Well... my parents don't read fantasy, or pretty much anything else I write. I only show them the occasional short-story that I think works for every age. And even then, they say it's awesome even though it sucks. Kind of what most my friends do, so I just don't show them much. Praises suck when you know you don't deserve them. ;)

Your parent s too!Man!It's like all parents have the same brains...My parents keep asking me the same question over and over again...And I don't know about you,but my answer would always(or most of the time)be:

Depends on what it is. If it's a poem (which I never really write anymore unless I'm forced) or an essay, then yes. If it's a story, long or short, then no. They're just not the kind of people you show fantasy to. :P

We have this thing called Assignment Folders in school where we take home examples of our work. Whenever I take home a piece of writing my parents ooh and aah over it, because, and I'm not trying to boast, this is just a fact of life: I'm a good writer.

I've tried showing one of my stories to my sister, but she said she couldn't understand all the "big words". Which, by her definition, are words like "abominable" and "tempestuously". She may be the "perfect sister" (i.e, nice to everyone) but I'm the "smart sister" :D

I'm very touchy about family members and my writing. The only person who I am related to who knows I like to write and am currently working on writing a novel is my sister, and she also likes to write, so..
But my parents will never see my work. Ever.

I've shown my mom a few things, but it's been a year or two. I tend to have a problem with "showing off" something unfinished or unedited, or something that I don't feel too happy with. I guess it's kind of odd since she's really good at editing things.
