For the sake of starting a debate, I figure we can have a fun one.

So, do you like milk or soy? Why? Do you detest one or the other? Etc. Discuss!

I can't drink milk :'(. So I have to drink soy. But I LOVE both of them just cause I grew up on both. Only problem if I drink milk I get a really bad stomach ache. Hopefully I'll grow out of it, again. But yea.

Aww, that sucks!
I'm lactose intolerant too! But I still eat cheese and milk. I can't stand soy, to be honest. Soy cheese is evil!
But I get lots of stomach issues too cause of milk products :(.

I'm not vegan, I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian, though, but I think soy is a good idea. I'd rather drink that rather than common or free range milk, even though I don't really like the stuff.

Why, in a lot of cases the milking of cows is actually good for the cow. They get sick if they don't get milked. While I don't like the huge milking factories and such, since the cows can sometimes be abused and over milked, there are plenty of facilities that keep the cows and milk them and it generally helps the cow out. Sure, they're not running around like in the wild, but at least they're not dying or suffering from the lack of a calf!

I'm not against organic milk, of course. I drink organic. I eat organic, too. I can't stand common or free range stuff, though.

I LOVE MILK.

I don't quite understand why, but I love the taste, the aftertaste, the color, the way it goes down your throat -- everything. If milk couldn't destroy my singing voice, or wreak havoc with my stomach during soccer, I could probably get through two gallons a day.

Then again--the milk has to be cold, bought from the supermarket, and not rotten dead.

Soy milk, on the other hand--for some strange reason, I expect it to be like milk. It isn't. One drop can make me gag.

Oh I can too, I just can't have milk straight. I can have anything with it in it, Ice cream and all and don't have any trouble. Its really weird. Oh well. There are some types of Soy I CAN'T stand. Then there are others like Vitamilk that I love. It just depends.

Well I love milk and never gave much for Soy, but then when we moved to Japan and I went to a Japanese School (that's a real long story) they only served Soy milk and I have to say it's an acquired taste indeed but after a while I actually liked it better, right now I cannot just drink normal milk by itself, I need something along with it, but I can have soy milk alone, plus it's healthier!

May I ask why the Japanese only drink soy?

I think it is made out of rice. So it is cheeper to buy, and it is just all around healthier. That would be what I would think it is. But Hyper you have the same problem I do. :'(, but yea soy is better, but I still miss milk.

Does soy still have calcium in it, though?

GeorgeMichael

Yeah it still has calcium in it, at least I'm pretty sure it does, and I never thought about why it was the only drink we just didn't have another option. If you brought your own lunch from home they would get it and throw it away, I'm not kidding. It hurt me the first day when they threw my grapes into the trash can :(

Soy is made from soya beans. Rice milk is made from rice. East Asians drink soya milk because many of them are lactose intolerant, so milk make their tummies hurt. :p

I like both, but I can only drink a couple of glasses of soya milk before I get sick of the taste and forget about it for a few months. I adore milk, but it has to be either from a glass bottle, or filtered, because otherwise it tastes sickly and icky. And it has to be cold.

By the way, soy is not really healthier than milk. That's a lie. It lacks some of the nutrients provided by milk, and adds additional content that you don't need. It's a myth that soy is all good for you and stuff. Soy is like any other product--it's good for you in moderation.
Another reason why they don't drink cow milk is that there isn't really anywhere for them to even keep cows in Japan. It would cost too much to important large quantities of milk. It's just easier to stick with something that you've been doing for thousands of years anyway.

SOY IS THE MILK OF THE INFIDEL!

Oh wait, that's salad dressing.

Believe it or not I am indifferent on this crucially controversial issue.

Hah: here's a fun fact.

Humans are the only creatures that drink milk NOT from their own mothers

Humans are also the only creatures who even DRINK milk after chilhood!

:D

Personally, I prefer a milkshake of soy and cow milk- the perfect fusion of fluid from animal and plant!

It's soo much better than camel milk (believe me. I've lived in Dubai for 10 years. I've tried the stuff....)

I believe you. But that doesn't mean you're safe from my gun.

NO ONE IS SAFE!!! BWAHAHAHAHAA!!! Unless you kill me, actually. Hopefully I'd bring someone down with me, you know? I think I'm being off-topic.

I admit, I only like a very specific kind of milk. And I'm not interested in horizon-expanding.

Actually milk makes your teeth more yellow. It makes the enamel so well that it's almost transparent, which means you can see through it to the dentine (?) beneath ... which is yellow. :(

Shaun

You have to drink a lot of milk for that don't you?

Imelda
11-06-2007, 08:17 PM
Not that much. One pint a day did it for me ...

Shaun

A pint is a pint! Pfft. American heathens.

It's half a litre, if that means anything more to you.

Shaun

We don't need pints. We just need cups :P

Imelda

Cups are THE most RIDICULOUS measures ever! I mean, a cup of butter? Yeah, THAT'S easy to measure! Not. Pfft. I'll have to teach you to cook the proper way. :P

Shaun

I can't cook anyway. That's why I have to get married...if I lived on my own I'd starve...or I'd just have canned food...

Don't get me started on that again. *Grumble grumble*

I am totally spamming.

Soy milk can, I believe, be used in a form of low-fat cake. Or perhaps it was buttermilk ...
